Have no fear, the story continues.

lwarren · 7 June 2004 · Chapter 5: A Walk in the Woods

Let's hear it for errant elves! I am loving this little interlude in the forest-I guess they were all grateful to be out of the confines of all that stone and away from all those prying eyes - adoring or otherwise. Now what's this about swimming - would that be, perhaps, with tunics off? Hmmmmmm? One can only hope and imagine.... I thoroughly enjoyed Celeborn and Legolas going off to commune with the trees, and their conversation. Celeborn is a good "uncle" or whatever to the I've always loved the way the elves love the trees, and the way the trees love their elves. Celeborn's story about Thranduil and Oropher and Galadriel was very interesting, as well. Thranduil defending Galadriel? That's a new approach....I think I like it! :-) Great chapter. linda

Author's reply

Thanks, and I am guessing you will really enjoy the next chapter as well when we go and see what Haldir and co are doing.*wink*

lwarren · 7 June 2004 · Chapter 4: A Wedding Tale

Great chapter! A funny little side-story about Thranduil and his intended bride, with a suitable (or perhaps, unsuitable *snorts indelicately*) ending, Legolas is getting a song written about his heroic self, and it starts off with Celeborn and Haldir sparring with their tunics OFF! (*sigh* I just love the elves! ;-) and all the trouble they get into, may they never change!) Update soon...oh, and BTW, I loved that term "farspeak" you used to talk about Celeborn talking with Galadriel. linda

Author's reply

Thanks for the review. I see you are another of the elf fanciers out there, who appreciates the males of the species. *grin*

lwarren · 7 June 2004 · Chapter 3: The Hunt Is On

Ooooooohhhhh! A party! A skin of wine (or 2..or 3), a loaf of bread (or in this case, cheese and dried fruits) and just about every male elf in Minas Tirith! Sounds like fun! :-) But, poor Lindir! Bless his heart, so polite and helpful...of course, he'll be the only one not in trouble with Arwen later! I found the disagreement between Glorfindel and Erestor very interesting...Glorfindel always is so lighthearted, but he can still be offended by a friend. Liked the race, tho'...a good wager is always curative for the tender male ego! *vbg* So, a bunch of elves and a lot of the King's best wine....do update soon! linda

Author's reply

Thanks for your review, it sounds like you are enjoying the 'party atmosphere' so far.

LKK · 7 June 2004 · Chapter 6: The Games We Play

LOL I knew the twins would try and do something during this interlude. I'm impressed that they managed to carve a serviceable chess set in a few hours. And then to stain them with blackberry juice --- quite ingenious. Did your knowledge of blackberry juice stains come from personal experience?

Author's reply

Their expertise comes from long hours spent around the campfire with little else to do whilst away on their orc hunts. In my case it was mulberry juice. My Nan had a huge mulberry tree that my siblings and I used to climb whenever we visited. Overripe mulberries are delicious and very 'squishy' and make good little paint balls, if you get my drift. More than once we were 'reprimanded' for stained clothes and dyed hands!

LKK · 7 June 2004 · Chapter 5: A Walk in the Woods

I liked your version of why Oropher left Doriath, jenolas. Very original and inventive. I could definitely see Galadriel making that kind of threat to someone who angered her. Now, I'm heading off to the next chapter!

Author's reply

Galadriel is definitely not a lady to be messed with, I agree.

Karri · 6 June 2004 · Chapter 6: The Games We Play

Very entertaining! The interaction between Glorfindel and Erestor was just brilliant. :-)

Author's reply

In case you did not notice, they are two of my favourites!

Dot · 6 June 2004 · Chapter 6: The Games We Play

*sigh* I really am enjoying this story. I know I’ve said it before but I love the way you write the relationship between Glorfindel and Erestor. There’s such ease between them and their playfulness always makes me smile! A restless Glorfindel is obviously an annoying Glorfindel – I can’t stand people reading over my shoulder either! The thing is, though, it’s so sweet that he really only wants Erestor’s company that you really have to forgive him… What a lovely image of Erestor reading to him as he rests his head on his lap. It’s interesting that Elrohir has seen the two behaving so affectionately together before but Elladan hasn’t. It seems to unsettle him at first but I like that neither is unduly bothered or judgemental. As Elladan says, “Glorfindel and Erestor have been friends forever.” Maybe it’s just strange for them to see Erestor so relaxed and open. I wonder who wrote that book? Maybe Celeborn himself. My absolute favourite part of this chapter was when Erestor coughs and Glorfindel offers him some wine. It’s probably a strange thing to pick out but it’s just such a kind and genuine gesture and besides, I think you’re such a genius when it comes to adding little details that mightn’t seem important story-wise but actually go a long way to giving insights into characters:-) Those two sons of Elrond are born troublemakers! I’m so impressed at their little trick, though. I don’t know how you came up with it. I love the fact that accurate prediction of the victims’ behaviour was so integral to its success as well – and it worked perfectly! I admit, though, that I was kind of glad when Glorfindel and Erestor tried to make them feel bad – Galadriel would *not* be impressed if Glorfindel was going around with black fingers! And yay for Erestor besting the twins again! I could almost hear him and Glorfindel chuckling away together at the end. And maybe I might have chuckled right along with them;-)

