Inklings of Frodo's Youth  by Aunt Dora 53 Review(s)
shireboundReviewed Chapter: 5 on 12/28/2009
Those Sackville-Bagginses are just horrid. *shivers*

I enjoyed the tour of Bag End as much as the children!

Even when she is precisely that? Heh!

Ah, dear Lobelia! And love the forthrightness between Frodo and Sam's older brothers.

Bag End was spotless. It was also delightfully pre-warmed by fires, and fragrant with the scrumptious aroma of lunch coming from the kitchen.

What a lovely homecoming.

Now I am going to be really curious as to the long silence between Drogo and such a tireless letter-writer as Dora! Was there a falling-out when he went away? Or when he decided to marry a Brandybuck?

And I am looking forward to that party!

Interesting that this news took so long to reach Hobbiton. At least now Dora knows! But what a way to learn, and eight years after the event!

Oh my, Frodo's life is about to be full of new experiences! I hope Bilbo can find him something nice to wear to the party. :)

Ah, I myself tend to hate Maggot being shown as evil, but that's just me; nor do I suspect they had upstairs rooms in Hobbit inns any more than in Hobbit houses.

But love the care Gladiola gives him, and Bilbo reading this story in Sindarin to Frodo, and Frodo smiling over it!

Yes, delightful!

Author Reply: You are right, Larner. I need to put the inn's guest rooms down the passage instead of up the stairs! I'll fix that.

Author Reply: Oh, and I don't consider Maggot evil, he just lost his temper because Frodo was a repeat offender.

Oh, poor lad! I'm glad Bilbo is standing up for him, but I hope Frodo will be on the receiving end of more tender treatment and warm regard soon.

Author Reply: Tender treatment and warm regards (from almost everyone) are soon to come!

Oh, I like Hap and Gladiola! They are a sweet couple. Very nice.

Poor Bilbo does have a lot to learn about being a caretaker, but I'm guessing he'll be a quick study! And poor Frodo, with an infection from that beating from Old Maggot! It's interesting all the different takes I've seen in fanfic on Farmer Maggot's encounter with Frodo!

Author Reply: I'm delighted you liked Hap and Gladiola, Dreamflower. The Shire is full of sweet hobbits.

Very good portrayal of Bilbo. If you know about his other adventures with Gandalf, please tell us!

Rather than "straw tick krabattos," how about "straw tick pallet?” Or simply "pallet" or "straw tick."

Just to remind you in case you're not aware: both Rory and his sister Primula were first cousins of Bilbo's, their mothers having been daughters of the Old Took. So Primula was a closer relative of Bilbo’s than her husband Drogo, who was a second cousin.

If ten years passed before Bilbo knew his cousins had died, that would require more than simply Bilbo not visiting Buckland during that time. Primula had a slew of Took first cousins. Did the Brandybucks not notify them either? They were Bilbo’s first cousins as well, and probably would have said or written something to him.

And we’d have to assume also that the Brandybucks hadn’t notified Drogo’s siblings either. Dora, we know, kept up a regular correspondence with Bilbo, and surely would have mentioned her brother had died.

Speaking of Dora, I hope we will meet her in this fic.

Author Reply: All extremely good points, eiluj, and I will be addressing all of them in the course of the story. I'll do my best not to let the whole thing unravel before the long-expected party. The prologue and appendices of my copy of LOTR are pretty dog eared. Dora - and her reams of good advice - will be appearing shortly.

Author Reply: Oh,and I made it a plump cushion instead of a straw tick krabattos. I wanted to indicate it was movable, but nevertheless comfortable.
