The Trial of Frodo Baggins  by Gentle Hobbit 22 Review(s)
daw the minstrelReviewed Chapter: 13 on 9/18/2003
Great concluding chapter (and an epilogue to look forward to!). I like the fact that Frodo can pass his healing on to another. That seems right.

Author Reply: It seemed right to me too, and completely in character for Frodo, I think. And it is that contrast - between the depressed and completely self-absorbed Frodo, and the healing, outward-looking, more "normal" (but with new understanding) Frodo that I wanted to also highlight.

I am glad that Frodo chose Merry - not entirely sure I could articulate why, but it seemed fitting. Perhaps it is because Merry had been injured by Shadow physically as well.

I think it is fun that Sam was miffed at Aragorn, but I like that Frodo told him to let it go. That is a good sign that he has. Very nice. Glad Frodo went and spoke to the injured captain. Helping others is extremely good therapy. Glad for an epilogue, and then I do hope you will write something else.

Author Reply: I was rather fond of the miffed Sam, myself. But he's too honest a hobbit to completely gloss over Frodo's faults...

I'm working on that epilogue, but it's being very stubborn at the moment. Grr.

This is a wonderful story. Aragorn's judgement made me squirm, for I am often guilty of pride myself. I hope you update soon.

Author Reply: So am I! But that sin is closely linked with perfectionism too, which can be very depressing. Always wanting to be perfect, but never making it...

At last! New chapters are up. I'm so glad. I really like this story. I feel so sorry for Frodo, but Aragorn is right. A lot of Frodo's overwhelming grief and guilt come from pride. I look forward to reading more of this great story.

Author Reply: Thank you! Glad you liked the judgement. Perhaps it is time for Frodo also to excercise the quality of mercy... towards himself.

This was wonderful - I like that Aragorn saw his pride and gently pointed it out to him. Wow. Wonderful. His true crime has been pointed out and he can move past it - and it was done so lovingly, so kindly.

Author Reply: I'm not sure whether the hobbits (especially Sam) felt that Aragorn was being particularly gentle! But I think he was, and I'm glad you picked up on that. Thanks!

Another fabulous chapter. The fact that Aragorn finds Frodo guilty of pride surprises Frodo because he is not ready for it. He has not claimed it for himself. So he really does feel the judgment. I am struck again by how you convey feelings and angst through actions and words. Just great.

Author Reply: He certainly feels it! Of all the things Aragorn could have said, that was the thing Frodo least expected...

"I am struck again by how you convey feelings and angst through actions and words." Thank you! I try hard to "show", and not "tell." Thank you for telling me that I do just that.

No! It's not finished, is it? You can't stop here, you wouldn't! Hurry, hurry, I want to see what Aragorn's judgment will be, I want to rest of the story!
This is marvelous, just marvelous. This is the Frodo I love so dearly.

Author Reply: No, not finished yet! Chapter 12 is now up, and there will be probably two more chapters (or one long one) yet to go...
"This is the Frodo I love so dearly." Ah, wonderful! It is always such a pleasure when readers find a character to be written true to their own vision of him or her. Thank you for telling me that "my" Frodo does that for you.

I haven't finished it yet, Gentle Hobbit, but I had to stop a moment just to say -- oh, this is good! Aragorn's meeting with Frodo in the throne room, making him say who else in the Fellowship could have been trusted with the Ring -- wonderful! And I'm dying to see how Fellen fits into the story. Must get back to it --

Author Reply: It has been almost a year since you left this review -- and yet somehow I missed it until now. I'm sorry! I have enjoyed all your stories so much that I feel compelled to respond even though, for all I know, you don't even use this email address anymore.

Thank you for your review. I have written several other fics since then, but this one remains my favourite. I am so glad that you enjoyed it.

I've been reading along here, enjoying this, but this chapter was so good I had to stop and review. Your portrayal of Aragorn is absolutely wonderful, as he finds it in himself to be an honest and just judge, and thus an honest and just king. Marvelous. This story is so well written.
