I finally got a chance to read the last 3 chapters, jenolas. I'm glad I waited until I had real time to devote myself to them. They deserved it. I like the ease with which you present each chapter. There's a feeling of confidence in them. Nothing's rushed or belabored. Very typical of your writing as a whole. I thoroughly enjoyed this story which has a very light elven merry-making feel without falling into the silly nature so many seem to think elves should possess. Good job! :)

Author's reply

"Elven-merrymaking" (with an adult approach to fun rather than childishness) is exactly the mood I was trying to convey and I can't tell you how good it is to hear that it was recognised as such. Thanks! Also thanks for your comments on my writing. I often find that as I start a story, it takes on a life of it's own, and I just let the characters do as they will, at whatever pace they want. It is great fun, especially when playing/working with elves. jenolas

Author's reply

Unfortunately this is the final chapter, but I am glad you liked the story enough to want more.

I think that you really are a gifted writer, the way you put my mind into almost being in the story, makes me smile. Especially the part of mischiefs the two brothers had done and backfired. Keep it up and hope to read more from you. Bedivere

Author's reply

Thanks, it is a lovely compliment to hear you almost felt as if you were part of the story as you read it.

Ah, jenolas. A perfect ending. I loved the opening paragraph - what a wonderful depiction of Minas Tirith preparing for the day's activities. And oh the excitement at the thought of seeing the elves! What a picture it must have made, the three stately elves riding through the streets. I don't know how many times your descriptions have made me wish that I was artistic enough to draw the scene but sadly I'm not... But then, I doubt even the best artist could compete with your amazing gift for creating startlingly vivid images. "When heads were bowed with respect as the elder Elves passed, they politely acknowledged in kind, the smiles in their bright eyes speaking to all of their warm and gentle hearts." Lovely! It made me smile that the three could hear the whispers of the crowd, and it offered an excuse too for Erestor and Celeborn to torment Glorfindel a little more! Ai, that smile of Glorfindel's must have ruined the chances of the men of Minas Tirith to win the ladies' hearts! I had a bit of a giggle at the total contrast in the reception they get at the palace. Elrond does seem slightly put-out by the fact that all the Elves disappeared and I'd say Glorfindel is right that Elrond may be wishing he'd joined in the fun. But then, his concern for Erestor is so genuine and deeply touching that I'm inclined to believe he was just worried about how he was faring. "Indeed he was, but how am I to accomplish all that still needs to be done if you insist on depriving me of assistants?” Well, I guess I can't really blame Arwen for feeling this way, I suppose. Actually, I'd probably be a little paranoid if I were her! Luckily, she's much more good-natured than I am and forgives easily;-) “I would be only too pleased to assist with your wedding, even in a small way." Poor Erestor. The break obviously did him some good but of course his feelings of being left-out would flood back again once he returned. I'm glad Arwen realises how he feels. It didn't dawn on me that she'd feel the same longing for things to be done as they would have been in Imladris. But it seems that she's hit upon the perfect task for him! What an incredible idea, to write a personal account of the wedding. It's clearly something that Erestor would love to do for her and not only will she and Aragorn cherish it, and indeed their descendents, but it just goes to show how much they love and respect Erestor to ask him to be responsible for something so intimate. You've brought this story full circle and it's so great to see Erestor happy and fulfilled again. Methinks you're fond of that elf! I had to laugh at the antics of Elladan and Elrohir as they rode through the city. Who knows, perhaps they'll even replace a certain golden-haired elf lord in the affections of the maidens! So Lindir isn't betrothed yet... But all the Elves will be *so* disappointed not to have another wedding to go to!! Beautiful closing image. No doubt Legolas will be mortified, but it's so fitting. I loved this story, jenolas and as always I eagerly look forward to more from you:-)

Author's reply

Me? Fond of the gorgeous ebony-haired, dark-haired scholar with a dry wit and a heart of gold? Whatever gave you that idea, Dot? I think that the maidens might see Elladan and Elrohir as slightly more'attainable' since their sister has chosen a mortal love. They probably have a better chance with these two than with the Elves, I agree. Thanks again for your insightful and witty reviews. I really enjoy them and appreciate that you take the time to write them.

