Why is Legolas settling for "acceptable"? And this little twit won't make much of a Lady. I'm still with Bandy on this one. I liked Gimli's explanation for the divided opinions on Legolas's marriage!

Lackwit · 16 August 2004 · Chapter 18

Congratulations, Le Rouret, for showing that Elven males can be as foolish as human ones :) I am still laughing over Bandy's backhanded compliment to Legolas' mother! :)

Duchess · 16 August 2004 · Chapter 18

Oh dear, he really IS smitten and do I detect a secret love for him in Seimiel? Is THAT where the tragedy is going to come in? Will she fade? Please say no!? How long before he sees Laustaire is vain as a peacock, a spoiled brat and hasn't an ounce of common sense in her head? That's the distinct impression I'm getting. I still say if she can't bear to be around both Dwarves and Hobbits, she has GOT to go and BEFORE the wedding! Can Elves divorce? I can't recall a thing in canon that says they can. *whimper* Woman you're going to give me an ulcer with worrying over this story! *rueful grin*

Joana · 16 August 2004 · Chapter 18

"...you do not know how lovely she is, and how vivacious and animated..." That doesn't justify someone being in love with somebody else! There has to be more. Legolas should marry someone who he could have inteligent conversations with, someone interesting and intelectual. Not some foolish little girl who likes ribbons all over, dresses in pink and chases fluffy bunny rabbits under the candy rainbow! Erm... sorry. And don't get me wrong, I love this story.

Lamiel · 16 August 2004 · Chapter 18

H'm, now this border skirmish sounds interesting. May we hope that someone will hit Legolas upside the head with a lance, and hence knock some sense into him? Bandobras is right: he doesn't love the fluttering little twit. Thank the Valar for that. He's convinced himself that he has to stick by her, out of duty, but he's not happy. And he won't be happy. All this talk of help running the demense, and whatnot - it's all politics and duty, and not an iota of real happiness in the lot. Really, you've done a great job showing how unhappy Legolas is, all while he's trying so hard to convince himself that this is the right thing to do. That takes talent, to show what a character is really feeling while he himself claims the opposite. Nicely done.

Joana · 15 August 2004 · Chapter 17

Aleluia, someone with vision! I really hope Bandobras can get Legolas back to his senses! If he does get married, he should marry someone that likes him for all that he is and not just for his drop-dead elven looks. *waiting for next chapter anxiously*

Duchess · 15 August 2004 · Chapter 17

There ya go, Bandy, you tell him! THAT ought to help Legolas wake up from the spell everyone seems to be trying to cast on him. There really IS no hurry unless they all don't want him finding out what a little witch she may be before it's too late. What a cruel thing to do to someone as nice as Legolas if that's the case. How irritating that they are pushing him so! I really do hope Pearl lets Bandy go on ahead now and be with Legolas. The poor Elf NEEDS that young Hobbit around to verbally smack some common sense into certain people! Humph! LOVED this part, greedily wanting more as soon as your household allows. *vbg*

Lamiel · 15 August 2004 · Chapter 17

YES!!! Yes, you tell him, Bandobras! Yes! Oh, I'm so happy, I can hardly think straight. It's high time someone set Legolas straight, and Bandy did it exactly right. See, this is why I like your writing so much. I just love the whole style of Bandy's letters - even when he isn't saying everything I've been wanting to say to Legolas for so long, just the enthusiasm and directness of his language is so refreshing. Especially after all the high court brouhaha and whatnot - Lady this to Lady that with all respect and on and on... if I lived in the Middle Ages I think I'd rather not be nobility. Better to be a serf and slave until your teeth rot out than have to couch everything you said in all the style and high political double-speak of the upper classes. Especially when it leads to things like political marriages being forced on people, when, as Bandobras points out, they have eternity! There's NO NEED TO RUSH, PEOPLE! I do hope that Legolas listens to him. I'd also love to see a letter from Gimli - he's set the idiot Elf straight, indeed. And where is Aragorn in all of this? Surely he'd take an interest - Legolas is one of his closest friends, wholly apart from being an ally and neighboring lord. Oh, and I laughed out loud at the line about Legolas' mother being as old as dirt. Ha! Oh, that is fantastic.

Ms. Whatsit · 14 August 2004 · Chapter 17

Heh. Our little hobbit's a wise one, I see. He's absolutely on the mark about everything.

RogerGamgee · 14 August 2004 · Chapter 17

Oh my....this was absolutely hilarious! I cracked up when Bandobras talked about Legolas' mother being 'old as dirt and still the prettiest'. His desperation is becoming almost palpable in its intensity. I loved Sam's advice about waiting to see how they would get along before tying the knot...very sage advice from our favorite gardener! Loved this chapter...keep up the good work!

