Lianna · 3 April 2005 · Chapter 23: The Touch of Numenor

I've been lurking and reading, too, but I usually only comment on the work of a few authors whom I have been following for a long time. This is a good story. You have managed to bring some new perspectives to the very familiar territory of an Aragorn/Legolas friendship fic. I'll be continuing to read your story to see where you take it, and I'm sure that many others will, too. Don't let the small number of reviews discourage you.

Author's reply

Thank you for your kind words, Lianna. I appreciate your letting me know you are following the story - that's all I need. :-) And yes, I will continue to post the story here.

Unlurking to leave you a requested review. PLEASE keep writing. I'm really enjoying the story...I loved the twist on who was the target and am looking forward to reading the story as it progresses.

Legolass, Quite a lot of people read without leaving a review, even though writers tend to need the reassurances. It's a lovely story, indeed, but if you enjoy writing enough to be posting around, then you should continue, no matter the amount of review. It's your story. Besides, you made it pass Stories of Arda. They've decided you can post here, that you made the cut, so what with the inferiority complex? I know the number of reviews you get here are smaller than on the other site, but some people read on only here, simply because most fic here are good. The benefits of a closed site. I sincerely hope you are not withdrawing the story. I love it very much. I am not good at describing specific points that I love, but other reviewers do that. And please don't be offended if I immediately dissappeared again - I normally simply lurk. Sheera

Author's reply

Sheera, thank you very much for leaving this note. I don't feel any 'inferiority' over this story, really, and of course I enjoy writing it, but I just needed to know whether there were enough people following the story to warrant my continuing to post it here at SOA, or whether I should just keep it to the other site. This is a new experience because - unlike publishing whole stories in hard copy, where it's DONE and you can't do a thing about it if no one buys the book - writers here actually have a choice of continuing to develop the story or not, so for me, I simply needed to know whether I am posting for enough of an audience. Merely needed the one line to say: 'Hey, I didn;t hit this story by mistake - I'm actually reading it.' :-) No compliments needed because the fact you are actually following the story is validation enough for me. So - thank you for 'de-lurking' this once, I appreciate it. And yes, I will continue to post it here.

ArcherGal2932 · 2 April 2005 · Chapter 23: The Touch of Numenor

please please please please please please please please keep writing, this story is AWESOME. just as an FYI, some people just read and don't review (like me, until now), so don't think that just a few reviews is bad, because i think its wonderful!!!! i check for updates every day, waiting for the next chapter, and i love how you are able to make up an entire plot that is still loyal to what happens in LOTR (nobody has croaked off yet that is supposed to live, Legolas is lord over Ithilien like Tolkien says he is, Aragorn possesses great healing powers, etc. etc.) PLEASE, if you have any tips whatsoever in posting or stuff, TELL ME!!!! i've never posted a story before, but i've got some ideas that i'm putting into writing at the moment, so any tips, warnings, whatever would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!! ~ArcherGal2932

Author's reply

Thank you so much, ArcherGal, and I appreciate your letting me know you are following the story - that's all I need. :-) As for keeping to what Tolkien intended - remember this is my first fanfic, so you're getting suggestions from a newbie, lol, but for what it's worth: I suggest you develop your plot first, and decide what each character is going to do - then ask yourself if that is what Tolkien's characters would do. That takes care of the big picture, but this exercise has to go on throughout the writing. It just so happens that I can keep referring to things that happened before because that's what I intended - a link between the past and the present. But I think you can write a quite a good tale without that direct link as well. For me, the events may be different but the characters must stay consistent. Finally, though, I must say that although some fanfic stories are superb, none can be perfect, so - be like me - take a chance. And let it be a passionate effort, for that is what drives me. :-) Good luck, and I hope you will let me know when you finally post. And yes, I will continue to write and post mine. Thank you.

Ah! You are sooooo forbidden of withdrawing this story! Don't even think about that... As for the number of reviews, it's quite normal, don't worry about it. People are just a bit lazy to write... I should know, I'm one of them :D As for the story, you're doing great, so, no second thoughts now :)

Author's reply

Ophium, you have given me great support. And now that I know I have at least 14 or 15 readers following the story :-) - that's all I need to continue to post here; so, no second thoughts. Thank you for sticking with me.

TithenFeredir · 2 April 2005 · Chapter 23: The Touch of Numenor

I like it that you gave Aragorn a quiet interval to give in to his grief and fear for Legolas. It semmed a genuine moment. The awakening was also very nicely done, comparing the flood waters with the overwhelming effect of the poison on Legolas. I hope you continue the story. It's a good adventure with well-written action, your characterizations are vivid, even in the minor characters, and you have covered the emotions of the characters all along the way. You have created some very moving moments, in my humble opinion. All that together makes for a very addictive story. Please continue to post! ~TF

Author's reply

TF - thank you for the support you have given me. I appreciate it. Speaking of moving moments... have I said that these two have not even reconciled yet? Let the next chapter speak for itself. :-)

I've just found this story and I think it's brilliant. You write beautifully and your characters are wonderfully believable. Great work:)

Leaward · 28 March 2005 · Chapter 22: The King and the Healer

Another great chapter, Legolass. I like how you have Narum watching Aragorn treating the Adhunians and thinking of the difference between him and how Sarambaq treats his own people. (I'm going to bookmark that in the back of my mind as probably coming into play later on... ;) ) And when he thanks Aragorn, I love that Aragorn realizes that they too are pawns, something he will probably bear in mind as well in his future dealings. Looking forward to the next chapter ...