Author's reply

Thank you for your compliment about my characterisation and for noticing the more subtle nuances I sometimes employ. I understand what I am trying to do, of course, but I often wonder if anyone else sees between the lines. It is definitely uncommon for Erestor to be so demonstrative towards Glorfindel in public, but I guess he is so relaxed at the moment that he has forgotten to be reserved. Undoubtedly a result of Glorfindel's free spirited nature, I suspect. Look for a little more trouble to come as a result of the blackberries.

Bodkin · 6 June 2004 · Chapter 6: The Games We Play

I do like the Glorfindel/Erestor relationship. They have such a good-natured affection for each other - and for the little monkeys of Elrondions. I liked Legolas / Celeborn too. In fact, all these elves seem to be thoroughly pleasant people. Which is good.

Author's reply

Yes, there are no unfriendly relationships amongst this group, and they are all of carefree disposition, expecially in the freedom of the forest.

daw the minstrel · 6 June 2004 · Chapter 6: The Games We Play

Games within games here! Apparently you have to get up mighty early in the morning to outfox Erestor.

Author's reply

Early morning with Erestor?... sounds good to me!

Jules2002@aol.com · 5 June 2004 · Chapter 5: A Walk in the Woods

Okay I guess I should have read this chapter before I reviewed the last one. Okay Galadriel is okay if she gets along with Thranduil. Have to admit, I love her taking care of the elf bothering her. Maybe he'll think twice next time. Never underetimate nad ellyth. I loved the Legolas/Celeborn bonding. Sweetie Legolas needs all his family. thanks for writing Jule

Author's reply

You are welcome, and thanks for taking the time to review.

Jules · 5 June 2004 · Chapter 4: A Wedding Tale

Great story. I have to admit in the wedding tale I was completely on Thranduil's side. I think he proved his love to Elisiel by letting Galadriel be there let alone plan the wedding. Alps please, Thranduil is a proud Sindar elf and Silvan leader. The idea of trying to dress his Nolder is insulting. Thanks for writng Jules

Author's reply

I think Thranduil was probably overreacting slightly, but he was not accustomed to having his attire selected for him, especially by Galadriel.

Karri · 5 June 2004 · Chapter 5: A Walk in the Woods

A great chapter! I enjoy all the history you are giving us in this story.

Author's reply

Thanks! It certainly presents the perfect opportunity for a few small 'flashbacks', and there are more yet to come.

daw the minstrel · 5 June 2004 · Chapter 5: A Walk in the Woods

I really enjoyed the story about Thranduil in Doriath. When Celeborn first started talking about it, I was as eager as Legolas to hear more. And the elf who tried to kiss her must have been a great fool. Galadriel is far more scary than Thranduil in my opinion.

Author's reply

I agree that Galadriel is far more scary than Thranduil, who is really a sweetheart of an elf as far as I am concerned. The other elf was certainly foolish, but the elder generation of Elves were not by any means perfect, nor renowned for their common sense in some cases.

Dot · 5 June 2004 · Chapter 5: A Walk in the Woods

Oh, lovely chapter. Those elves have no intention of going back, do they?! “Legolas, shall we see what these old trees recall of the years gone by?” I love seeing this side to Celeborn, and it’s wonderful that he recognises their love for the trees as something he and Legolas can share. I have to smile too when I see him being so affectionate with his grandsons:) It sounds like Elladan and Elrohir have been well-behaved for far too long and need to vent some mischief. It’s quite funny to see the way Glorfindel and Erestor read them so easily and just resign themselves to waiting for whatever will happen. I like that Celeborn asks Legolas to drop his title. Celeborn seems to not only respect the younger elf but I get the sense that he’s actually quite pleased to have an opportunity to spend some time with him, especially as he clearly feels an affection for Thranduil. That little story was fascinating. I was completely intrigued when I saw how painful Celeborn found even contemplating it. I can well imagine that everyone is enchanted by Galadriel’s beauty but for a race that is so respectful of the marriage bond, it must have been a complete shock for this elf to not only approach her but try to kiss her. Thranduil did exactly the right thing. Such a gentleman. Or whatever the elven equivalent is… I can see how the incident – and Thranduil’s reaction – could cause trouble among the more political of them. Oropher seems to have completely over-reacted, although I suspect that he was probably unhappy anyway and this was just the excuse he needed to make a decision that he probably already had thought of anyway. It’s just such a pity that he didn’t really treat Thranduil with the respect he deserved. Fair play to Thranduil for following duty and going with his father in the end. Crikey, how different things would have been if he hadn’t! “Nay, of course not! You misunderstand. She threatened to remove a certain body part.” LOL! Well done, Galadriel. I notice Celeborn seems rather proud of his wife’s ability to handle herself too! At least she doesn’t seem to mind that nearly all the male elves have disappeared. I love the way Celeborn gets all paternal with Legolas at the end – although that poor elf *really* doesn’t seem to like people teasing him about maidens. Great chapter. I really enjoyed seeing these two elves together. *wanders off to the fridge for some strawberries*