Lamiel · 13 August 2004 · Chapter 16

The little tramp. Grr. Oh, I bet she did look just bewitching, peering up through her eyelashes like that. Grumble. In fairness to the author, I will say that you've managed to paint a very clear image of what is happening here, and through the medium of letters, which is no easy task. Just because I don't like the picture, doesn't mean it isn't well drawn. But please, please, can we just shove her over a cliff or have her fall for someone else or whatever is going to happen, and have it happen SOON so we can get over it? Legolas needs Gimli back. Or even Bandobras. Someone needs to smack some sense into him, and fast. Oh, and a question: I believe that Elves were almost always engaged for one year before marriage. So when she says the wedding will be "next spring," what does that mean? Will it be a year? I think this is spring now in the story, but I'm not positive.

Ms. Whatsit · 13 August 2004 · Chapter 16

Is there a reason you never write from Laustairë's point of view, but always from Nardanë's? Is this because Laustairë is too much of a twit to provide intelligent commentary? I wonder. I also wonder how--or if--Legolas will get out of this mess.

Duchess · 13 August 2004 · Chapter 16

I don't like it. I don't like it ONE bit! WHY did everyone just assume that because Legolas is smitten with Laustaire's beauty and she his that THAT will be enough to sustain a marriage between them? You said this was not going to be a happy fic, so I'm now filled with foreboding over this whole relationship deal and am afraid of what will happen. The more I read in the letters of those that know the maid, the more I think she's a bit of a spoiled brat who will show temper at the first true obstacle. She had BETTER like Hobbits! *emphatic nod* Please give her that one redeeming quality? Or will that be the breaking point between her and Legolas? *getting antsy* More soon? Pretty please? I know I'm a greedy gus, but I can't help it where excellent fics are concerned. *vbg*

Elenora · 12 August 2004 · Chapter 15

Major tension! And I can see that it is driving everyone to distraction – not only Legolas, but your readers as well. This situation does tend to leave one on pins-and-needles…here we have our magnificent elven prince, who has had little time for contemplating the fairer sex, what with battling orcs, goblins, the hords of Sauron, and then attempting to establish a kingdom and get it to a point where it is thriving and a boon to it’s neighbors…and then being badgered, on top of all that, by parents and councilors alike to find a wife and wed. It really isn’t any wonder that he’s at last been “bedazzled” by a pretty face. I mean, considering what all he’s done, I think we can cut him a bit of slack and allow for some plain, ‘ole lust to overwhelm our fair elven prince. He has as much as admitted to Bandobras that he’s had virtually no time to really get to know this elven lass who’s caught his eye…and that’s where the true tension in all of this lies. We are all fairly certain that if he DID have the time to truly get to know this elf maid, he’d find her shallow, conceited, and definitely not to his liking….wouldn’t he??! Oh, Le Rouret, how you’ve gotten us all on the edge of our seats…will Legolas figure out that though fair of face and body, this elf maid simply is not “up to parr” with our noble elf prince – before his conniving councilors (and parents) have him leg-shackled to her?? And there’s the rub…will you stop this “doomed-from-the-start” union before it is solidified………..or will you allow it to be “consummated” and then tear it asunder later? For if you are to remain somewhat close to canon, it is Legolas and Gimli who later sail for Valinor…not Legolas, Gimli, and Legolas’s wife. Personally, I’ve always felt a sign of a very good writer is one who so captures her readers – that they are so drawn in by the story – that their emotions are strongly brought into play by the actions of said story. Ah, you must be a very good writer indeed!!! I’m looking forward to seeing how all this plays out. Elenora

Nynio, I feel a bit compelled to come to Le Rouret's defense in the matter of Legolas being out-of-character. In The Lord of the Rings he was little more than Aragorn's Sidekick #2, who popped up on the pages now and then with a couple of lines to remind the reader that he was still in existence. His character remained pretty neutral throughout the story. He was hardly developed aside from his friendship with Gimli and no history whatsoever is given for him other than that he was the son of the king of the Wood. His character was never truly developed, and so I think it's a tad unfair of you to classify Le Rouret's Legolas as out-of-character. If you feel that he has a strong and defined character, your perception of him has likely been altered by watching the movies or reading fanfiction in which Legolas is more developed. xx; On to my usual line-or-two review: agh, this wrenches me. Brilliant prose as usual. I can only hope he'll come to his senses and realize he's betrothed to an airhead. ...And I'm not sure whether your comment back to me was a joke or not, and so I'll just say that no, I haven't read it. ^^

Author's reply

Thanks for defending me! I suppose I ought to have put a warning on the story description that this was not canon -- more "fanon" than anything else. Heck, "Green Knight" wasn't really canon either -- more Tolkien meets Ivanhoe. And I agree about Book!Legolas being a little bit of a non-character, but good heavens he was more interesting than Jackson's Movie!Legolas -- poor fellow had no personality whatsoever. I at least try to keep LeRouret!Legolas somewhat close in personality to Tolkien's, being deprecating and amusing and dangerous, which is really all you could glean of him through the books. And naturally our perceptions of a minor fictional character written in stilted prose will vary from reader to reader -- I'm just a little surprised at how much I've irritated people with this fic. I had no idea my perception of him varied so greatly from everyone else's! Well, at least I'm not slashing him. It was your use of the phrase "bugger off" that made me think you'd read my other (extremely AU) fic "Pottymouth" -- Legolas says that quite a bit in that particular story. But I warned people it was AU, so no one really complained! Again, thanks for the review. I appreciate your positive comments! Le Rouret

Nynio · 12 August 2004 · Chapter 15

Oo you write so well, but your stories are another matter. The Legolas you portray is out of character. First he appears to be gay and now you picture him to be a shallow and hormone-driven adolescent. Whats worse?? But now I understand why you said it was a sad story. He marries her and then is going to be miserable for the rest of eternity when he tires of her in bed and discovers that she has more wind inside her futile head than the plains of Rohan. Sad really. Sad also that a story so good as "The Green Knight", that you wrote earlier, will end up in a bad story such as this. You have more talent than that.

