Healing the Long Cleeve  by TopazTook 161 Review(s)

I absolutely understand why Pippin didn't consummate their marriage. If he had consummated, it would have been just an act, and eventually it could have frozen their relationship in THIS state. Brrr! It was very thoughtful of him to wait till they would be a little more comfortable in each other company, otherwise it would have been only for lust, a phisycal thing, without heart and love, wich does NOT strenghten and deepen any relationship, or make it more intimate, as the lovemaking is meant to be. I feel there is a long way ahead of them.

Author Reply: Bingo! You are right on target...can I send Pippin over to you if he ever needs to be psychoanalyzed? And as for Pippin and Diamond, there is at least a long story ahead of them. (Chapter Five -- whew. Took me 2 hours to type the thing, and I'm a fast typer.)

Diamond is much of an innocent here. I wonder with all the emphasis that her parents placed on Diamond being a proper wife to Peregrin, that they neglected to instruct her in all her duties. Obviously Pippin had no intention of consummating the marriage that first night, or he wouldn't have staged the trick with the blooding to stave off gossip. Had he decided this on his own as a protest, or did he have some idea that the ruse would be required? From the worried faces the next morning, I wonder if he had walked in and declared her unsatisfactory would the marriage be dissolved? Somehow I think that would be more worrisome to the parents on both sides who seem to be feeling guilty about selling their children, than thoughts about whether the wedding night proceeded without undue difficulty.

I hope Pippin decides it's worth it to try to bring Diamond out of her shell. She's got to get some backbone and a sense of her own worth, or it's going to be a very unhappy life for them both. And that would be a real shame, since I think Pippin would be one of the most interesting, fun and exasperating people to be married to.

Author Reply: Actually, Diamond's father thought everything had been taken care of; it's her mother that's fallen down on the job. And the mothers aren't feeling exactly guilty -- as, in this patriarchal society, none of this was their decision -- they're both just worried about their kids.
Pippin's "trick" was because he knew that the importance of this marriage was such that someone would be assigned to check the sheets. If they had found nothing -- if he said Diamond had refused him or that the evidence showed she was "damaged goods" (I wish I could think of a better way to phrase that, but I'm trying to keep this story at PG-13), then the marriage probably would have been dissolved. But that, of course, would go contrary to his whole motivation of going along with the idea to promote unity in the Shire.
I, too, think Pippin is an interesting and fun character, but alas, he is married...and, come to think of it, so am I.;)

What a chapter! I'm so glad Merry wasn't angry at Pip for too long. I can understand why he was so mad though. If I found out my best friend had been keeping a secret from me for seven years I'd be just as upset as Merry. Also, on the wedding night, with Pip cutting himself...it just shows how much of a gentle-hobbit he is. I like him all the more for it. I hope that Diamond will be able to express her opinions, and I hope she will get to know Pippin better. But of course she will, they are married after all. :) Thanks for the chapter! I'll shut up and read the next one now. Alayna

Author Reply: Yeah, you can be upset at people who are your friends, even though they're still your friends -- especially if you think they're hurting themselves. I'm glad you liked Pip's gentlehobbitly ways. Feel free to wax on about my chapters before you move to the next...or come back and comment again.:)

Merry was pretty rude to Diamond, I suppose on some level he blames her for Pippin being in an arranged marriage instead of a love match. Pippin is trying to get to know Diamond, but she's not showing much of herself yet. Poor Diamond will have a lot to learn and unlearn.

Author Reply: Merry's still angry about the whole thing, but now he's taking it out on Diamond instead of Pippin. Don't discount the possibility that other hobbits might learn something from Diamond as well, before this story is through.

Oh, it gets better and better! But I wouldn't mind angst a bit, since I like it. Anyway, I am better to give up imagining, I leave it to you, I am sure I won't be disappointed. I anticipate more hardships for Pippin and Diamond... My best line: “And having his best friend be angry at him for being miserable is supposed to make him feel better?” The lasses always see the essence of the matter. :)

Author Reply: Oh, thanks and thanks! And I like angst too; didn't mean to imply that I don't. Don't give up imagining--life would be quite dull without it! I'm glad you liked that line. Estella, at least, does seem to cut to the quick of things.

There seems to be quite the inferiority complex about the North-tooks, one they are over compensating for. Poor Diamond, what *lovely* advice her mother offered to her. And not even knowing what to call the person she just married! Good thing Pippin is a gentlehobbot - I assume the blood is to convince everyone that the marriage has been consummated and is thus legal. At least Pervinca had fun planning things and I'm sure the guests enjoyed the food even if the bride and groom were not happy.

Author Reply: Of course, any resemblance between the prideful and independent hobbits of the "beautifully wooded" North Farthing and the Scandinavians and Finns who settled the northern reaches of the U.S. in upper Minnesota would be *completely* coincidental, I'm sure. ;)
Yes, Gerin probably thought for sure she'd taken care of it, but Honeysuckle does seem to have fallen down on the job a bit in this aspect of preparing Diamond for her marriage. But she may have her reasons....You're right, of course, about the reason for the blood. You know *somebody's" going to check those sheets.
Glad you're happy that Pervinca had fun planning. Of course, she might have gone a little overboard-- I think there were even more than six kinds of cake on those groaning tables!

Love the story!! Pippin is such a sneaky little devil!! :)
Keep the chapters coming !!

Author Reply: Thanks!! But his heart is in the right place -- and he wants them both to be happy!! More chapters coming!!

It's good! I can't wait for the next chapter. That part when Eglatine find out Pippin's scars, and then Pippin's reaction to the rope, that really gave my heart a leap. It will be a very difficult night for Pippin and Diamond when those scars under the clothes will be revealed. Also, I can imagine Merry and Pippin in Crickhollow, when Pippin refuses to chase or court any lasses and doesn't tell why, it would give him a very difficult time. So, as I said earlier, I can't wait for the next chapter!

Author Reply: Thanks!
Eglantine finding Pippin's scars, Pip's reaction to the rope...surely the author would not deliberately try to jerk at her readers' angst-o-meter... No, surely not. ( ;)See response to review below.)

Poor Pippin! And Diamond. I sure hope they will at least like each other... You've done a very good job torturing me, but I don't mind. I hope you will put up the next chapter soon! Alayna

Author Reply: The next chapter goes up tonight. And I'm glad you don't mind me "torturing" you. Angst. Aah, angst. ;)

Pippin's reaction to the rope, the cheerless ceremony, the lack of interaction between the parties. The flashbacks contrasted the promise of what might have been with stiff and uncomfortable reality. You have me curious about your Diamond. Aside from being pretty and subdued, shes a blank slate. I can see why her family wants her to marry Pippin, but what are her thoughts on the secret bethrothal to the Shire's Bachelor #1? It seems odd that there is no move made for Pippin to get to know her, even a little, or is this an 'out of sight, out of mind' situation? In Europe a formal bethrothal was a marriage in all but name, it had to be legally dissolved if one wanted to break it off or any marriage would be bigamous. I'm curious to see what Pippin says (or doesn't say) to his cousins about this.

Author Reply: The contrasting effect with the flashbacks was what I was trying to achieve.
As for some of your other wonderings: are you sure you're not channeling Merry? Some of these queries will be addressed in the next chapter...possibly even by Mr. Brandybuck.
As for Diamond, we, like Pippin, get just a glimpse of her in this chapter. I'm glad you're curious, because throughout this fic, as he -- and we -- get to know her, she will keep unfolding like a flower. (Oops. Wrong fandom. ;) )
