I love drabbles. I love the progression of the drabbles to the realization of what Frodo must do. Of course little Elanor senses what is going to happen. The babes always know.

Author Reply: Thank you, MM! It's difficult to carry forward a "story" in such short snapshots, so I'm glad you felt there was a progression here.

How heartbreaking for Frodo, and for all who will lose him to the West. And yet Elanor knows, somehow....

Author Reply: Indeed! Definitely a more poignant version of "kids say the darndest things"

These are quite simply beautiful - and, wow, do they pack an emotional punch. The image of little Elanor speaking as a sort of prophet into Frodo's life will stick with me for a long time.

I was also struck by the connection you drew between Frodo and Maedhros. There's so much to explore there! There are so many parallels, right down to their encounters with seductively precious and powerful objects that end in fire...but so, so many differences and inversions. Frodo seems to imagine himself as less physically capable, but his greater spiritual strength is clear in the way their respective stories end.

Thanks for your wonderfully written and very thought-provoking piece!

Author Reply: Thank you!! I love love love your thoughts on Maedhros, aslo—I hadn't thought as deeply as you about the contrast between them, and now that you've brought it up, I can't stop thinking about it! Maedhros as a flawed character that a more humble yet more deserving Frodo looks up to as a model of heroism really intrigues me now. Thanks again!

Lovely series. I doubt Elanor would be having such imaginings as yet, but it's delightful to think of! Love the last one in particular.

Author Reply: Thank you very much for reading, Larner!

Oh, my. These paint powerful pictures of Frodo after the Quest.

I find that the Drabble somehow brings out the poetry of the prose. It might have something to do with the necessity of choosing words precisely to convey the maximum impact under the constraints of the form. Thus, such gorgeous turns of phrase as "The room is the pale gray of starlight filtered through clouds" and "wise-owl eyes"...

Even though I anticipated Elanor's concluding thought, it still came as a shock when the words were spoken. Well done, indeed.

Author Reply: Thank you so much!

I definitely agree about drabbles—I notice myself working extra hard to make sure that each word is doing work, that each image is as strong as possible but also as short as possible. Certainly very similar to poetry in that respect!