Author's reply

Thanks, Leaward. Keep that bookmark there - don't know if it will play out the way you envision though. ;-)

TithenFeredir · 28 March 2005 · Chapter 22: The King and the Healer

It's good to see appropriate triage in Aragorn's treatment of Legolas. It also looks like he is gaining potential allies by treating the other wounded men. I like the way he has to deal with is conflicting feelings about having to care for them when his real concern is for Legolas and a part of him wants revenge. I think it's very good the way you are maintaining Aragorn's level of distress over Legolas' condition as well. Looking forward to the next! ~TF

Author's reply

Aragorn certainly has to deal with lots of emotions and has to keep them on a tight leash. It's not going to let up yet! Thank you for your review.

Ophium · 22 March 2005 · Chapter 21: Affirmation

Your story distracts me *g*... in the best of ways! So much to do and yet, when I see a new chapter of this story, I can't help but to drop everything and dedicate myself to reading it. Great plot to bring Aragorn' skills closer to Legolas. Keep up the good work!

Author's reply

Thank you - and I shall do my best to keep distracting you!

Leaward · 22 March 2005 · Chapter 21: Affirmation

Very smart of Aragorn to approach Narum and the rest the way he did. And I loved the line: Let my choices now not be ill, Aragorn begged of the Valar. Guide my feet to the right path, for I could not bear to lose the friend who has remained steadfast at my side on every path onto which I have strayed. That is very much something Aragorn would say. Now I'm interested to see how he plans to get Legolas out of that mess. And wondering if Sarambaq might recognize Aragorn ...

Author's reply

"...wondering if Sarambaq might recognize Aragorn ..." Will he? Hmmm.... Glad you approve of Aragorn's strategy and his prayer - thank you.

TithenFeredir · 21 March 2005 · Chapter 21: Affirmation

Oh, that was excellent. I love the way you have Aragorn overcoming his desperate concern for Legolas in order to maneuver himself into a position to help. The way his anguish increases when he gets there is heartwrenching, and that last bit with the verbal lifeline...Wow. Can't wait for the next. TF

Author's reply

Thank you, TF. It amazes me that I often worry about how readers will react to a chapter and then find that someone likes it - so thank you! I am actually a little nervous about someone who's going to take me apart for canonical inaccuracies, names, etc. Dangerous business, writing fanfic...

Ophium · 17 March 2005 · Chapter 20: Breath of Life

Nice of you to not kill Legolas *g*. Another very good chapter, keep up the good work.

Author's reply

Thank you, Ophium. Hope others are as happy as we are that our favourite elf is alive.

Leaward · 16 March 2005 · Chapter 20: Breath of Life

A weak, warm, scented breeze rippled the air, almost imperceptibly, wafting to him and sighing around him. Gently, gently, it brushed his hair and whispered against his ears, feather-like and soft. How very elven! I like how Aragorn stays still and waits for that 'connection', giving Legolas a chance to respond rather than rushing into danger himself. And the reactions amongst the men was quite typical and realistic, especially Poras' attempts to brush off his own over-reactions. Well done, again!

Author's reply

I'm glad you sense the elven-ness in the connection; it's such an important element in this story. Amusing how you agreed with my decision to make Aragorn wait rather than rush on to the plain, while another reviewer - at another site - wanted to kick Aragorn into action lol! (The reviewer did quickly say that she understood the shcok the Ranger was in, though.) Thanks again for the review, Leaward.

Leaward · 16 March 2005 · Chapter 19: The Reality of a Nightmare

What was wrong was that – besides his breathing, the lazy flow of water, and the slight friction of the man’s clothing against the saddle as they moved – it was suddenly the only sound he could hear. It is so true that a 'lack of sound' can be scarier than anything else. Good build-up of tension, and I love how it reminds him of his forests and the initial dream of failure that he'd had. You're winding it all together very nicely.

Leaward · 16 March 2005 · Chapter 18: Bonds Unseen

Sorry it's taken me a while to get back, Legolass. (Cute nick, by the way) I'm glad to see the connection between the two, and that Legolas is leaving clues along the way. I just wish he'd listen to Aragorn's messages. I'm guessing he won't realize it in time ... off to read the next chapter now ...

Author's reply

Thank you re nickname - a friend coined it; I'm the Lego-lass, she said :-)
