It's good to see an update of this story! Bilbo returned at the last moment, didn't he? And the hobbits may be in for another surprise when Bilbo begins to show them what he's learnt. I like his dangerous glint in the eye! Author Reply: Yes, I had a hard time with this one. The first part was easily written, but I agonized over Bilbo's grand entree for quite some time. And no, the SBs haven't seen anything yet. This is a very different Bilbo than the one they used to know.

Excellent! Love Drogo's reluctance to remain, and him being the one who saw and recognized Bilbo's return first! And Lobelia IS Lobelia--at her most acquisitive! Author Reply: Thanks, Larner. :) Coming from you, it's quite the compliment. In fact, despite what I might think of the movies, the Drogo-scene was inspired by that at the beginning of FOTR, when Frodo comes running toward Gandalf in joy. I thought he must have inherited that spontaneity from someone. *g*

It's certainly in the nick of time Bilbo shows up! Your characterization of Drogo is lovely; agree that he would have been fond of Bilbo for later events to happen like they did. Oh, and I really liked Holman, too - very firm in keeping Lobelia out of the smial until the sale started. lol Now that Bilbo's back, will he tell us about the Elf-root? ;-) Lissa Author Reply: I will, I promise... although there will be trouble first. But I'll try to be faster with the next update. :)

Well I don't usually write Hobbit stories you said, well I don't usually read them either, but I will be reading this one, it's very interesting and I'd like to give good old Lobella a kick in the rear, LOL! Hugs The Imp Author Reply: Thanks, Imp! :) I'll try to keep it light-hearted and interesting... after all, the whole thing was inspired by a LJ discussion about vegetable, hard as it might be to believe. ;o)

I was happy to see an update. This is so fun to read; it is like sitting cozily to listen to the town gossip, who-married-who and who-does-what. I like that I am able to feel for all these hobbits who may be affected by the change going on in Bag End. It is almost a shame that Lobelia is so disliked - I wonder if she even realizes it. Very fitting that Drogo should be the first to greet Bilbo home; oh, Bilbo'd better go faster. *bites nails* I probably said this before, but I always am anxious towards the end of The Hobbit for Bilbo - after all, he might not make it in time to have a home this time. Well, I am in suspense; good chapter! : ) -Kitt Author Reply: Yep, sometimes I feel that we all like to hate Lobelia a bit too much, perhaps. But at least she's interesting to write. I thought that Drogo must have had a good relationship to Bilbo, or else Frodo would not come to like him so much. And fear not, Bilbo *will* arrive in time. After all, he has to introduce his fellow hobbits to the elf-root...

What a wonderful chapter!! I *LOVE* that it is Drogo who first spots Bilbo coming up the hill, and his joy at the sight! Ah, the cats will be among the pigeons now! I also love all those minor and OC characters you have discussing things at the beginning--it reminds me so much of the first couple of chapters in LotR, in The Ivy Bush and in The Green Dragon, with all of the hobbits gossiping. I especially like your Holman Greenhand--what a wonderful character he is! I am *so* looking forward to the rest of this! *grin* Bilbo's got quite a surprise coming to him--and he's going to give one as well! Author Reply: Thanks. :)) I thought Drogo would be the obvious choice. Someone *had* to spot Bilbo sooner or later, right? Old Missus Crabtree was inspired by a lady friend of my grandmother's. She was so absolutely charming but had a sharp eye for character and not easily intimidated by anyone, not even by her somewhat... nerve-killing husband. I like Holman, too, although, interestingly, he's the only character without a Real Life model so far. Perhaps it will come to me later whom he's alike... I'm like Miss Marple in this.

What a lovely peek behind the scenes! The hobbits seem so very much like I imagine them, and I'm sure the Master himself would have written approved of their behaviour. However, I can't wait to learn more about that Elf-Root ... Lissa Author Reply: Thank you, Lissa. :) I'm proud that the Hobbits look believable to you. As for learning more, the Elf-root won't appear just yet, but the next chapter is up - have fun!

Your title 'Elf-root' caught my attention right away. As for being 'Hobbity'...well, with your wonderful Beta and your tale-telling talent...just don't fret. You are 'getting the Hobbits right'. I am awaiting the next chapter with anticipation. Author Reply: Don't worry, there's nothing indecent in that name... although some old-fashioned Hobbits might be suspicious at first. *g*

*APPLAUSE!* This is wonderful! I know you seldom write about hobbits--but you have done a marvelous and meticulous job with this, getting down the genealogy and the hobbity primness and propriety with exactly the right note! And I love what you are doing with this--I've personally always thought that Bilbo's Uncle Longo was behind the efforts to get Bag End, because Otho was not yet of age! I can't wait to see what comes next! This is the kind of fic I search for often, and seldom find! Author Reply: Thanks.:) Actually, I've never written about hobbits before, and the family trees dorwnright frightened me. The harderst part was to get the hobbitspeak right, and in that, Larner's help was invaluable.

Oh, very hobbity! The rules, the do's, the dont's, and the women's chatter was all fun to read. I like seeing what led up to the sale at Bag End (one of my favorite parts in The Hobbit). I'd like to tell Bilbo to hurry home... before Lobelia and Otho sell everything. (eek) -Kitt :) Author Reply: I'm glad you find that I got the hobbits right. The female OCs (and later the male ones) are all based on people I used to know in real life - yeah, I've met my share of queer people - so it's great fun to write them. But making them suitable hobbity, that's the hard part.
