Branwyn's Bric-à-Brac  by Branwyn 94 Review(s)

OH MY GOSH - I was ROTFL - very good portrayal of our dear Boromir - I wonder if he was the death of the loremaster!

Author Reply: I was thinking of Tolkien's remark that Boromir was uninterested in matters of lore--except for tales of battles. Headstrong, intelligent, and energetic, he must have been a challenge to teach!
Thanks for reviewing. :-)

And so faithful service is ignored as despair at last brings about the destruction of Denethor's integrity. A grief indeed.

Alas, Denethor fails to appreciate the distinction. He doesn't recognize that Gandalf offers ever choice, while Sauron would snatch away all choices if so allowed.

A beautiful tribute to Robert Frost as well as Faramir's affection, undimmed after decades, for his lost brother. The language is understated, lovely and unforced, the narrative just flows out to create a perfect snapshot of a winter's day in Rohan, and a strong but old man looking wistfully towards the road taken by a brother he will see again at a later time.

Loved it that Faramir can still sing, and a Rohirric yule song at that - very appropriate for Eowyn's husband.

Author Reply: I imagine that Eowyn would teach her children some of the traditions of her people, and there might have been holiday visits to Edoras. So it didn't seem too unlikely that Faramir would have learned a few Rohirric songs.
Thanks so much for your kind review!

This drabble uses a striking image and reads emotionally true. I like it a lot.

Author Reply: I am glad that you liked it, and thanks for commenting! Though I have to admit that, back in the day, I was a poor hand at geometry. :-)

Snork! Very, very funny! You managed to get all seven in there, adroitly and naturally.

Poor Thorin. Somewhere, Gandalf is probably chuckling.

Author Reply: I had to write this after I told Lord Branwyn the idea and he said he didn't think it was possible to sneak all seven dwarves (dwarfs?) in with only a hundred words. So he is to blame for this one. :-D
Thanks for the kind words!

Succint and evocative; the thought patterns are very much what I would expect of Faramir.

And the idea of the gentle lessoning in how to kill is haunting.

Author Reply: It must have been such a relief for him when he could finally lay down arms. To stay sane, some people might rationalize the killing or try not to think about what they were doing, but Faramir would never have been that easy on himself. He would not have doubted that what he did was necessary, but he still would have felt horror at killing.
Glad you like this, and thanks for writing.

Hooray - one of Denethor's servants had some gumption and common sense. Sadly, Denethor had no use for common sense at that time. At least Mormegil will be able to sleep well at night after the Pyre and Faramir's rescue and healing.

Good work in 100 words, as always.

I always thought Arwen got a raw deal in exchange for her patience - Aragorn got to have a dignified death of his own choosing, Arwen goes off into a fading wood and dies alone...Sheesh. This drabble brings out her sadness and unbearable longing.

A grief they have so little time left together, Finduilas and her sons. And I am glad she is not unhappy about the flowers being pulled up by their roots.

Author Reply: No, she wouldn't be angry about the flowers. Boromir probably did the same thing when he was that age. Many times. :-)

Thanks for writing!