lwarren · 17 June 2004 · Chapter 9: The Return of the Elves

*sniffle* What a lovely ending! Ai, a tribute to Legolas (he's certainly my hero, or couldn't you tell?) Well, a noble entrance for the three elder elves, befitting their position, and a rowdy entrance for the younger elves, why am I not surprised! The scene between Arwen and Erestor was so sweet and sad; she certainly knew how to heal his hurt feelings and make sure he knows his place in her heart. Just a satisfying, somewhat bittersweet ending to a great story! I thoroughly enjoyed catching up on the last chapters! linda

Author's reply

I am pleased you liked the ending and really appreciate your comments and feedback.

lwarren · 17 June 2004 · Chapter 9: Tall Tales and Truth

Well, after much hand-clasping (and kissing *snort, choke, gasp*), back-slapping, and elven male bonding (a beautiful sight :D), the contest has been called a draw! Had to laugh at the elders once again getting the best of the younglings; they didn't know what had happened...and Haldir and Legolas were priceless in their unbelief! :-) So, Arwen is not mad, Lindir is smitten, and another wedding looms in the future of our intrepid elven warriors! Can they stand the strain? Doubtful! LOL Neat story...I hate to see it end! linda

Author's reply

Well, they have to return to the city some time...although I imagine they are temtped to simply remain where they are..in tranquil safety :)

lwarren · 17 June 2004 · Chapter 8: Elder Elves

What a lovely description of the evening in your beginning paragraph! No wonder the elves wanted some time away from the city. After all the playing and fun of the afternoon, the fact of their short time remaining on ME is really never far from their minds, it seems. Especially the three elder elves here. I always thought of the elves leaving kind of like Sam does ..."It makes me sad..." (Actually, tears are not unknown when I read about it!) I never thought about when Erestor sailed, but it makes sense he would go with Elrond and Glorfindel (who definitely needs a leash, and a keeper! LOL) This was a sad little interlude, very effective and affecting, as you wrote it in the midst of all the merrymaking. I loved Celeborn's enthusiasm about helping Legolas with Ithilien...he is certainly a forester at heart! And I loved the way the trees were excited about the Firstborn returning to them...elves and trees...*sigh*...I never get tired of reading about the way they speak to and care for each other. Now, Mithrandir to the rescue (of all stained fingers)...It seems the party is really gearing up, now that the wizard has joined them ! :D Well done! linda

Author's reply

Yes, I feel the Elves are looking to their future with some sadness for the world they will be leaving behind. Mithrandir, never one to miss a good party!

lwarren · 17 June 2004 · Chapter 7: Wet Warriors

Allllllriiiiight! Frolicking elves and water and splashing and dunking Haldir - and fresh fish by a campfire surrounded by said elves!!!! *deeeeeep sigh* (of course I won't mention the absence of swimming apparel :D) *hyperventilates at the thought* Great chapter, jenolas, am really enjoying the fun! linda

Author's reply

Some things are best left to your (ahem...overactive) imagination. Glad you are joining in the fun.

lwarren · 17 June 2004 · Chapter 6: The Games We Play

Can I join G and E's reading club, do you think? *g* They have such a nice relationship - as you said, more like brothers. Now those twins, you'd think that over the centuries they would learn not to mess with the "big dogs", but I guess not! :D Isn't it amazing how the threat of their daernaneth's displeasure sobered those two up? Bad Erestor! LOL linda

Author's reply

Bad Erestor can read to me any time he likes! I guess the younger ones can simply not resist the challenge!

Bodkin · 16 June 2004 · Chapter 9: The Return of the Elves

Bet Legolas hated being the subject of a song. Love your description of the effect the elves have on the citizens of Minas Tirith - and their response, from cool dignity to the twins playing to the audience. And the slightly miffed but forgiving Elrond and Arwen.

Author's reply

I am sure Legolas was suitably embarrassed at least on the outside, but maybe inwardly pleased and proud.

nat · 16 June 2004 · Chapter 9: The Return of the Elves

aww! how cute! legolas gets a song all of his own...tee he he... i luv it!

Author's reply

Well, he is a hero after all!

It was fun, wasn't it?

