Avoidance  by Stefania 92 Review(s)

Hello!

This is the first story that I have read that has Eowyn and Faramir as the main characters (I love Aragorn stories, especially with Arwen in them!). But I've been popping my little ol' nose in each update and found myself very intrigued.

I've enjoyed this immensely so far. I do wish that PJ elaborated more with Faramir and Eowyn's story as Faramir's character was so endearing. This gap filler is truly excellent and is very satisfying. You've truly kept my interest up. Bravo! Keep up the good work.

Happy Holidays!

PS - I'm very interested to know your take on Arwen "becoming mortal". I would definitely read that piece.

Author Reply: Why thank you, RS. I'm glad that "Avoidance" has held your interest for so long.

Regarding Arwen becoming mortal, I've never written anything on that subject other than the little paragraph near the conclusion of "What Eowyn Was Avoiding." I've wanted to do a brief Arwen fic on that subject for awhile. But first, I need to bite the bullet and conclude "Avoidance."

I'm glad that you and many other people are still hanging in with me.

You've written a plausible version of the great Tolkien F/E scene. I loved the Ioreth commentary and Eowyn's response. One wonders if Faramir and Eowyn will, now betrothed, go off and play "doctor" in some quiet corner.

Good re-introduction of Aragorn and Arwen as a King and Queen who are approachable as well as powerful. I liked Aragorn and Faramir's rapport; and Arwen's efforts to reach out to Eowyn.

It's quite possible that Arwen's transition to mortality began with the onset of her courses.

Author Reply: Hi Raksha -

Happy holidays to you!

Whew. I'm relieved that you find my "take" on F/E reasonably believable. You say:

"One wonders if Faramir and Eowyn will, now betrothed, go off and play "doctor" in some quiet corner."

All I can say is, the next chapter will wrap matters up and show what Faramir was avoiding. He and Eowyn's increasing urges to go off in a corner and, uh, cuddle, will certainly drive the poor boy crazy, I suspect.

How Arwen realized that she had become mortal has long been a plot bunny biting at my feet. Maybe some day I'll devote a short take to the elleth and her transition.

Hee, now I'm envisioning Imrahil as a Gondorian Yente...

And I loved both Aragorn's reasoning for sending Pippin (right on!) and the rewording of the famous wall scene. The style is definitely your writing, but keeps the spirit of Tolkien's. Looking forward to her response. ;)

Author Reply: Hi SMOR -

Sorry for being so slow to respond. I've been sidetracked by work writing and holiday issues, like everyone else.

Stay tuned for more of the wall scene and some matters that probably never occured to Tolkien, as "Avoidance" draws ever closer to its conclusion. Thanks for your support.

I keep missing the updates on this one. Grr.

I enjoyed this chapter greatly though-- the part where Faramir was resigned to loving Eowyn no matter who she married (if she did at all) was quite touching, and the part with the cat was cute. (I always thought black cats being bad luck was rather silly anyway, even though I've only had orange tabbies.)

And I think Eowyn's heart is definitely changing in favor of the Steward, even if she doesn't realize it. The cordial note from Eomer was a nice change from what I usually see in fanon too (even my own... but then, Eomer doesn't know that Faramir's actually in love with his sister, not just friends, yet. And I blame the old Farafics community for that particular plot bunny anyway. ;)

WOOOOOHOOOO!!

(I can't be any more articulate than that - I'm so happy with the updates)
Cheers,

Author Reply: I'm glad you're happy, Chibi. You might be surprised to know that I think of you sometimes when writing these chapters and hope that you like them. You've covered the same story differently but so well.

Unlike the last few chapters, "Putting Two Together" wrote itself. I've had the idea for it for at least a year. Plus I wanted to get it done before I went to New Jersey to visit my family for Thanksgiving. I've given myself a deadline of December 31st to finish "Avoidance." Don't know if I can, but I'm sure gonna try.

Stay tuned, and thanks for the review.

