Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 24 Review(s)

Luke Skywalker and Obi-wan Kenobi? LOL! Now that's a way to look at the Maiar and their swords I hadn't thought of before :D

Ha, I knew it! So they found another Elf or two. Good; it was hinted that there might be more out there, after all, and these two seem to know their names already. That's going to be interesting. And they even revealed themselves to the Mortals? I wonder if they know what the Wiseman Elves know, too.

That pub just fits – I only got only ten days ago back from a holiday in Ireland, so it stirs up fond memories.

These brothers have an interesting history, and it seems my suspicions are correct that they were inspired to go there and join the SCA. But I felt a bit sorry for them, they aren't used to the Valar turning up, and to be confronted with Námo of all the Valar must have been disconcerting, to say the least.

Author Reply: Hi Kitty. We'll learn more about the brothers and their history as the story progresses and even more so in Elf Academy 4.

I've been to many a pub throughout England and Scotland and Wales, though not in Ireland, and modeled it on those, but I imagine the Irish ones are very similar in scope. I prefer them to American bars myself.

Thanks for reviewing. It's much appreciated.

So, new elves and younger elves. I hope we see their parents soon. They sound interesting. Had to laugh at the Batman/Starwars reference. That was too funny. Seems Namo is busy planting small cells to get the preparations for the Dagor Dagorlad started. I wonder how many more there are.

Author Reply: We will meet Gwyn and Gareth's parents eventually, though not immediately, and they are very interesting (at least I think so *grin*). Námo has been one busy little Vala, that's for sure. Being considered one of the Ainur's greatest strategists, along with Oromë, setting up such 'cells' would be in his purview. As to how many more there are, I have no idea and Námo hasn't said. Maybe we'll find out someday. Thanks for reviewing. It's greatly appreciated.

Holy Lightsabers, it's The Tart With The Cart, The Dish With The Fish.....there are a few more nicknames for Molly.

The Best Irish Stew and brown bread i ever ate was in Kilkenny. Darn good local ale too. Now I want to go back to Ireland.

A very enjoyable chapter (well, they all are) Can't wait to see what happens next. And how the Valinoreans eventually react to more local elves...hah! They might be outnumbered before long. Because seriously, someone needs to remind some of them they are not in Valinor anymore. And respect is earned, not gifted.

Author Reply: I'm sure there are *many* nicknames for Molly. LOL! I've never been to Ireland though that's on my list of places to visit before I die. Whether I'll ever get there is another thing.

I'm glad you found the chapter enjoyable. We'll be staying with the Twins and Serindë for a bit longer before we go back to Wiseman to see what Glorfindel et al are up to. And you're right that respect, unlike love, is earned and not a given.

Thanks for leaving a review, ainisarie. I appreciate it very much.

She shoots! she scores! oh wait it bounced back out cause she didn't think he was an elf after she was so sure he was....dang it. But I am glad I was not able to guess for sure what Gwyn's race was. :)

Go Serinde! Glad she stood up for herself and told them to count her in on it also. Loved Elrohir's quip about "Elrohir of Imaladris is a good SCA name?" We poor mortals are constantly being freaked out with Maia popping in and out. Kind of wonder what is going to happen when someone has a heart attack... ;)

Gareth sounds like someone Nel and the Amigos will enjoy being around. Young, yet knowledgeable with the new world. ;)

Author Reply: Hi Laer. Always go with your first, instinctive guess, or at least that's what they used to tell us about taking multiple-guess exams. LOL!

Anyway, Serindë isn't the wallflower or wife-to-be-ornament people think she is. And if anyone were to have a heart attack with Maiar popping in and out, I'm sure said Maiar would be more than capable of performing CPR. *grin*

And I have no doubt that Nell and the Amigos would enjoy meeting both Gareth and Gwyn and we will see that happening later.

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

Well that did not turn out as I expected.
Yes, I'm still perusing while writing up Elf Academy review. Bad me!

Honestly, I thought, with the way the 'Maiar' had taken over Elladan, that it was an Umaiar. After all, no matter the circumstances, it was possession and THAT is taking away free will. I don't recall any maiar saying, 'hey, let me take you over for a bit' and Dan saying 'yes' in your typescript. And while the maia may have *said* he had permission, I personally would flog his backside if he tried that with me. Just my take on it. :)

Like everyone else, I'm laughing over the Star Wars lines; and for the record, it was Burt Ward who portrayed Robin, while Adam West was Batman. Yup, 60 year old geek here. LOL

The interplay between the elves is very cautious; both sides I think. And part of me just wonders what the hapless mortals are making of all this. *laughs*

Author Reply: Hi MikoNoNyte. Well, Elladan did give his permission, however implicit, and no lasting harm came to him. It's a thin line, and it's not something the Valar would countenance lightly. I suspect Manwë even consulted Eru on the matter first.