Dot · 14 June 2004 · Chapter 9: Tall Tales and Truth

Very funny! It seems those twins are *never* going to learn that they won’t get the better of their elders. Still, it’s fun to watch them trying. I did feel a little sorry for Elladan and Elrohir, as they obviously took great delight in telling their tale and then found that no one believed them! And wow, Haldir really speaks his mind when he feels they’ve done something disrespectful! I can just imagine the glee of Celeborn, Erestor and Glorfindel when they overheard Haldir’s disbelief. I agree with Mithrandir that it’s a joy to see them acting so light-heartedly. I wouldn’t blame him for thinking they might be a bit tipsy! I don’t know how they didn’t laugh when they arrived back and everyone stared at their hands. Trust Glorfindel to seize the opportunity to cause some embarrassment. I had forgotten Elladan and Elrohir didn’t know that Celeborn had been affected too! He’s absolutely brilliant at putting them in their place without saying much. I have to say, though, their total respect for their grandfather really comes through at all times in this story. At least all’s well again and even Haldir seems impressed by the bravery of his lord’s grandsons. It’s so touching to see everyone’s concern for Elrond as well. I too am glad he’s not alone, even if he is missing all the fun here. I’m so happy for Lindir! And it sounds like Galadriel is already going to be involved with the matchmaking. That last line was hilarious – oh the horror of having to attend, or even worse to help in the preparations for, another wedding!! It looks like the little outing is coming to an end:( They don’t have to go back yet, do they?!

Bodkin · 14 June 2004 · Chapter 9: Tall Tales and Truth

It must be very odd to be three thousand years old and treated as naughty little elflings. (Of course, they behave rather like naughty little elflings.) Will they ever be allowed to grow up? It must be tempting to them to remain after all the elders leave purely so they can take responsibility for their own lives.

Bodkin · 13 June 2004 · Chapter 8: Elder Elves

Mithrandir to the rescue of dignity! I love this story - elves in their (semi) natural habitat having fun. As it should be.

Author's reply

It is fun to see the Elves enjoying themselves as one would expect. Thanks for your comments.

Dot · 12 June 2004 · Chapter 8: Elder Elves

And there they are! Yummm indeed. I loved this chapter with your Elder Elves. I must say, that opening paragraph was just beautiful. Such a lovely image of a soft summer night. It’s quite sad to think that while they gather to celebrate such a happy occasion, it also drives home the fact that their own days in Middle-earth are coming to an end. Glorfindel and Erestor seem to have accepted that they will leave soon and I see that Glorfindel in particular almost longs for it. It speaks volumes about how much these two love Elrond and want to offer him their support. But I thought you did a great job in showing that Celeborn is quite torn, or rather knows that he will stay but regrets the fact that it will mean separation from his wife and so many friends. Legolas’ words were so right. I’m glad the younger elf could offer some comfort to Celeborn. I do love your Celeborn (yes, even with his clothes on!) because you paint him as much more of a wood-elf than a lot of people do, which of course makes sense. I loved his delight at the thought of helping Legolas bring light back to the forests of Ithilien. It just dawned on me that these three would have known and loved Aragorn nearly all his life. And Arwen too, of course. How painful it must be for these elves to contemplate the future, no matter how happy the two lovebirds are now. And yet how lucky they are to have each other as such good friends. LOL! I nearly couldn’t bear to keep reading when Celeborn picked up the chess pieces! I’d be so annoyed if I were him! Ah well, he doesn’t seem to mind allowing Glorfindel and Erestor a little fun at his expense. He was probably just as afraid as the others were of returning to Minas Tirith and the excitable ladies with blackberry stained hands. And of course Mithrandir turns up at the right moment with Erestor’s amazing powder. Like the elves, I don’t think I’ll even question how he does that. So yet another person joins the group. Minas Tirith seems to be emptying of visitors fairly quickly. And it sounds like they took a fair amount of wine with them too if they still have some left over. Hmmn. I’d *love* to gatecrash…;)

Author's reply

Yes, Dot, there are certainly melancholy undertones for the Elves, despite the joy of a wedding between two of their most beloved. However, it is the elder three who feel the impending changes most keenly for they have seen many more changes then the younger Elves, particularly Glorfindel of course who has already experienced death. I am pleased you like my wood elf like portrayal of Celeborn who of course is also a great warrior and leader. In this relaxed situation he is in a very mellow mood, and willing to forgive his good friends for their little prank. (But what lies in store for the young perpetrators waiting by the stream?) And as for Mithrandir, well he is no fool and wisely prefers to spend the evening with a carefree group of Elves intent on fun and mischief rather than an evening among the wedding planners!

