Leave Us Not in Darkness  by Zimraphel 8 Review(s)

"“Legolas, I have not the power to undo the hurt done by Saruman; not even the Valar can undo such wounds. Nor can they or I reverse the order of things. Yes, eventually this child will leave its mother’s womb. It will be born. There is no power that can change that.”"

Uh, actually, there is. Pennyroyal supposedly works rather well, but there are other herbs, too. Granted, it would still come out, but it would not be born, in the strict sense, and it likely would not cause as much damage on the way.

Not granting her the mercy of an abortion, but rather killing her (and the unborn with her) is such a forced-birther logic, I feel really appalled by it.

It is the stance that Tolkien as Catholic would probably have taken, so it may be considered closer to canon than any that prioritizes the wellbeing of a woman, but still.

I hope you did not intend to promote such ideas, but if not for the fact that Elves are known to never, ever survive rape, this would be almost exactly the same as the way misogynist governments all over the world murder women ... just a bit better, because at least Legolas and Aragorn killed her quickly.

That it is Legolas who comes up with the idea of ending the pregnancy makes it seem like there was a chance she could have survived and healed from this if the pregnancy was ended; he is an Elf, he would know. And that is what makes it so much like real-life violence against women.

Such a beutyful and sad story, it moves me to tears and I felt it double since I have a friend who in her youth suffered the elfwomans fate in all but the part of death luckily.Shes alive and well with her own lovely family and I thank God for it though her lifestruggles has been many since then.Wellwritten and a subject that never goes out of "fashion"unfortunately since rapes are common among other hidious acts one can do to another.Good you write about it so we can take a gathered stand against rape etc!

what a moving story. i felt the grief legolas experienced, and was as relieved for having aragorn there. great insight into death and immortal life. your characters rang true throughout. i could see each of the characters behaving in these ways. terrific writing. i look forward to reading more of your writing.

An interesting story that highlights some of the down sides to being an immortal elf and the depth of Saruman's corruption. The touch you used with the characters was deft and I stand in particular appreciation of your handing of Legolas.

Oh my, this is a wonderful story! Your first chapter has me hooked; I look forward to more, if indeed there is more. If not, I look forward to more of your works. ~Lily

This packed a powerful punch, it was a moving look into both the Elvish beliefs on life and death, the friendship between Legolas and Aragorn.

One little nitpick, I understand 'gwador' to imply 'brother' more than 'friend', it works well in this fic either way.

Beautiful work, I'll look for more of the same from you in the future ^_^

I really enjoyed this story. It was very well written, and well thought out. I liked the way the Elvish beliefs about life and death featured so strongly in this story, it was a marvelous glimpse into the way the think. Very well done indeed. :)

This is the second time I have read this, and the impact has not lessened. That is a rare thing--to reread a story and have it still carry the same visceral punch is quite an achievement.
