heee hee heeee!!! Haleth is such a b..... well, you get it. She's a smart cookie, that's for sure! And now Inglor's upset... good grief! LOL What a pair these two make. And what I really like about it is that Inglor has no concept of how he upsets Haleth, so when she gets the chance to bug him... she knows EXACTLY what she's doing! She's SO bad!
Keep it comin' Haleth! (author AND character!) LOL
OH, and she traded the magic elf juice?? why does that worry me so?
Author's reply
Daynawayna, you're brilliant. I hadn't considered the effect of the T'Ang on the Lossoth before. The idea certainly has the potential to be the base of a short story. Thanks for the plot bunny!

This chapter was almost all visual for me. Too funny! I could see Haleth toiling and flailing her way through the snow with Inglor lightly treading above. The sound effects were good as well. Especially Haleth's raspberry as she zooms to her doom. Frankly,I'm glad Inglor is losing patience with her. But, something strange is happening, and it has me a bit worried. I'm not at all sure I should confess to this. ...I want to tell Inglor that I hear the bells, too. ~TF
Author's reply
Poor Inglor. He takes every comment in a completely literal way.
He would likely listen very carefully, then tell your ears that there still weren't any bells that far north.

All right already! When are they going to, you know, KISS EACH OTHER? Or is that something Inglor will also know nothing about??? Haleth seems like a charge-ahead female. Why doesn't she just tackle that gorgeous elf and be done with it?! She has far more restraint that do I.
This is SO FUNNY! Very witty piece. I'm having a blast so far, but can you do me a favor and tell me where you site is so that I can read the entire story. PLEASE??? This waiting for chapters when I know from the other reviewers that the completed tale is out there in cyberland is KILLING ME!
As to the betting, mine are on Haleth! Inglor, beware!

I'm glad you're enjoying the story.
Why doesn't Haleth simply put Inglor into a lip lock? She's a product of a very different, very old-fashioned culture. As far as she's concerned, women don't do things like that. They also don't wander around the wilderness but (to Haleth's mind) that's different.

Mmm,could you please tell me where the queue to trade places with Haleth is? I fear I did not grasp the last part, but it doesn't matter, the flow of uncertainty, grudges and plain exasperation is still very, VERY amusing. And yes, they're perfectly canonical to me! I wonder what's going to happen now with the palantir, shall they lose it, or fight for it or....get drunk and throw it away?
Author's reply
could you please tell me where the queue to trade places with Haleth is?
LOL! I'm sure there are times when Haleth would be more than happy to exchange places with you.
Sorry about the last part. It's written from Haleth's point of view and she has no clue about what it all means.

Ok... I'm a little confuzzled here...
I get that she's mad at him for 'losing her' in a bet, but he Won her back (along w/everything else), right? She's mad on principle (and because she's Haleth), and I get that too, but... ::smoke pours from her ears as brain gives up the battle to be functional:::
Ok... just what is he up to and what about the Palantir!?!?!? I'm so loving this, even if I get a bit lost! LOL
Author's reply
You've nailed the reason for Haleth's reaction. She's upset on principle. Inglor could have at least asked her before gambling away her freedom. It doesn't matter that he won her back. He just as easily could have lost.
I'm glad you're enjoying the story.

Anger was a potent fuel - yes, we have ALL been there where the male of whatever speicies is concerned ..sorry- that sounds VERY odd- you know what i mean. I am so enjoying reading this- Haleth is wonderful. So, where next? They obviously know about the palantir and have just retrieved it rather than stumbled across it- so what are they going to do with it? Although, at the moment, i am much more interested in whether Inglor feels the same for Haleth as she does for him. The 'mild anticiaption' - either this is the same Legolas Gimli baiting that goes on, or there is a fissance (sp?) of sexual desire... Is the crack in Inglor's facade beginning to show? Or is he just downright mischevious? I loved the way you had him with no shirt in the wager, and then threw himself on top of everything- and the Lossath's nervousness that he might actually WIN Haleth. Please write more soon!
Author's reply
Thank-you for the review. I'm very glad that you're enjoying the story.
The wonderful thing about Inglor is that he does things and reacts in ways that are totally incomprehensible. They'd probably mean something to another elf, but a human just can't decipher them. It makes him interesting in a maddening sort of way.
As for the Lossoth, I think he was a wise, wise man. I wouldn't want Haleth around for an extended period of time, either; especially if she didn't want to be here. She'd make life exceedingly miserable for everyone in the general area. Come to think of it, if I were male, I wouldn't want Inglor around. The women would always be following him around. Who could compete?

