The Rise and Fall of Beleriand: A Collection  by Encaitariel 11 Review(s)

Finrod has always been one of my favorite Elves. You do him justice here; he was definitely a far-wandering king...

Author Reply: Thank you, Raksha, for the kind review. Finrod may not be Tolkien's most fully drawn characters, but I believe he is one of the most complexly drawn ones; which is why, I think, so many of us find him so compelling.

'No good could come when those two smiled', indeed.

What a difficult position in which to be--he feels ashamed, but not everyone can or is meant to answer that kind of call... Very interesting look into how this brief point in time affected more than just those who went. Thanks for writing!

Author Reply: PSW - Thank you very much for reading, and for taking the time to review! I'm glad that you enjoyed this little character study.

I wish we didn't tend to lash out when we are in pain, but such is the nature of not only Men but Elves as well, obviously.

Author Reply: Hi, Larner -
Thanks again for reading. I don't think that Elves and Men are really that different psychologically. Besides, Anórel has been through quite a lot by this point, and she doesn't really understand why any of it has been happening. That is a very volitile combination in both Men and Elves.

Good to see families being reunited. I wonder how many found themselves wishing they'd never left Aman.

Author Reply: Larner - Thank you for reading and reviewing! I, too, wonder the same thing; especially considering everything that came of it.

Fascinating conversation. Is this the beginning seed of Gildor's becoming one of the Wandering Companies?

I love the teasing in the beginning, and Gildor's response in the end. Lots of food for thought. I had to read hastily, though, as I am pressed for time, and so I apologise for any nuances or outright things I missed in the reading.

Author Reply: Thanks so much for reading and reviewing, Lindelea. Don't worry about missing nuances, this isn't the most subtle of pieces. ;) And, yes, it is a seed; but one which will have a long germination period.

Thanks, again.

I think that I can appreciate just why Gildor might be thought of in that way by Elros. Although Maedhros did seek for the two lost princes and did not find them.

Author Reply: Hi, Larner-
Hmm, yes. Although, knowing how good a bard Maglor was supposed to have been, who can tell how realistic those stories were. ;) Though to be fair to Gildor, all he knew at the time was that many, many Elves were dead, and it was the fault of the Sons of Fëanor.

Thanks for reading and reviewing!

A good examination of Finrod's character, I find. He is, after all, one of the more favored kings returned from Aman.

Author Reply: Thanks for your kind words, Larner. Finrod is my favorite Elvish king, if you couldn't tell. ;) But he really isn't a king in the mold of Turgon or Thingol or Fingon, is he? At least not that we can tell from what we have of Tolkien's works. And the more I thought about it, the more ways I saw that Finrod had a direct influence on the history of Beleriand. I thought that deserved a bit of exploration.

Again, thanks for reading.

Quite a character study, I must say. And a dragon it took to get her to see how it is that Elves perceive the world?

Author Reply: Larner, thanks so much for reading and reviewing! I'm glad you found it interesting. As for Finduilas... Unfortunately, some people need to hit the proverbial wall; and she seems to be one of them.

I take it that the picture is of a Balrog and a defender of Gondolin. Fascinating.

Grinning at the depth of relationship sketched in this brief scene.

It is always handy to have a scathing word or phrase tucked away in your back pocket.

I love the description of Elrond's artwork. Map? I'm afraid I'm reading too quickly -- to fit this in, in the limited time I have this morning.

And I'm guessing at the identity of the "old friend"...

Author Reply: Thank you very much, Lindelea, for reading, and I'm glad you liked it.

Gildor has definitely learned the use of collecting the odd scathing phrase, spending so many yéni as Lindan's friend as he has. Lindan, however, has never been impressed; he simply tells Gildor to stop being such a pompous Golda.

I imagine Elrond learning many things in Gil-Galad's court, map-making only one of them. I do not imagine him as being one of those scholars who are bad with a pen (in any sense of the phrase).

As far as the "old friend": I really wasn't trying to be that mysterious. ;)
