Cadenza  by Rose Sared 97 Review(s)

Ha, tease all you like, heartless Rose, I care not, hmph. Yes, not only do I reread stories, I print them out to do it! That's why the grumbling about the format. If you can't decide what you want to do anyway, let the dwarf out of the closet and start writing.

You DID get the formatting of chapter 12 fixed after all. Thank you! What about a new chapter of "Evensong"?

Author Reply: My goodness, you read this stuff more than once - I am greatly flattered!
My writing muse went on holiday as I tried to deal with designing a new kitchen/ensuite/bathroom and how or whether to pay for it all. No further on the deciding bit and Gimli is sorta hammering on my eardrum demanding I let him out of the library in Minas Tirith. So hopefully soon a new chapter will appear. (starting again is hard, but I will try)

Your story was interesting, and I find myself feeling pity for Minuial, which is unusual as I normally hate women who are sort of... b_____??...
She is very resolute and stubborn, but you manage to make her seem real and not a MS. I enjoyed the plot and characterizations, but I wonder if you could make some of the human characters a bit less... stereotypical?

Will there be a sequel?

Author Reply: Thank you, it was lovely to get back from holiday to find a review. I am glad you enjoyed my story. As for a sequel, some plot bunnies are hopping about, but I will have to see, Adagio and Cadenza both took more than a year - It is a big commitment.
I would really like it if you could be a little clearer in your request for not so stereotyped characters - What sort of thing would you like to see/read? Always willing to improve my storytelling.

RS, you know I loved this story, but honestly, this has to be my favorite chapter, all because of the conversation between Gimli and Minuial! Minuial has certainly grown as a character from the arrogant Warden in the beginning. She might be uncomfortable (I'd say she's definitely out of her comfort zone), but she is a better person without all that bigotry weighing her down. It takes a big person to admit a mistake of the magnitude she had made with Gimli, and I like her all the more for doing so. And Gimli....bless his sweet heart...to encourage her, to tell her she has eternity to work on Legolas! Awwwwww, he is just the best friend, and now she can appreciate why! (Now, to work on Thranduil's attitude....Gimli, a pet...a hobby? I'll hope he's not as hardened as Minuial thinks he is....).

Continued to giggle at the twins looking over their shoulders and expecting the REVENGE OF THRANDUIL to fall on them at any time. LOL That was great!

I'm glad Arwen has found some peace of mind (even if RealLife if not at all peaceful for her!) (And I'm glad Throndar was given a funeral worthy of the warrior he was...forgot to include that in review for ch. 19. Sorry! CRC strikes every 10 minutes in my household!)

So, Edoras is being rebuilt...Arwen and Aragorn head for hearth and home... Gimli is on the mend, and still arguing with Legolas...Adar is staying in Ithilien for awhile (that'll be fun! :-) )...the twins will hopefully get Tolman to Imladris this time...and that bird winging away at the end was just the right touch for an ending. I hope you know, mellon nin, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading "Cadenza", and I'll be checking regularly for anything new from you in the future. :-)

Author Reply: Ah, Linda, how I am going to miss your cheery voice. Thank you, thank you so much for all your support and the enjoyment you have taken from this tale. I am glad you think I tied up most of the loose ends, finishing it has left a huge sad hole in my life.
I will just have to wait and see if the muses will come up with any more ideas for my characters.
All my love

Oh dear...poor Gimli! Twenty...no, fifty masons chiseling and hammering in his poor head? Gave me a headache just thinking about it! What a descriptive metaphor...ouch! I was glad to see him in the care of Tolman - he is such a neat Hobbit! I've really appreciated his character's warmth and caring - he reminds me of an old-fashioned country doctor...always willing to travel to help his patients. I don't think they make those anymore. :-( And friend Legolas is applying his healing talents, too. Well, it stands to reason he would have some...just not as developed as a trained healer. Given Gimli's injuries, I wouldn't want to be the one to try and keep him (Legolas) from helping heal and support the dwarf. (Elven life support, eh?)

So the twins are on Thranduil's bad list, are they? I would be interested in what little (or big) trick they played...and judging from Minuial's reaction to seeing them, it affected more than one woodland elf! LOL I won't say poor Minuial...but poor Minuial! Waking up with no Legolas in sight...she knew he had been around, but now he is not!

My dear Legolas! Not a romantic bone in his body...LOL! Truer words were never spoken; the elf needs some instruction here! :-) Must be a guy thing - wonderfully handsome (uh, let's be accurate here...beautiful!), kind, loyal, courageous, and absolutely, totally oblivious! Maybe he hasn't had a chance to notice...we'll give him the benefit of the doubt. ;)

I loved the interlude with Gleowyn meeting up with Legolas on the hilltop...and I totally agree with her. The world is much more beautiful for the elves being a part of it! Great chapter, RS!

Author Reply: Thank you Linda, your wonderful reviews make writing this so much fun. I guess I just see Leggy as such a guy - interested in his sports and mates (archery and mortals, sorry) and putting anything icky like emotions in a little compartment, hence that semi-formal relationship with Min, nice safe rules and no committment.
Perhaps I'll be nicer to him in another fic, we'll see. I love him really, and all my other OC's and canon characters

You so have a talent for plotting. You know, Rose - I love how you always have Tom talking to his horse.

King Elfwine was not a happy man. Nineteen dwarves killed and the Lord of Ithilien hanging between life and death in the care of his great friend, Gimli, and all on Edoras’ doorstep, so to speak.

I guess he wasn't happy, now was he. I love seeing that kind of stuff in the middle of grimness. Now give 'em all German names and send this off to an agent.

Author Reply: Well that made me laugh out loud! Hah, the answer is German names! love it. I might even try it. But do you realise this tome has about 60 non-canon OF names already, not to mention about thirty canon and original place names - cripes, that's a lot of German.
While I wait for the muses to strike again I might use search/replace and see if the 80000 word beomoth Adagio/Mayflies/Cadenza flies. A fantasy book, oh my.
Thanks for the idea, and the review!
Still chuckling

I just loved the picture of Minuial sitting there in the dark, glow muted, tossing and catching the silver dagger - and Gimli watching her. Well - Minuial and Gimli as friends, ganging up on the unromantic beautiful elf! What fun that could be.

I loved the twins - scared to death that Thranduil's hit squad were after them.

Arwen fighting off sadness - the Rohan party - Tolman - spookily alien Thranduil (very elfy).

In fact, I loved it all. More. Please.

Author Reply: Sorry Bodkin, this is the end of this story, I will see if the muses grace me with anothe tale soon, in the meantime keep up the good work yourself, I do enjoy your stories.

LOL. Thranduil is scary and the twins know it. But Minuial is gaining some respect for their daring and that's good too.

It's interesting that Thranduil sees Legolas's dealings with mortals as destroying him. I suppose he must fear that Legolas is leaving the things he should be doing for people who will only die in a shockingly short time. And actually, he is.

I liked the image of Minuial sitting in Gimli's tent in the dark tossing the dagger in silence. It seemed very elfy.

It's touching that Arwen thinks that "hope had always been her watchword."

Author Reply: Thank you so much daw, your support since I have been postin on SA has been just wonderful and has been integrel to the finishing of this year long project.
Glad you enjoyed the ride.

A really great ending to a wonderful story. I am still holding out hope that Legolas and his father's March Warden will make a go of it. I enjoyed her very slow awakening to the fact that elves were not the only race who had many things "good" to offer even if they are mortal. :)

Author Reply: Thank you Sassey, it is hard to finish a work that has taken up my whole imagination for such a long time. We will see if the characters have anything else to tell me. I hope so!
