Journey out of Darkness  by Armariel 82 Review(s)

Ah, each is having his own concerns with this new life! And it's rather nice seeing Smeagol finding acceptance as well as reminders of what he used to be, while Greenjade is painfully growing a conscience! Heh!

Author Reply: And it's going to get harder....but, such is life;)

This is definitely a folksong appropriate for Radagast the Brown if any is! Love how Greenjade is beginning to change whether he would or no! He's not certain what to think of all this, is he? And he's almost accepting that the apparently Dunedain mercenary deserves Nell.

I find myself wondering about the relationship between Radagast and Nell, myself. Wonder if his farmer's wife was from this area?

In places your writing is so very lyrical!

Very appropriate indeed;) (although I had to leave out a couple of verses that rang a trifle anachronistic and not too p.c.) Greenjade is making quite a bit of progress considering he's only been human for less than two days! Ok, maybe not wholly believable, but with a story you've got to suspend disbelief at times whether you like it or not. I think he has just given birth to a conscience, however, and has a suspicion that acquiring a human soul is not going to be all fun and games and hearts and flowers. And he already knows he is not worthy of Nell and may never be--how's he going to explain his past to her, after all??

Could be, could be....maybe Nell is his great-great-granddaughter? He may never know.....but there has to be *some* reason why he sees fit to visit this particular village once more;)

Thank you, thank you.....I love writing poetic prose;);)

I think I may be liking Greenjade a little bit now if he's going to rediscover the goodness he could have been and had and may now recover.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: Well...he's been human for less than two days now;) and it looks as though he's already given birth to a conscience. It's definitely a start, and should come as a rather pleasant surprise to Radagast, who surely didn't expect it so soon....

Thanks once more for your input!:):):):)

I hope Radagast is successful in teaching Greenjade some manners about women and the proper treatment of them. Dear me! He's got his work cut out for him, doesn't he. *applauds wizard for his kind words so far about us*

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: LOL...well, I've a feeling Greenjade may have to learn the hard way. He's just a trifle hard-headed. Hopefully Radagast has a "reserve tank" of patience. Yep, he's definitely going to need it! (But he thanks you for the applause;))

Ah, dear--his curiosity stifled by the guy at the next table, then. Poor Greenjade.

Apparently the bone wasn't so good if Nilde preferred a pinecone to it! And poor Smeagol is denying his own past, both Frodo and what the Ring made of himself. I bet he is shocked to see himself as he once was, before the Ring took him.

Interesting interlude!

Author Reply: Well, my sister's dog likes pinecones much better than bones, it seems!;)

Smeagol is still in denial, yes. Some truths are just a bit hard to face up to. I dare say the sight of his reflection did come as a bit of a shock, but on the other hand, he's likely to be vastly pleased with the improvement! Greenjade has a ways to go, himself, although I'm a bit puzzled over how he's taking shape here. He was conceived in Light from the West as a sort of monster, and here he's coming across more as a rather charming rogue.... But hopefully the muse knows what she's doing!

Interesting to use one of the professor's thoughts of what may have happened at the Fire if the dawning love of Smeagol for Frodo hadn't been destroyed on the Stairs - that of voluntarily falling into the Fire with the Precious. Of course Sam is partly to blame for what happened on the Stairs but he is not responsible completely, Smeagol is, as he says so himself - we didn't want to be good anymore. Greenjade's dream was interesting.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: I think maybe Sméagol is in denial and is trying to re-shape the story into what he wants it to be as a way of trying to redeem himself, but of course it won't work. It may be a while before he can face up to the truth. Greenjade's journey to redemption may be even more difficult......although truth be known, he's turning out a bit different from what I intended, rather than an evil monstrous Sauron wanna-be, he comes across at times more as a rather charming rogue, it seems...but then psychopaths can be very charming;) Well, but I guess my muse knows what she's doing...lol

Thanks once more for your comments; I highly value them....

I was pleasantly surprised and excited to see another story of yours and just the one I wanted too! Sorry to be so late in getting around to read, but this is intriguing, my dear, especially Smeagol's desires, the tower that is actually going down than up and that they will now make Mordor a sacred place for good now. Radagast will make an interesting guide and they will indeed learn things from each other. Interesting too that he said he was the only who sent the Eagles to the Fire.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: Yes, the bunny finally bit!;) I drifted away from Middle-earth for a time, but now I'm back and it's as if you had been on a long trip and now home looks a bit strange to you...lol

Yes, I read somewhere that Radagast was the one who sent the Eagles to Mt. Doom, although I don't remember it saying so in the book. Also he sent the Eagle to Gandalf when he was imprisoned by Saruman, I believe. And that he was not allowed to sail west because he had become much fonder of birds and beasts than of people, and had not done enough in the struggle against Sauron, and it never does say whether he redeemed himself sufficiently. Hopefully in this story he can do so....

Interesting experiences with bath and not recognizing reflection. The need to control his reproductive instincts is going to be a difficulty, I see! And the identification of a pine cone as a woody flower? Appropriate! Love his POV!

Author Reply: I've just been recalling Tale of the Body Thief in which the vampire Lestat, wishing to recover his lost humanity, swaps bodies with a mortal man, and then doesn't seem to know what to do with himself. Greenjade seems to be in a somewhat similar predicament. But no one said it would be easy, did they?;)

Greenjade has lost so much, and does not ever appear to have known compassion. Well, it is time to start now! And he will learn it, I'm certain.

As for Gollum--he seeks to prettify his memories, but then to shift blame to Frodo--and will learn to accept the truth eventually, I hope.

Sam holds their memories for them, I fear.

Glad to see the new chapter, Armariel!

He lacks self-knowledge, I think, and has remained frozen in a childlike state, in which he believes that others should defer to him, and he does not know how to please them because he thinks everyone else feels as he does. And he does not know how to love yet. Here's hoping he will learn, but it won't happen overnight!

Gollum is definitely in denial. But maybe yes, he'll learn.

Sam holds their memories for them, I fear.

Glad to see the new chapter, Armariel!

And I'm glad to see your comments, Larner!:):):):)
Although I'm having a hard time answering because I have a new kitten and he's all over me at the moment.......)

As with my view of Frodo he seeks a return to innocense, but in the end asks for Truth instead. A dangerous boon to beg--to know Truth. It's not always comfortable, after all.

Love the images here, and Smeagol's wish to again be a normal, accepted being within the world and society.

I'm not sure if Greenjade is really seeking the truth, or if he just doesn't want to say what he really desires yet. I'm vaguely thinking of him as a sort of Faust/Don Juan/Tannhaüser-ish figure, who wishes to transcend the common and embrace a greater destiny, but whose ego is such that he cannot allow himself to truly connect with others in a life-giving way. To do so is, to his way of thinking, a weakness. He does yearn to return to innocence, but knows it isn't going to happen, at least in the way he wishes. And maybe he knows he wouldn't be content with it, even if it did happen.

Love the images here, and Smeagol's wish to again be a normal, accepted being within the world and society.

That pretty much sums it up for Smeagol, who is a far simpler being. Whether it will happen or not, remains to be seen.

Oh yes, thanks for commenting, Larner!:):):):):)
