Dawning Hope  by Radbooks 35 Review(s)
daw the minstrelReviewed Chapter: 2 on 4/8/2007
I have a sad and shallow confession. Movie!Theodred was so gorgeous (even dead) that I'm intrigued by him. I liked this glimpse of him with his cousins, and also his memory of their father as his first captain.

Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing, daw! I agree that Movie Theodred WAS very, very good looking and when we watch the movie my friend and I often talk about him and wish we could have seen him alive and talking. :) I felt like there needed to be something to tie Theodred closer to the children, something besides the fact he was their cousin and I felt that it was reasonable that his uncle would have been his first captain.

And the loyalty between Eomer and Theodred is begun. Theodred is at least willing to open himself to the children, which is important.

Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing, Larner! Yes, I'm sure that Eomer started looking up to Theodred right away in the manner that most young boys do to an older cousin or to some 'hero' that they know. And, Theodred is already beginning to feel protective towards both Eomer and Eowyn.

Changes of this magnitude can be difficult indeed. I'm rather glad Theodred overheard the conversation and has an idea how to help.

Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing, Larner! Oh, I can't imagine losing both parents so close together and then having to move to a new city like they did. I thought that there had been some lag time between the deaths of their parents but they did die in the same year, though it doesn't say how far apart the deaths were. Very, very difficult for the children, though children are resilient.

I like your portrayal of Theodred! He's picking his way carefully, which bodes well. I always feel sorry for him, getting cut down so early in his life, but this makes me feel like he got to experience some of the sweeter, more gentle parts of life than one might suppose. He seems a very nice young man. Looking forward to more!

Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing the chapter, Elanor! I'm glad that you enjoy how I portray Theodred, it was fun trying to figure him out. I've always wanted to know more about him and he's one of those characters I wish Tolkien had written more about.

You made me feel for all three of them here, poor Theodred never having known a mother's love !

Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing the chapter, Linda. I had to put that part in about him never knowing his mother... it just seemed important to me to show that he'd never had that love... it was sad.

LOL @ Theodred having agreed to take them out riding the next day. Did he have any choice in the matter? :) I'm glad he's showing an interest in them and determined to help them. And no, I'm sure he hasn't seen the true Eowyn or Eomer just yet. It may take them some time to come out of their grief and be comfortable in their new home. Good chapter.

Author Reply: Thanks, Misty! Theodred might have seen the true Eowyn and Eomer when they started talking about the horses... that might have brought them out of their grief. :) They are true Eorlingas after all!

Very nice chapter - a little difficult for Theodred, being he was so much older than these two 'new' cousins... I liked the puzzlement he is going through... should be a fun ride.

Thanks for sharing it!

Author Reply: Thanks again for reviewing, Agape! While I know Theodred would have been around children - sons and daughters of servants and friends - it's not the same as having them in your household and getting to see them up close and interacting with them on a personal level. I'm glad you're enjoying it.

This is enchanting and I like the voices you give the children. Looking forward to more!

Author Reply: Thanks so much for your very kind words!

I liked this. Poor Eowyn, trying to adjust to a new life without her mother. That would be so hard on a child. I do hope Theodred will do his best to help her out. He seems to be rather protective of his cousins, which is a good thing. I look forward to the next chapter.

Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing Misty! I don't know how Eowyn and Eomer handled losing their mom and dad within the same year... it had to have been devastating to them. Children are very resilient, though. The next chapter will probably be posted this weekend sometime.

Hi Radbooks, thanks for linking to this story. I think this is the first one I've read about *young* Eomer and Eowyn, and I liked it very much. I felt so sorry for Eowyn; it was hard enough losing everything and then finding a rather cold nursemaid in her new home. Eomer was just right - loving but still an ornery brother!

Author Reply: Thanks for the review Pentangle! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I don't think I've ever seen a story about a young Eowyn and Eomer either. It was just one of those ideas that came to me when I was trying to think of an idea for the prompt word, 'abandoned'. This story strayed from that original idea, but that was where this started... it's funny where things start and where they end up. I was looking at the Teitho contest for this upcoming month and this story would fit it perfectly... well, if it was open to any LOTR characters! :)