Author's reply

Well, I appreciate that our perceptions of Legolas' character vary, but good heavens -- I'm not quite so AU as to marry him off, when Tolkien only said he took GIMLI over the Sea with him. If you've read TGK you know I'm not above killing off an OC when the mood stikes me! This is not canon, nor movie-verse. This is strictly my taking an extremely minor and underdeveloped tertiary character and playing around with him a bit. You think this is bad? Try reading my other fics! Nilmandra won't even publish them on Stories of Arda. I'm glad you liked TGK; this isn't a "sequel" per se, just a sideline. I'll get to the true sequel ("King Eomer and the Green Knight") some time next year. And I promise, no airheads! Le Rouret

Lamiel · 12 August 2004 · Chapter 15

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Oh, now I know why this is billed as an "unhappy" story. Legolas! Snap out of it! The little tramp isn't worth it! I cannot believe that any fleeting treaty that might be made moot in a few hundred years when Legolas sails to Valinor is worth binding himself to this, this preening peacock of a brat girl for eternity. I bet she ends up dumping him, if he doesn't come to his senses and ditch her first. And she'll cause all sorts of disruption to the treaties, and the alliances, all for her pride and self-centered ego. Or worse, she'll go through with it, and poor Legolas will be wed forever (and even more out of our reach than he is now). Grrr.

Morrigan · 12 August 2004 · Chapter 15

Now now... Unfortunately, you ruined your story!!!! Idiot elf indeed!! He sees only the exterior. And I did think you considered him more substancial than this. To fall in love with the airhead queen...

Ms. Whatsit · 12 August 2004 · Chapter 15

Oh, no! No, no, no! Legolas has to put his foot down, I think. Gimli's right. "Idiot Elf" indeed.

Duchess · 12 August 2004 · Chapter 15

Oh my goodness! They betrothed already? How silly of everyone to jump the gun like that and it's NOT fair to either Legolas or Laustaire. Sheesh! Thanks bunches for Legolas' point of view on that night. *g* I'm really hoping that Bandy's mother will let him come BEFORE the wedding, just in case it needs to be stopped. Please please please let him get there ahead of time!? *begging* Hasn't it been long enough? Come on! Never mind Pip's wedding to Diamond, Legolas actually NEEDS Bandy's presence ASAP!

Aislynn Crowdaugter · 11 August 2004 · Chapter 12

Hi! I've just read this chapter again and had to wonder at Cirdans argumentation: was there ever any notable strife between the house of Cirdan and Oropher in the past? I thought Oropher fell out with Gil-Galad, not Cirdan, in the last alliance, save if Cirdan was by default included in Orophers disagreement with te Noldorin king. And how would a marriage between Cirdans charge and Legolas unite Noldor and Sindar elves? Wasn't Cirdan Teleri, meaning Sindar, himself? Also, what greater merge of the Sindar and Noldor Elves can there be as both the House of Elrond (who after all is a child of Earendil, grandson of Turgon, and Elwing, granddaughter of Luthien, the child of Elu Thingol himself) one one side and Celeborns union with Galadriel on the other? Oh, well. After all, Cirdan just wants his little charge to get the best party currently avaiable in Middle Earth. Trying to use the friendship of Aragorn with Legolas to achieve this and to make usage of Aragorn in this is a nefarious and underhanded way, though. For shame, Cirdan! Aislynn

Ms. Whatsit · 11 August 2004 · Chapter 14

So Nardanë was next to Laustairë when Legolas became lovestruck, hmm? And everyone assumes he has it bad for Laustairë... I'm starting to think that my prediction re: Nardanë was right!

Lamiel · 11 August 2004 · Chapter 14

It is something to hear Eowyn talk about the unlikelihood of love at first sight, given how hard she fell for Aragorn when she didn't even know him. But this account of Legolas dancing with the twit is not reassuring. I hope he's just putting on a really good show. But even so, he ought not to be getting her hopes up like that. Run, Legolas! Run far, run fast!

Morrigan · 11 August 2004 · Chapter 14

WHAT!!??? So youre going to make him fall in love for that one??? Ohh pleaso NO! Dont do that. You portrayed her as such a futile, a petty person. Legolas deserves more than a windy minded adolescent, dont you think so??

Duchess · 11 August 2004 · Chapter 14

Wonderful! Loved seeing things from Eowyn's point of view, but now we must have Legolas' as well. Whatever will he say to Bandy now? And this maid had really better love Hobbits or the romance is doomed! Wonderful part, more please?
