An Unexpected Adventure [IN HIATUS]  by KathyG 332 Review(s)

And so the Fellowship, including three McClouds, trek on toward Caradhras...*shivers* Ouch, I can just imagine how hard it'll be to pull Joey through that mess, and the older kids can't walk on snow like Legolas either...

While Kaylee and Lucy stay safely back in the Last Homely House - a good place for them to be. :) I love that Arwen's giving Kaylee embroidery lessons!

Kaylee's prayer is so sweet. You know, I'm ashamed to admit it but I'd kind of fallen out of the habit of praying. I guess call it a crisis of faith - anyway This story has touched my heart and opened me back up to wanting to again. I'm sure it confused the Elves that we mortals are allowed to speak so directly to Eru. I'm looking forward to what comes next for both journeys!

Author Reply: Yeah, I'll bet it does confuse the Elves! And probably not just them, either. The McCloud children are blessed to be part of a Christian family; they're being taught in the way they should go. That is standing them in good stand now.

Yeah, Caradhras is going to be rough!

I'm sorry! I seem to have skipped reviewing this chapter, but that doesn't mean I don't like it! :( I really loved this chapter, especially the discussion about how Joey had to learn to do more things to help the Company once they set out. I wonder how young children of the Dunedain would learn such things - and whether that differed for Aragorn, as Estel?

"Be Prepared" is of course the Girl Scout (and Boy Scout, I believe) motto, but its inclusion here must be from The Lion King :D One of my favorite movies! Did you know that when Scar's voice actor was recording it, he lost his voice and a stand-in had to finish for him?

Author Reply: You didn't skip it; it wasn't here before. Until last night, it was part of Chapter 12. The contents of that chapter were supposed to be divided into 2 chapters, but they got combined. Last night, I decided to divide that chapter in two, and the result is this new chapter.

Author Reply: Oh, and no, I didn't know that! You learn something new every day. =)

Isaiah is one of my favorite books, and I was glad to see it referenced here. I empathize with poor Joey, but see he is doing better night by night. Now--for the abortive journey up Caradhras!

Author Reply: Yeah, really! And thankfully, Joey is stronger than he was when they started the journey.

I rejoice they got some joy for Yule. May they rejoice as they move into this new year--while they can.

Author Reply: "While they can" is right!

Yes, thought is well taken to make certain that Joey and Kevin both don't flag too early. And love the discussion of proper names for the newly rearranged meals.

Author Reply: Yeah, really! You may remember that in one of Dreamflower's other LOTR stories, the hobbits had a rather lively discussion about what to call their meals. =)

And I agree--Kevin and Joey both need to take care that they don't tire out too early in a marchM

I *love* "The Very Hungry Caterpillar!" It was one of my favorites to read, or have read to me, when I was little.

Wouldn't it be great if Bilbo could translate it with Kaylee's help into Westron or even Sindarin? *big grin*

I was re-reading "A Mother's Work" the other day and just about collapsed laughing from this alternate POV of Belladonna's chapter! Heh! Poor lads, even Kaylee had more sense than them! (You know, if Kaylee loses any teeth during this story, will Bilbo reward her with a farthing? Random thought. :) It sounded like foreshadowing!)

I just reread "Yule in Hollin" and I see where everything fits in. It's lovely to have inserted the McCloud children into the events, and I especially like how Kevin helped bring food to the table, so to speak. (Not that there's much of a table to speak of, in the Wilds...) Oh, and Joey with his monster mask...my goodness. Little boys indeed, LOL! It just figures. *snickers* I wonder if such masks are already a thing in Middle-earth, and if they are, who'd be most likely to have them...*giggles*

I love it! Well done KathyG and Dreamflower! <3

Kaylee

Author Reply: Hmm--a translation of that story into Westron or Sindarin. Not a bad idea! =)

Hmm. Dreamflower and I will have to decide whether Kaylee loses her teeth while she's Middle-earth, and whether she gets any money as a result.

Well, you know little boys! Fond of mischief. And Joey does have a mischievous streak, as became evident while he was in Rivendell.

Glad you liked it! Thanks.

A very interesting first day on the trail for all of them!

Author Reply: Isn't it, though? =)

"Westward Ho The Wagons" - finally, a Disney movie I *haven't* seen! Heh! :) I need to look that up - I wonder if Netflix has got it?

Aww, Joey's so adorable. I think it'll take a while for the McCloud kids to build up their strength enough to keep up, especially little Joey, but perhaps not as long as it might have if they didn't have a Wizard along. :) I loved the singing, and that they're allowed to have their "walking songs" for now even though they'll have to keep quiet later on.

I'm so glad Aragorn approves of Kevin! He'll be a fast learner, I'm sure.

This story is so exciting! *big grin*

Author Reply: Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying it. =)

Almost time to say farewell to Kaylee and Lucy then, and the rest of Imladris. Will we be finding out how Kaylee is doing back with the Elves, or will that have to wait until the end, I wonder? I'm particularly attached to little Kaylee Anne McCloud, you know :)

I loved this chapter a lot, especially Arwen teaching Jennifer how to use her knives, and all the presents. The cover for their Bible was especially wonderful! :) And Kaylee's surprise at having a present, too.

Author Reply: Not to worry; there will be Rivendell scenes featuring Kaylee interspersed with the Quest scenes. So you'll get to find out how little Kaylee's faring!

I'm glad you've enjoyed this chapter!

A satisfying last day, in its way. It will be hard to leave Kaylee behind, but she will have much to learn now that she dwells alone amongst the Elves and Bilbo.

Author Reply: She sure will! And that's a fact. Arwen and Bilbo, in particular, will have much to teach her.
