This and That  by Lindelea 237 Review(s)

This really is a lovely Yule story Lindelea. Trouble with tear-jerkers before work is that I have to wash my face again! And it has reminded me of a story I want to read again!

Author Reply: Ah, the perils of wearing makeup. Almost makes me happy to be allergic to the stuff.

Thanks!

Oh, this was just lovely. Poor Faramir. Just young enough to hope, but too old to believe. And desperate, poor lad. Willing to clutch at any straw in the wish to save his father.

I wonder if the talented author has any more insights into Faramir around this time - when he had begun to develop greater responsibility, yet was too young to accept as he was watching with the rest as Pippin died by inches.

Delightful story. I like Regi, too. Makes a very good secretary to Father Yule. And knows enough to be prepared.

Author Reply: Flattery will get you something, I forget what.

Well, I do believe that Faramir had begun to develop responsibility around the time of "Down and Out". You might or might not know that he found work in the stables at the end of "Runaway". By the beginning of "At the End of His Rope" he is quite grown up for his age, even to the point of helping however he can manage, after the coach accident, including helping to deliver the twins.

So far as future stories set during this time frame, well, anything is possible, so long as the Muse is in a good mood.

Thanks! (And sorry for the belated reply.)

This is such a lovely story and I remember reading it a year ago but it was definitely worth reading over and just perfect timing too since I¨m leaving for my own holiday in a few hours.

Happy Yule, Lin! And thanks for a year of wonderful stories. :D I am very much looking forward to another year of them.

(((((Lin))))))

Author Reply: I hope you had a wonderful holiday!

And thanks for the good words.

Even as a baby Pippin managed to put himself right into the center of the Yule celebrations! Heh! And he put himself in the box, and none was the wiser.

Author Reply: Funny how he managed that! I think it was a sign of things to come.

Utterly, totally, wonderfully charming :) :) I love Pippin getting wrapped up in the shawl and then packed away. And I love the "son of a Brandybuck" and "son of a Took"!! And even Lalia not being too horrid.

A wonderful Yule gift :) Many thanks!

Author Reply: Amazing, isn't it, that Lalia could be hobbity sometimes? LOL

he was overcome by curiosity and excitement to be surrounded by so many bright ribbons, and enticing paper that crumpled and tore with satisfying sounds and sensations! He rolled a little further into the fallen heap and found himself enveloped in softness. He rolled once more, wrapping the softness round himself, and pulling the soft folds of the lovely knitted shawl against his cheek with one hand, he found his mouth with the thumb of the other hand and resumed his interrupted nap.

Awwwww! Totally adorable. Happy Yule, Lindelea!

Author Reply: This is sort of based on one of our young ones, who learned to roll before she was three months old, and at a baby shower was so fascinated with the bright wrappings and ribbons that she rolled herself right into the middle of them!

Thanks!

What a sweet and delightful little surprise to wake up to this morning! I do remember the shorter version of course, but this is just as cute as it can be! All the details that make your Shire unique and delightful are there, and old Lalia in a good mood at the end, for once!

And of course I am enjoying the fun and friendship between Merry and Ferdi; it's funny they were going to quarrel over Pippin! Merry of course, was quite right. Yet in a strange way, when they became adults, circumstances actually brought Ferdi into the position of "special" cousin as well. I do adore that *Merry's* trump argument was "Frodo says"! LOL!

I will have to go and look out the original--for I don't recall which of the hobbits told it, nor how he came to know how it happened. But that will be fun as well, for then I can read all the other contributions!

Author Reply: Thanks!

I looked out the original as well, and it was just as fun to read this year as it was earlier.

Letting Merry and Ferdi near the pile of gifts seems remarkably reckless - even if Pearl really badly needed to 'go'. But it worked out all right in the end.

Love the image of the little cooing Pippin emerging from the wrappings.

Author Reply: I think that Pearl wasn't thinking all too clearly at that moment; sheer desperation sums up her attitude.

Thanks!

So, Gandalf would cast doubt on the influence he had on Isengar going off to sea, would he? Nice tie-in to your longer story, to which I look forward still, you know! Anyway, I can see that, given a chance, Isengar did wake up and was able to be clearheaded and free-spirited again.

Love the polar bears and the seals. Bungo's reaction reminded me of reading Herodotus the first time and laughing at his surety that the shadows wouldn't lie to the south if one went around the horn of Africa.

Author Reply: Yes, Isengar did wake up, and there may even be another adventure or two in the not-so-old hobbit... We'll see.

Herodotus. I haven't read Herodotus. Do you recommend him?

A good title and a great tale Lindelea. Now I must nip off and put the fire on!

Author Reply: O yes, a fire's the thing. *shiver*

Think I'll fill a hot-water bottle and seek my bed...

Don't know why wet cold (it's rainy now) is so much *colder* than dry cold! (Now that the ice from the weekend's snow-and-ice storm has melted.)
