Wide Awake In The Present  by The Karenator 6 Review(s)

Ok, that made me just bawl like a baby. Really well done.

My spirit is unnaturally quiet...And yet, despite my confusion, nothing in my life seems more important to me than this very moment; nor do I feel prepared for it.

What a great description!

But this is where I lost it: For a moment I wish Faramir to be at my side. He would have been far more ready to understand or offer some sort of logical explanation for this place and this woman. But, he does not belong here. This is something that belongs only to me and in truth, I am not certain I wish to share it. I feel a faint nagging in the back of my mind as if there are other concerns I should be attending, but I have no will to seek them out or to even acknowledge them. Serenity subdues the worries...

Really powerful!

I loved this one too. I really didn't know you had all these. I swear I looked at your author page before and I only remember Serious Trouble but this was obviously here first. Well I'm glad I looked again.

Author Reply: What a surprise to get reviews on such old stories.

I'm so pleased that you liked Boromir's journey. I like the old boy, and I simply wanted him to find peace. Despite the ring's influence, he had a good heart and wanted only to help his people. He deserved peace in the company of the one he loved.

Now...I say all this knowing that Tolkien didn't tell us what the fate of man was when he passed from the circles of Arda...and technically, neither did I. :>)

Thanks you, Elliska. I'm thrilled to hear from you.

Goodness gracious. This was your first fan fiction story? Whoa. I'm off to read the rest.

Author Reply: Yep, this is my first foray into the wild world of fanfiction. Poor daw, I hear she's still in therapy. I appreciate you taking the time to read it. It's been so long since I wrote this, I had to go back and look over it again to see what it said. I'm thinking that perhaps I should stick to doing laundry, but this fanfiction business is so much fun! Thank you so much for reading and reviewing.

Again, this is lovely. Boromir, the flawed but still good man, is powerfully described and you gave him the gift of peace. I think he deserved that. As I am in the very beginning stages of writing for this site (with nothing yet posted as I need to get "approved" still), you are an inspiration.

Author Reply: Thank you again! I'm so glad that you liked this piece. Boromir was sort of the flawed son of man, but underneath it all, he was a good man who cared for his people and wanted only to help them. He struggled so with his duty to his people, his duty to his father and the insistent call of the ring; I wanted him to find peace. I think he deserved it, too! I said in my last note to you that I was hoping to see your work posted here and this must be where I read about it! I'm shocked that you find me an inspiration, but I'm shamelessly thrilled. Thank you. You have really made my day. Now see, you are an inspiration, too. I look forward to reading your work. This is a good place to be. Welcome! :>) Karen

This is beautifully written. Boromir's peace is wonderfully described, and the meeting with Finduilias equally so. You use words beautifully. I hope you write more.

Author Reply: Nilmandra,
Thank you for your lovely review. I hoped the peaceful nature of the afterlife would come through. When my sister in law was ill, I read a lot about near death experiences and we discussed what we thought would come when we passed over. I drew a great deal on the personal accounts of people who came back to tell their stories. I think it will be a beautiful experience. I wanted Boromir to feel the peace he so richly deserved and to be met by his mother so that the transition would be greatly welcomed. Thank you again.

Wow! Very well done! You left me filled with empathy for Boromir (not to mention a bad case of the sniffles!)

Are you really a new author? Looking forward to reading whatever you share with us in the future.

Thank you!

Author Reply: Thank-you! What a kind review. I just appreciate you reading it! I have been writing for many years and have published poetry, but this is my first attempt at fanfiction. I didn't even know it existed until the last 5 or 6 months. And you can just ask Daw about my insecure newbie status. She's responsible for ironing out the kinks. Parallelism....a whole universe unto itself! Thank-you again, Tolkien Fan.(It gave you the sniffles? Really? I've never been so happy to make someone cry in my life!) Thank-you again for your very kind words.

I am so glad to see this posted. I like the unusual first person, present tense perspective. You do a nice job of teasing us with the mystery of who this is and where he is. Nice clear language and good detail. Welcome to the world of web publishing!

Author Reply: Again, many thanks to you for your help. Without your support and generous technical aid I don't think I would have gotten up the nerve to post. "Nice clear language and good detail"....ah...my favorite line. I've read it several hundred times already. As a matter of fact, I'm thinking of embroidering it on a pillow. I'm sure you've read this story enough to be able to recite lines, but then to actually take the time to review is above and beyond the call of duty. Thanks again.