I don't think an apology is in order at all. It is quite funny, and I read it in the full light of day. I'm still laughing...and gratified that was what I thought it might be. I like your thinking...verrry twisted... ~TF

Oh I have just stumbled across this WONDERFUL fic! Haleth is fabulous and grumpy and so human, and Inglor is just so gloriously elvish. LOL! I'm with TithemFeredir on this. I wouldn't mind waking up in Inglor's arms -- oh no, not in the least... ;-D
This is my favorite line:
The list was not very long when Haleth was being reasonable, but she was in no mood to be reasonable.
Haleth really knows how to hold a grudge in style, doesn't she? ;-)

Poor Inglor. I don't think he could have anticipated Haleth's reaction to...well...anything, really.
Haleth is a bit older. She tries to see things from Inglor's perspective and is perfectly aware that she is being unreasonable. She still can't suppress or ignore her feelings.

You may have not intended it to be so, but be informed that I’m taking your characters for their namesakes (a blond, wonderful, scholarly, friend of mortals elf called Inglor, IS Inglor, Finarfin’s son to me, while a Xena-like woman called Haleth can’t be any other that Haleth herself) and enjoying it tenfold. ;-)

I see him as a "not so pretty elf".. don't ask me why... maybe it's his attitude and umm, verboseness. yeah. that must be it. ::Giggles::

You're right. She should go easy on him. She doesn't understand his culture and he doesn't understand hers. This leads to all kinds of misunderstandings as they continually miss each others signals.

I must say, as a southern girl or GRITS--Girl raised in the south, I would have fared no better than poor Haleth on skis. My backside ached in sympathy.
Inglor is a hoot! His innocence and bewilderment is charming to everyone but Haleth. Well, and his looks are appreciated too by the females of the Lossoth. He's like an alien that has been dropped off by the mother ship for a little anthropological study of the strange creatures know as human.
The relationship between the two is just great. You've captured the 'spirit' of these two with such vivid detail. They're both so easy to see, but the internal dialogue of Haleth is so dry and semi-disgusted with the whole set up that I can see her expressions.
So, Inglor is bowling. To win a palantir. And he's not certain what he'll wager. This should be good.
I'm looking forward to this tale continuing. It's just delightful.

Again with the sly humor! Haleth's grumpiness plays well against Inglor's seeminly innocent affect. The image of the children and women flocking around Inglor was, well, realistic in a dryly funny way, as was the ski tracks puntuated by body part prints. I have a feeling that the palantir bowling will go badly. Looking forward to the next. TF

I have a confession to make. The body prints in the snow was inspired by a personal experience, although it was snow shoes instead of skis.
It was funny to look at...afterwards.

I've read this story on your website, and am ecstatic you are sharing it here.
From the chapter:
**Two figures sat on a desolate, rocky beach. Cold, grey waves lapped upon the stony shore.
The first was tall and fair. His golden hair shone in the sun, his bearing was straight and proud, his clothing immaculate.
The second was completely obscured by a cloud of biting insects.**

Author's reply
It's a good question as many writers strongly identify with their characters. In this case, though, the answer is no. The name sharing is due to sheer laziness. I have a terrible time coming up with names and was too shiftless to think of another one.

Poor Odob - after all that work, the darn clam got away. He needs to think of it as a great 'one that got away' story to tell his grandchildren. I really could see this walrus banging and pounding on the palantir, too. I have been watching and reading about mantis shrimp's breaking open clams and anything else they like (in coral reef aquariums), but I think Odob would be even more amusing.
Author's reply
Thank-you, Nilmandra
I can picture an ancient and venerable walrus with only one, yellowed tusk, lying on a rock, basking in the sun while all of the little walrus pups gather around to hear his clam hunting stories.
I'm curious. How do mantis shrimp break things apart? I wouldn't have thought they'd be either big enough or strong enough to be capable of very much.

You have a way with words.
Better yet, the chapter is short, lending itself to reading without interruption. Interruption is the bane of my fanfic existence. But a common bane. An all-too-oft repeated bane. In other words, a main bane.
Glad the walrus was not affected by looking into the oyster or clam or bright as-yet-unnamed (except perhaps in the story title) thingie.
This could be interesting.