Thanks for the clearing up as to who played who. I remember watching the show but I'm lousy with names. *grin*

You're right that there is caution on both sides and I'm sure the Mortals were hanging onto every word and enjoying the show. *grin*

Thanks for taking the time to review. It's much appreciated.

Interesting that you should pick the name of Molly Malone's for a restaurant. There is in fact one in Wellington, New Zealand which serves the most delicious Irish stew I have ever eaten. Nothing in the states comes close. Which I could get their recipe.

Author Reply: Hi Tari. Never been to New Zealand, but I would love to go there someday. I chose "Molly Malone" as being as Irish as you can get when I decided to have them all meet in an Irish pub but didn't want them to be traveling all the way across the city of Fairbanks to the Big I. Anyway, thanks for commenting. It's appreciated.

I love the way elves talk about the past as if it were yesterday. I do wish the twins had given a little more info about themselves to the brothers, but their wariness is to be expected I suppose given all they have endured and the way the full bloods treated them in Wiseman. I like these new brothers. They are so cool. One of my all-time favorite lines is that exclamation mixing Star Wars and Batman. I laugh out loud every time I read it. This is such an amazing and enjoyable chapter. It is one of my favorites. Keep up the amazing work!

Author Reply: Hi Ellie. I think you're right about the Twins being wary, not only because of the way they've been treated by other full-blooded Elves, but also because, as Roy keeps reminding Sarah, they're at war and one has to be careful in times of war. Still, I think they like what they see in Gwyn and Gareth and these two, having had no contact with other Elves, other than their parents, probably don't care what the Twins' heritage is; they finally get to meet others of their kind.

I think the Batman/Star Wars line will be a favorite with everyone for some time to come. *grin*

Thanks for taking a moment to review. You know how much I appreciate it.

Oh, I LOVE this! You do know this would be a dream come true for most SCAdians!

And now I've got this ear-worm running through my head...

Oh, the bombs went up, and the crunch came down, in the middle of the Pennsic War.
It left us stranded in Cooper's field, ten thousand souls and more.
We had nothing with us but what we'd brought: our cars and our camping gear
And our arms and armor, tools and skills, that we'd worked on all that year.

Chorus:
So dress your ranks, lift your pikes,
Tight as the teeth of a comb.
Rattling, clanking, down the road,
The War is going home...
(Leslie Fish is a genius.)

I'm going to have to see if I can find my old cassette of "Serious Steel"

I also love Serinde's delight that she's no longer the "baby"!

This. Is. So. Much. Fun.

Author Reply: Hi Dreamflower. Oh,yes. Definitely. LOL!

Leslie Fish is indeed a genius. I probably won't make it to Pennsic this year but I think I'll try for next year, though I wouldn't be able to stay for the whole two weeks. Back in the day when I first joined, it was held on a single weekend. Times do change.

I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it very much.

Good morning, meldonya!

The semester is over and I have a week before classes start up again so I was able to get caught up on the chapters I've missed while struggling with Intermediate Accounting II and Accounting Information Systems classes. I just loved it when the Twins and Serindë were led to the SCA and found more Elves. The Holy Batman line was priceless (I freely admit that I'm still a fan of the Adam West/Burt Ward show from the 60s). I also can't wait to meet Gwyn and Gareth's parents. Their dad, Tristan, sounds like he would have gotten along great with my Dad and Grandpa.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this story and look forward to what happens next. I also agree that Alex and Derek would have a ball in the SCA. I've been a member since 1979, though I'm on hiatus from doing events until I get my degree this December. In fact, my pen name I use to review is my SCA name.

See you (virtually) on Friday morning! I can't wait to see what happens next.

Edlyn

Author Reply: Hi Edlyn. Good to hear from you again. I'm glad you're enjoying this story and got a kick out of this chapter particularly. It was fun to write. Tristan is a hoot and his wife Iseult is something else altogether. I'm sure you'll enjoy meeting them when they show up.

Good luck with your studies and thanks for taking the time to leave a review. It's much appreciated.

Holy lightsabers, Batman. It’s Luke Skywalker and Obi-wan Kenobi

I know a lot of people have already highlighted this, so let me join the crowd. Laughed out loud when I read this, and remembered fondly the hokey television show with Burt Ward and (I forget who played Robin). ("Holy hand grenade, Batman, it's Monty Python!" -- no, not really, I just think of a friend saying that, the first time we watched M.P. and the Holy Grail.)

I kind of suspected Elves were involved, especially the head honcho and maybe more. I wonder how many other SCA chapters and other re-enactors are providing amusement ("children playing dress-up"!) for yet-unfound Elves...? (Not lost, though. Nate knows where they all are. (I almost said "where the bodies are buried", a nice little cliche that really fits him well, but not really applicable here.)

Author Reply: Hi Lindelea. I can't remember who played Robin either but it was always fun to see what he would say next in a given situation.

There may quite a few Elves running around in such groups as the SCA, providing amusement. You never know. And Námo indeed knows where all the bodies are buried (and even those that are not).

Thanks for leaving a comment. It's much appreciated.
