A Star in Midwinter  by Cairistiona 140 Review(s)

Oh, what an amusing read this was! Poor Denlad chasing those chickens down! You know, I remember having some chickens as a small child, and darned if they weren't fast little runners indeed.

Again, loved both of Aragorn's grandparents here, especially with their teasing description of Halbarad! Oh, that's wonderful . . . Denlad has much to learn, it seems. He's so very earnest and gullible right now . . . and oh, I laughed so at the encounter with Halbarad's son!

Author Reply: Thanks! "Earnest and gullible" is the perfect description of Denlad at the moment. I'm glad you laughed at little Halbaron... he's a bit of a corker, that kid!

I have never personally chased down a chicken, but I've seen others do it and it looks nearly impossible to me!

Thanks for the review!

I like nothing better than a lightheaded and close-to-fainting wounded Aragorn. No, I can think of few things I love more, few things. I am so glad---yes I should be ashamed of myself---that he got a wee bit injured.

Halbarad is a dear here, isn't he? All soft-hearted beneath that stern and glaring exterior. I love it his complete and utter devotion to being Aragorn's mother hen! And his wolf howl---nicely done.

The entire chapter was nicely done---no, more than that. Very thrilling!

Author Reply: Thanks, Lily! I had a sneaking suspicion you'd like this chapter. Can't imagine why... *g* And yes, Halbarad's nothing but mush under that crusty exterior. Glad you enjoyed this chapter!

Oh wow---I'm liking Denlad more and more. He's got potential, that boy. And I love your Dirhael, too---wise and yet mirthful. He's the perfect companion when Aragorn is not around to teach him about life as a warrior---though I do feel sorry that Denlad won't be getting his Mettare gift on time, it seems.

What an awesome last few paragraphs---very powerful.

Author Reply: Thank you, Lily! I knew Denlad had to have someone there for him when Aragorn wasn't, simply because so often Aragorn was called away from his people. Dirhael was the perfect one to step in as "Father of the Day", just as he steps in to play Chieftain-for-a-day (or year, or decade) when Aragorn's gone. I'm glad you like how I write him!

"Thank you," Aragorn said. "You’ve always been my favorite brother, Elladan."

Oh, how I love seeing the twins and Aragorn's interaction with them! And Ivorwen---I adore your Ivorwen! Swooped, lol! And I can completely and totally see her one day tending to a very ill Aragorn, and wouldn't that be sweet . . . but I digress ... I tend to think of everyone in terms of how well they'd care for him!

This is just a wonderful look at Dunedain life. And uh-oh . . . how harsh it can be that even Mettare is interrupted!

Author Reply: Thank you, Lily! I think Ivorwen would take very good care of Aragorn... and has had more experience at it than she really wants! And yeah, Aragorn and his brothers, what can you say... they're brothers! *g* Glad you enjoyed this.

Oh Denlad, oh Denlad... you are so cute in your befuddlement. And oh---love the conversation about the chickens! Here Denlad is, so in awe of Aragorn, and Aragorn is talking about raising chickens!

Ah, how lucky Denlad is to have someone like Aragorn watching out for him. But, I think he knows it well enough!

Author Reply: Thanks, Lily... I imagine it is more than a little disconcerting when your hero suddenly starts talking about very mundane things like chickens! LOL I'm glad you liked this first chapter. :)

A touching wrap-up to a timely and heart-warming story, with Aragorn as the Dunedain Santa Claus, and a happy Denlad coming with him. Thanx for this great holiday present, Cairistiona!

Author Reply: You're very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it and thank you so much for all the reviews!

Wonderful Aragorn/Halbarad dialogue - they put me in mind of Bing Crosby and Bob Hope in the classic "Road to" comedies, only they're Dunedain Rangers and so they're taller, grimmer, and more more deadly of course!

Author Reply: LOL... I've never actually watched those movies, so I can't claim any influence on my Halbarad and Aragorn, but I'm honored nonetheless to have my stuff compared to that sort of classic bantering. :) I imagine the Dunedain would be quite a bit taller, grimmer and deadlier than Bing and Bob. *g* Thanks for the review!

Denlad's joy at finding a place to not only live but belong comes to life here. The kid reminds me of Aragorn; minus the legendary ancestry and legitimacy and upbringing; they've both grown up as outsiders and come to belong to the Dunedain. I think Aragorn has felt the parallels too.

Anyway, a lovely chapter to end with.

Author Reply: Thanks, Raksha... that's a very good point that I hadn't consciously considered, that Aragorn would feel a connection with Denlad based on his "outsider" status. He would definitely know that feeling, if not to such an extreme extent as Denlad. I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter!

I rejoice I had time and energy to read this tonight, and wish you well as the new year comes in. Joy to you ever! And good to see the new Dunadan settled in!

Author Reply: I'm so glad you were able to find time to finish reading this in such a busy holiday season! Thank you for all the reviews, and have a wonderful New Year. :)

He will prove himself many times in the coming years. It is fitting that at the beginning of the new year of the Sun he should find a new life to live.

Author Reply: It is a nice time to make a fresh start, isn't it? Although just like the sun's returning doesn't immediately bring warmth, his life won't immediately be perfect, but far better that his now accepted into a supportive community that will become family to him. Thanks for the review!
