The Wizard and the Goatherd  by MP brennan 9 Review(s)

Oh my, this is wonderful! Richly evocative, really terrific details and a mystery! And Gandalf is portrayed so perfectly, using his powers subtly, searching so intently and of course the way he seems to always interact with children--making a mess of things at the same time he is charming them and being charmed by them. I certainly hope we get to read the rest of this tale sometime, both the back story and the rest of the adventure. Thanks for this!

Author Reply: Thanks for the wonderful review! I'm glad you liked my Gandalf portrayal; this was my first time writing anything from his POV. I don't know if I'll ever write more about Gandalf's journey, but Aragorn's perspective appears in my stories "Ransom" and "Strangers."

Love, Love, Love this! The "magic trick" part was one that I really enjoyed! And I giggled at the little side note regarding the elleth who sketched the picture of a young Aragorn -- "who swore that her feelings for Estel were purely familial and would acknowledge no evidence to the contrary. " -- "his expression free of care and almost enraptured.." --- LOVE IT! (maybe someday we'll see a story on how that sketch came about?)

Keep it up, my friend! It so exciting to see another story posted by you.

PS - I hope you did well on your finals.

How wonderful a visit with Aragorn's little friend. How well he knows the mortal he's searching for, and how well he figures out at least part of what is going on here.

Nice to see Gandalf's POV as he follows Aragorn's traces. The picture she made must have been heartbreaking.

Author Reply: Thanks for the lovely review! I'm so glad you liked Gandalf's POV. He's tricky, but a lot of fun to write.

Ohhh, I knew that I liked Hakim's little sister! Even when Gandalf uncharacteristically SHOOK her, she stood her ground. She had enough mental power and curiosity to give him a very good picture of Aragorn, and not be afraid of the magic which produced it. And, I am very sure that neither her mother or her father will ever hear from HER about the magical stranger. Although, she might one day tell Hakim! I have another chapter for these chronicles for you. After the grown-up Hakim goes to Gondor to rescue his captive son, and he has that for old times sake luncheon with "King Elessar", perhaps he might have a chance to meet Gandalf. He could bear greetings from a wandering Wizard back to a grown-up very remarkable lady. I very much enjoyed watching Gandalf slip into the house, sans boots ala his Hobbit friends, following the subtle voice of a smaller, less powerful Elven ring. It is a nice touch that the odor of the athelas which Aragorn used to treat the injured little sister smelled to Gandalf like the air of Valinor. It was said to appeal to each person like something comforting from their own life. I will very gladly read anything more that you write about these people and their world. I might even review some more!

Author Reply: Thank you for the wonderful review! I'm so glad you liked little Kalima; she's become one of my favorite OCs. All the characters are still running around in my head, so I might write more about them, possibly including a Post-Ring War story. We'll see where the muses lead.

I have not yet read the other tales, though I've glanced at a chapter or two and put them on my "want to read when I have a little time" list. However, this stands nicely -- there's enough detail that one can read it and understand something of the context, and the story itself draws the imagination. (And now I really do hope for more reading time when summer begins...)

Thanks!

She looked up at Gandalf, her face full of hope. “But, you came. You’re going to help him, aren’t you?”

That's a lovely gap filler for your story.