Elena Tiriel · 12 June 2004 · Chapter 8: Elder Elves

Oh, I love this! Glorfindel and Erestor are still the mischievous ones, aren't they? (Glor especially) And what a surprise! Mithrandir (which I just typed as 'Mirthandir'... Coincidence? I think not!) is never one to miss a party! Great story, Jenolas! - Barbara

Author's reply

I think Glorfindel is a firm believer in enjoying even eternal life to the full, and he delights in corrupting the normally dignified advisor into the bargain!

daw the minstrel · 12 June 2004 · Chapter 8: Elder Elves

It's interesting to speculate on why various elves sailed when they did. I always assumed that Glorfindel would go with Elrond, but I never thought about Erestor. I suppose Celeborn would stay for the twins and Arwen, and then they all would go when Arwen died. And that's about when Legolas went too. But what about Thranduil, I wonder?

Author's reply

I also wonder about Thranduil, but it is my opinion that just as Elladan and Elrohir sailed primarily to be reunited with their healed mother and Elrond, and with elven family ties being as strong as they are (except where the heart is concerned as in Arwen's case), Thranduil would not remain separate from Legolas ( or Legolas's mother if she is still in the picture somewhere) for long.

Karri · 12 June 2004 · Chapter 8: Elder Elves

A delightful chapter! Glorfindel and Erestor were once again a very entertaining duo. :-D

Author's reply

glad you liked it and thanks for saying so.

Dot · 12 June 2004 · Chapter 7: Wet Warriors

Ah, elves frolicking in water. Delightful. Who knew the Galadhrim were so lighthearted?! I love that they are so at ease with Haldir and even Celeborn and vice-versa. It shows a real camaraderie. The cheek of Elrohir to imitate his grandfather. It’s a good thing Celeborn was feeling forgiving that day. And what a loyal bunch of guards he has that they’ll even “capture” their lord’s grandsons. Legolas seems to have taken Celeborn’s words to heart and is calling him by his name, as well as seeming more relaxed around him. If I were Legolas, though, I’d have taken Celeborn’s remark as a challenge and promptly attacked Haldir & co.! He appears to be left out of the fun a little. Glorfindel and Erestor seem utterly engrossed in their game. It must have been a bit strange to suddenly realise that they’d been completely abandoned by everyone! I had to laugh at Erestor being so compassionate about Glorfindel’s “disfigurement”. I do love the teasing that goes on between the two of them. So Celeborn, Glorfindel and Erestor have wandered back to the glade? You *have* to have a chapter with those three together!:)

Author's reply

I guess Legolas is a little reluctant to join in since he does not know the others all that well, and especially when you consider he says he has never been to Lothlorien. As for having a chapter about the other three, I am working on it right now. Besides how can an elder elf fancier such as myself refuse to do anything else...hmmm ( or, more correctly, yummmm!!)

Karri · 11 June 2004 · Chapter 7: Wet Warriors

Very entertaining. :-) Oi! Nothing like mocking in elder only to discover they are listening. ;-)

Author's reply

Indeed, Elrohir should have been more careful. I am sure he will be next time!

daw the minstrel · 11 June 2004 · Chapter 7: Wet Warriors

I have to admit my first reaction was "Naked Elves! Yes!" But all in all, this lot had a good time on their little expedition to the woods, and I enjoyed the opportunity to see it.

Author's reply

Naked by implication, (or imagination certainly....*smile*), and having good, clean fun, as one would expect. I am pleased to give a little glimpse into the lighter side.

Bodkin · 11 June 2004 · Chapter 7: Wet Warriors

I just love the atmosphere of this story. Naughty wet elves having fun in the forest and playing in the water. It's great to have them all enjoying themselves without battle and torture and general agony. And they are just all so gorgeous.

Author's reply

I imagine Elves like to be carefree and light hearted as much as anyone else, especially now that most of the dangers they would normally have to be wary of have passed.
