Strangers in a Strange Land   by My blue rose 9 Review(s)

This is bit of a add-up review, but where did you find the Adunaic translations or did you translate them yourself? As you can see I, too, love researching Tolkien Legendarium, especially his languages.

Excellent story. I loved the use of Adunaic and Quenya; and the details of seamanship. What a sad fate for Amandil and his followers, though...

In my one very brief glimpse of Amandil seeking to approach Aman I, too, have him released swiftly and without pain or loss of dignity. Although I had him not arriving.

At least the last warning is given, and the Faithful have the chance to escape the island's doom.

Thanks for this glimpse at what might have been.

I loved the use of our Declaration of Independence, most apt for the time at which this has been posted. And there was good reason for the Faithful to believe that it was desirable to leave behind Pharazon's own treason toward the Valar and Iluvatar.

Author Reply: Thank you! I love Amandil's quote in the Silmarillion"For there is but one loyalty from which no Man can be absolved in heart for any cause." this story came to me when I reread those words and thought of how they reflect the ideas in the Declaration of Independence. But it took me a year before I finally finished writing it!

I hate to see the Valar made executioners in such a manner. But they did defy the Ban, no matter how noble the cause.

I agree that the argument between Salmar and Eonwe is inappropriate for the time and place. I find myself loving Amandil here.

This greeting by Eonwe does sound more serious and portentous. I grieve that the Valar would do no more than they did, although they, too, are under constraints.

At least Ulmo appears to support their quest, even if their desires cannot be fulfilled. Love Salmar's appearance.

I feel for the young sailor and his seasickness. Have been there myself, of course, and we weren't far off shore! I'm glad his friend has managed to bring him the ginger.

Interesting story, I have always wondered about Amandil's fate. Though perhaps some stories are best left untold, adds a little bit of mystery don't you think.
Anyway, you've done a good job in staying true to the legendarium, and the research is spot on. It's always good to see someone commiting their time to search for knowledge for such thing as fanfiction, not many would do so.
Your story was a good short read. I'll be looking forward to your new stories.
