The Great Hobbiton Race of 1435  by Llinos 137 Review(s)
InklingReviewed Chapter: 1 on 5/27/2007
*snort!* Why do I get the feeling Merry and Pippin will be peddling snake oil next? Funny stuff, Llinos!

Trust Pippin! Too much or too little, that's our lad!

Only a small portion of the hedge lost? A blessing, I'm certain.

Author Reply: So far, so good. It can't get worse - surely?

Thanks for reading and reviewing. I'll try to be better at answering!

They didn't read the rules? Oh, dear; and now Sam is having to give them advice! Why am I not surprised?

This is going to be fun, I think.

A race? Seems that those that race machines against men--or Hobbits, in this case--don't always come off too well in the endeavor.

Pippin getting in and doing, Merry and his technical jargon and schematics, and wise Sam and his retreat to a speech in preference to getting caught up with this--thingamabob! So wonderful!

Aha! A steam-driven lawnmower! Now, that's something new! Heh!

DreamflowerReviewed Chapter: 4 on 5/26/2007
Oh dear! Merry and Pippin didn't pay a lot of attention to the Rules--and I would bet Sam had something in there not only about how *quickly* the job was done, but how well.

This whole tale reminds me of some American folk tales, such as John Henry and Paul Bunyan, and their valiant efforts against mechanization!

Author Reply: Oh Sam wouldn't do such a thing! Would he? Well we'll see.

I know nothing of these tales of which you speak, although plenty about Luddites!

I really love Sam's reasoning for accepting the challenge. He knows what good friends they are, and after what they've been through together, no silly competition will drive any wedges between them.

Frodo-lad tickles me no end.

"Of course it's safe!" Merry had to shout over the racket of the crying, shouting and the loud thumping of the engine. "It's a beauty. It's got a superheater header; main steam pipes to the cylinders, blower and ejector exhaust pipes. It's even fitted with a spark arrestor, to say nothing of the drop grate and hopper ashpan."

*giggle* Trust Merry to be captivated by the technology! Just imagine what a geek he'd be in today's world!

I read this part in the challenge but I decided to enjoy it here again. I love all of the guesses as to what the machine does.

("Does it make something?" Ralf Bolger peered underneath to see if he could find any clues there.) LOL

This is a great story idea and very original! I've not seen anything like it and Merry and Pippin would be the very ones to bring in something new.

LOL, maybe they ought to let Matt drive the contraption! I have a sneaking suspicion that the Shire just isn't ready for a Great Steam Vapour Spindle Activated Vegetation Dissection and Lubrication Apparatus, or maybe *it* isn't ready for them. ;-) I love Merry and Pippin, but I think I'm putting my money with Sam this time.

Waiting for more...

Author Reply: Well they did consider letting Matt drive, but Marigold pointed out, that would be "outside help" so I guess we're stuck with Pippin for now. Until Merry runs out of patience.

Ah you never know how these things might turn out, keep your money secret and safe is my advice!

Thanks for reading and reviewing.