Author's reply

No, they do not want to go back, not unless they are forced to, it is so much more pleaseant in the forest. Elladan and Elrohir have yet to find their own amusement, but rest assured they will ( next chapter). Galadriel is not an elf to be messed with, as lovely and elegant as she appears outwardly, her inner strength has seen her through very difficult times. Celeborn is naturally proud of his wife, and he knows how well she can skillfully wield a sword when necessary! :) Strawberries, eh Dot? In the hopes of attracting a couple of young Peredhel, perhaps?

Dot · 2 June 2004 · Chapter 4: A Wedding Tale

Hee-hee, that’s quite a bunch of cowardly elves, there! Now jenolas, I’m afraid I have a major complaint. It is certainly good to know that Haldir was defeated in swordplay, but I really feel that Lord Celeborn deserved at the very least several more pages to describe him sparring on a hot day with, I believe you mentioned, no tunic on. Not because I have a thing for sweaty elf lords, mind you, just…y’know, out of respect for what was obviously a hard-fought victory… Anyway…! I love the way they all try to justify their reasons for having wandered from the city. Trees my hat. Actually, Erestor’s little insight was interesting. Obviously the people of Minas Tirith wouldn’t be used to the elves’ behaviour but I hadn’t thought about the fact that it would reflect on the new king and queen, who are both in a slightly precarious position as it is. I do love that even in your light-hearted stories you always make me think;-) That little tale about Thranduil’s wedding was just brilliant. I did feel a little sorry for Elisiel, but mostly I was cheering on Thranduil. I’m still laughing at him describing the robes as “far too elaborate, and something only a Noldo would wear”. I can just see him growing more stubborn by the second – probably not a good thing when dealing with Galadriel. “Thranduil threatened to lock all three ladies in his dungeon if that was the only way he could find some respite from their persistence.” LOL! Fantastic. It’s even funnier because Haldir and Glorfindel secretly agreed with him. I liked the piece about the “tranquillity of the mighty Greenwood”. Hard to imagine sometimes, eh? “And your parents resolved their differences with, what some less enlightened Elves might have considered to be a shockingly indiscreet display of affection for a betrothed couple. My Lady was not amused.” Did Haldir just call Galadriel ‘less enlightened’?!! I know, he meant she was just worried what others would think. Great image, though, even if I am more jealous of Elisiel now… They really did have a lovely afternoon, didn’t they? There’s nothing like some stolen food & wine, and a little sunshine. The ending was wonderful. I thought Celeborn summed up Legolas’ sacrifices perfectly. When put like that it’s easy to see that it was so much more than just being part of the Quest, which is what Men and Dwarves will remember of him. Legolas’ humility in the presence of elves such as Celeborn and Glorfindel was completely believable and I’m so glad that they see not just his achievements or even his sacrifices but his willingness and acceptance of sacrifice.

Author's reply

Dot, It seems to me that pages of elaboration on Celeborn's state of dress and success in battle would be redundant considering your imagination is obviously working overtime on the subject. Why am I not surprised! *smirk* I like to think that whilst all the members of the Fellowship as a group were probably showered with accolades, the Elves (and perhaps the Dwarves on Gimli's return to Erebor, and definitely the hobbits on their return to the Shire) recognised the individual role of ther young representative as well. There are many kinds of heroes after all. Thanks for your review, it is much appreciated as always, jenolas

LKK · 2 June 2004 · Chapter 4: A Wedding Tale

Please accept my sincerest apologies, jenolas. I have eagerly read each new chapter as you've published it. But I haven't had sufficient time to review. I'm sorry. I've loved this story. Giggled at the thought of elf males in bridal veils. Laughed at the image of Thranduil bellowing to his bride-to-be about dungeons. Felt sorry for Erestor when he felt shut out of the wedding preparations. This has been a wonderful story so far. I'm looking forward to more. :) LKK

Author's reply

Real life is a bother sometimes, is it not! No need to apologise. Like all authors, I like reviews, but more important to me is that readers enjoy the writing, whether they have time to comment or not. I am therefore very pleased to hear you are finding my tale amusing and are looking forward to the next chapter.