I'm glad Faramir has finally asked the question. I liked Imrahil in your story and the idea of Eomer being given many offers for Eowyn's hand is very plausible.

Author Reply: Hi Linda -

Thanks for all the support that you've given "Avoidance." I am really fond of Imrahil as a fan fic character. He's just sketchy enough in canon that he leaves room for those of us who want to play with him.

In regard to Eomer receiving lots of offers for Eowyn, I envision Eowyn as the most eligible human female in all of Middle Earth. So if you are a single noble human male and looking to make a political match, wouldn't you want a gorgeous gal who just happens to be second in line to the throne of Rohan?

This chapter and the next planned chapter also tie in to the story "Family Matters" that I wrote last year for SoA. So I had to be careful that what I wrote in "Putting Two Together" jibed with "Family Matters."

Thanks again !!

It's about time Faramir revealed his feelings to Eowyn! I love how Imrahil and Galadriel, independantly, pushed him to take steps to assure the happy future awaiting him. And I suspect that both Imrahil and Galadriel will be very pleased with themselves after Eowyn has agreed to marry Faramir...

Good to see Pippin back in Minas Tirith and helping his friend Faramir...

Author Reply: Howdy, Raksha -

I'm glad you liked this. Faramir had as much trouble popping the question to Eowyn as i have trying to write his story. Sometimes you just can't find the words.

BTW, Pippin and Imrahil are in the story for its remaining duration. Folks like them and I have more than passing fondness for the two.

An odd chapter, nothing really happening. The calm before the storm?

Now I wonder who this High Elven Lord might be. Could it be - could it be --- Thranduil?? That would be great. But I guess I'll have to wait a long, long time ere I'll know...

Thank you!

Author Reply: Hi Irene -

Thanks so for following along.

This was my "character" chapter for Faramir, to show what it was that he was avoiding telling Eowyn about two years into their marriage. It and the previous chapter were the setup for the big stuff, which I hope will be a lot easier to write.

Hang in there.

- Steff

Author Reply: And one more thing, I inadvertently deleted your review of the chapter "Putting Two Together." I'm soooo sorry. I just wanted to edit my reply, which had a typo, and wound up deleting the whole thing. My sincere apologies.

I just loved this chapter, especially the cat. You have some great comic lines concerning it from both Ioreth and Eowyn.I have added cats to my own stories as I am owed by four ! A very enjoyable read.

Author Reply: Thanks, Linda. This chapter was so hard to write--one last chance for Faramir angst before his life is about to change big time.

I wanted so badly to give him a little black cat to help in his loneliness, grief, and uncertainty about his future. Animals are so good at doing that. Cirion's been on my mind for at least two years. He finally found his way onto the pages of my story.

And yes, those of us who love cats should put them in our fan fiction, especially since Tolkien just didn't understand felines.

A good, poignant chapter. Faramir's pondering what would the people of Gondor do in peacetime was particularly effective, neither he nor any of his generation have ever been free of Mordor-fear before.

Cute bit about the kitty. I've always thought that Faramir would have house dogs and cats in Ithilien, and maybe a pet or two in his quarters in Minas Tirith, post-ROTK.

So when will Aragorn send for Faramir? Or will he wait until the coronation to inform Faramir that the job of Steward is still his?

Author Reply: Hi Raksha -

I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter of "blood, sweat, and tears." I liked your story "Luck from the Ashes" but was disappointed that you gave Faramir a white cat. Geez. So I had to give him a black cat, which would tell you something about what type of cat I have.

I absolutely agree about Faramir and Eowyn having lots of animals in Ithilien. Medieval people lived tooth and jowl with all sorts of animals, not just those that we keep today as pets. I imagine them having herding dogs and hunting dogs, cats to keep down the rodent population, falcons, and maybe even the exotic parrot or two. Not to mention the horses and the other critters in the barn!

Thanks for helping me out with "Avoidance."
