A Love of the Halfling's Leaf  by Mirkwoodmaiden 5 Review(s)
FimbrethilReviewed Chapter: 1 on 10/26/2025
Estel’s pov of watching Elrond, Gandalf, and the dwarves. That Thorin is “the regal dwarf”.
“[The shards] vaguely called to him but he did not understand why. Elrond had told him of the tragic story of the shards just recently. These blades were even older than that. His imagination was on fire with possibilities.” Oh they probably would call to him. How much did Elrond tell? Of course Glamdring and Orcrist are older than Narsil. I bet he is not imagining anything close to the real thing.
Aragorn would be precocious.
“Estel sat down next to him and pulled out a spiced berry cake wrapped in some cheesecloth. He broke off a bit and then offered some to Bilbo. Bilbo, being a hobbit, could not resist berry cake and took a small bit. Estel smiled, and encouraged him to take more as he broke off another bit and crammed it in his mouth. Bilbo, not wishing to be impolite of course took a little bit more“ heehee.
“We hobbits have been farming the four farthings of the Shire since time out of mind.” The fact that Estel’s line is MUCH older than the Shire. I guess a royal dynasty is more likely to remember it’s history than some common hobbits, farmers or not. Though aren’t hobbits good recording family trees? And the swords, as mentioned above, are older than both the Shire and Numenor. At least the blades of Gondolin are, and I think Narsil is.
“The Shire? Where is that?” Estel thought about all that Lord Glorfindel had been teaching him and he did not remember any mention of The Shire before. He would have to ask him about it.” Hmmm I am surprised Glorfindel did not tell him about it.
“But why?” Estel asked in all earnest inquiry. He had never seen his Adar or his brothers or any Elf do such a thing or anything close to it.”
Of course. [Thinking of all the stories where Legolas and Arwen have to deal with it.] But actually, her brothers might have learned (tried) when they were really younger. I could see that. If they knew about it.
“The smoke tasted good, much to his astonishment.” heh. I wonder he survives til his 210th birthday. I guess he only does it every so often.
“I do wonder what has brought him here?“ I suppose Bilbo won’t find out for the next 60 some years.

I *love* that Gandalf is one of his favourite people! ("crinkly Wizard", lol!) Wise child, indeed, as is confirmed by He would wait and ask Elladan and Elrohir later.

Aha. Already practising his scouting techniques, I see.

earthy, smoky with a touch of cherry sounds like the pipeweed my dad used to smoke.

Why? A question that too often has no answer – or too many answers all at once.

I am suddenly remembering the scene in Tom Sawyer where the boys have run off to be pirates and they try to smoke for the first time. At least Estel did not turn green and lose his last meal!

I found Glorfindel's sudden sense of well-being and coming home curious. I can't quite make a connection. Does this idea come from one of your other stories?

I thought about it and I really liked the idea of Aragorn and Gandalf meeting when Aragorn was a child, the bond would be that much stronger.

About Glorfindel I think when I was writing this I was tacitly implying that the pipeweed had some Athelas in the mix of pipeweed along with Longbottom Leaf but I never actually wrote that. I should probably re-work that a bit! Thanks for reading in that detail!

Aargh. How does the time fly so fast? Almost midnight already, and I've been reading happily for several hours, and I *still* have not got around to reading this story and the next one below it! And the Elder Cat just brushed by my leg, rather like a cruising shark, and he will probably bite me on his next pass to hurry me on my way to bed. To paraphrase Boromir: One does not simply read fanfic when the Elder Cat thinks it's past bedtime...

I will need to try to read from the bottom of the SoA home page upward tomorrow instead of from the top down. (((hugs)))

Thank you for pointing to The Heir Apparent! I have added that story to my reading list.

I need to get a few things done before I settle down to read today, but I'm looking forward to savouring this story. (It's my reward for knocking out the laundry and dishes and vacuuming...)

That’s funny. I had never thought about Bilbo being the one to introduce Aragorn to pipeweed, but any time at all around the Hobbits and you would certainly be thoroughly intrigued, I’m sure! Thx for sharing!

I thought about it and I think I was watching the Extended Ed. of Hobbit: Unexpected Journey and I thought you know Estel is bright and very inquisitive and when the dwarves came to Rivendell it only made sense that the overly curious Estel would be drawn to Bilbo!

In another story "Bound by Duty; Bound by Joy!" needing re-posting as it was deleted. Merry first intrigues and then shows Faramir how to smoke pipe weed! Those hobbits and their pipeweed!

Thanks again for reading and writing!