Bodkin · 2 June 2004 · Chapter 4: A Wedding Tale

Whilst the males are undeniably chicken in their determination to avoid the palaver of wedding arrangements, it could be considered that the ladies are being just a teensy-weensy touch unreasonable. Still - it gives them the opportunity for a bit of male bonding. Love the Thranduil story - I would like to see him have the nerve to put Galadriel in his dungeon! That could cause another round of kinslaying!

Author's reply

The ladies certainly appear a little unreasonable, but the story is not yet ended so who knows?

Jay of Lasgalen · 2 June 2004 · Chapter 4: A Wedding Tale

I love this tale - the thought of all those incredibly brave, fearless elves fleeing in panic from the mere thought of wedding preparations! I liked the tale of Thranduil, too - how fortunate for Legolas (and us) that they made up! Jay

Author's reply

Good to hear you like the story so far Jay. Thanks.

Elena Tiriel · 2 June 2004 · Chapter 4: A Wedding Tale

Why, yes, I do like male Elves, why do you ask? And half-naked male Elves are even better... Great chapter, Jenolas! The boys are behaving just like, um, boys... Loved the story about the almost-disaster at Thranduil's wedding! Men just don't get it, do they? Threatening to lock your bride and her mother in the dungeons just isn't a very romantic gesture... ;-D And I also like the wit of Glorfindel and Erestor... old friends who obviously like and respect each other enormously... Aaaah, sitting around chatting with friends, drinking wine, eating food, lying in the sun... I could learn to appreciate that lifestyle! Your Elves certainly know how to appreciate the finer things in life... Can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve for next chapter! - Barbara

Author's reply

Barbara, After reading you review of the previous chapter what other conclusion could be drawn. I should also point out that you are alone in your preferences, of course, but more of that is another story! Since they have managed to escape doing any work, I am sure they see no reason why they should not enjoy their freedom as they see fit. I hope you continue to enjoy the tale. jenolas

Karri · 1 June 2004 · Chapter 4: A Wedding Tale

Another terrifically entertaining chapter. :-) I enjoyed the story about Legolas's nana and ada very much.

Author's reply

Thanks, Karri.

Bodkin · 30 May 2004 · Chapter 3: The Hunt Is On

I just love the runaway elves. Typical males, dodging all the work of a wedding!

Author's reply

Yes, ask them to take care of a stray orc or two and there's no problem, but ask for a little help in the sewing room and they vanish!

Karri · 30 May 2004 · Chapter 3: The Hunt Is On

A very entertaining chapter1 This story could go in so many different direction that I don't dare speculate what might happen next and am looking forward to the next chapter.

Author's reply

Thanks for your interest, I hope you continue to enjoy the story.

Elena Tiriel · 30 May 2004 · Chapter 3: The Hunt Is On

Ah, mischievous Elves! Mischievous, gorgeous, male Elves! Mischievous, gorgeous, hunky male Elves playing hooky! Mischievous, gorgeous, hunky male Elves playing hooky and meeting up with even more mischievous, gorgeous, hunky male Elves to eat, drink, be merry, and get all sweaty while they spar and race each other! Rivers of flowing Elven testosterone! YESSSS! Great story! (Pardon me while I wipe the drool off my keyboard...) - Barbara ;-D

Author's reply

Am I to understand that you ... ahem... 'like' Elves, particularly of the male variety Barbara? *smirk*

Dot · 29 May 2004 · Chapter 3: The Hunt Is On

Oh no! Poor Lindir! For some reason, me shouting “Run, Lindir, run” just didn’t work… That’s some list of elves who have ‘disappeared’. If I were Arwen, I’d be getting a little paranoid. Where’s Celeborn? He’s not gone too, is he??! I wouldn’t be at all surprised either if that meeting between Elrond, Aragorn and Gandalf was taking place somewhere far outside the gates of the city…;) Elladan and Elrohir obviously find the idea of Glorfindel in a veil utterly amusing! But then, who wouldn’t? I like that Legolas reminds them of their need for weapons. I thought it served as a great way to bring us back to reality for a moment and as a reminder of the times in which they now live. Btw, Erestor in knee-length riding boots?? Yummy... Oh, I hadn’t realised that Glorfindel might be offended by Erestor’s words. I suppose that his reputation for mischief could lead people not to take him seriously and I can see how that would hurt. I’m glad Erestor let him now how much it meant to him to be taken on this little adventure. Even though it sounds like he’ll have to be the one to explain to Arwen! Ah, so they found Haldir & co. Not to mention the wine. I can’t even imagine where this will lead to! Bring on the next chapter!:)

Author's reply

As the author, I allowed myself a small indulgence..(Erestor is my eye candy).
