The Minstrel's Quest  by Gentle Hobbit 113 Review(s)
Reviewed Chapter: 12 on 7/29/2005
This is wonderful. You made me feel all of the joy and sorrow and Farohan's trepidation, and that you brought it all back to canon was just lovely. I've always loved that passage from the book. It makes my heart beat a bit faster, and I can almost hear the voices shouting acclaim for those two small, bewildered hobbits, then the minstrel's voice rising above them all, clear as a trumpet. Oh, my, it brings tears to my eyes. It's truly beautiful and I look forward to the next chapter.

Author Reply: I love that passage too--obviously, I suppose, since that one passage is what started me on this whole process of "discovering" the minstrel's own tale. To hear that it holds a similar emotional resonance for you too is warming for me to hear. Thank you so much for your review!

That's the best thing that could happen! Aragorn has not to decide about the lays. Menelor himself lets Farohan sing his lay! Wonderful.

As Merry said, he didn't recognize the words, he felt them. And that's exactly what is expressed in the last lines of your Tolkien quote:

"...and they passed in thought out to regions where pain and delight flow together and tears are the very wine of blessedness."

Thank you!

Author Reply: It truly is the best possible way, isn't it. It would be horrid for Farohan to have to have a falling out with Menelor over his first big lay.

The passage from ROTK with which you end this chapter now means so much more to me! You've filled in its history and emotions for us, and brought out the personality, heart, and spirit of a minstrel we never knew in a way I'll never forget.

Author Reply: What lovely words, Shirebound! That has been my aim, and to hear that the story has done that for you in such a way is a joy for me to hear. Bless you!

I have been enjoying this story since the beginning. This chapter and the one before are simply wonderful. Thanks

Author Reply: Thank you! I am glad that you have been enjoying it.

That words can wound and heal at the same time has always been true; it was a sweet wounding, I think. And I understand the Master's concern. Am so glad that Sam gets both lays. Yet even then Frodo is seen as the highest honored, yet the most grateful recipient likely to be Sam.

Author Reply: I agree with you. I have always seen Sam as being the most appreciative. After all, he was the one who thought and talked about it during the Quest, and the one who reacted with such lovely joy and exultation when the minstrel begged leave to sing. Frodo, perhaps, can appreciate it, but doesn't have the same exuberance and glee as Sam...

This is so beautiful!

I loved the image of Merry, Pippin, Legolas and Gimli sitting together in the night, talking quietly over the events of the day, and the way Merry seemingly had not actually *heard* the words, but just the *feeling* they gave him. And it was so sweet that they declared their friendship for Farohan--I do hope they get to see him once more, and that perhaps Frodo and Sam *can* meet him.

But best of all, I love that you quoted my favorite paragraph in RotK. That last paragraph is so beautiful it moves me every time I read it, and this was the perfect way to end the chapter.

Thank you very much!

You go Merry! I know Aragorn has a lot going on at the moment, but he shouldn't have been so dismissive of the hobbits' feelings on this. I'm glad he listened and is willing to give Farohan a chance. I loved your descriptions of both lays. It's good to know that Merry would have been satisified with Menelor's lay if it had come to that, but Farohan's time was well spent it seems. His teacher should have more faith in him in the future.

Author Reply: Poor Aragorn. Beset on all sides by the needs of all these different people (and his own desires for a finished lay!) But through it all, he has shown willingness to listen when reasonable words are spoken. He needed Merry to put his foot down, I think.

Wow! Farohan's lay has impressed Merry deeply, and me, too.
What happened to Merry is exactly what always happens to me when I listen to the brilliant soundtrack of Howard Shore. There, too, amongst the music of Gondor and Rohan and Mordor is always the voice of the Shire!
Aragorn should see this too. I really hope so!

Merry will be a good Master of Buckland, when the time comes :)

Author Reply: Merry will be a brilliant Master. Absolutely! And... what a lovely comment, that you likened Merry's experience with the lay to your own with Shore's soundtracks. Those soundtracks are brilliant, aren't they. Thank you, Andrea.

Sorry for reviewing twice but I had another thought. Aragorn was right when he said that the lay needed to speak to the people of Gondor. Merry was right when he says that Gondor will only understand through the words of the lay. The Shirefolk also need to understand what Sam and Frodo did, (and Merry and Pippin of course). Perhaps both lays are needed!

Author Reply: No worries! This is an interesting comment. Yes, just as Shirefolk need their voice to be heard in Gondor, so does Frodo need his voice to be heard back in his homeland. Alas, as we already know, his voice, one of the four Travellers, is the only one that isn't heard. A good bit of heroics in a lay would have woken the folk back home quite nicely!
