She Walks in Beauty  by nrink 3 Review(s)

I certainly didn't have time for reading fanfiction, I was only looking for different ways to write the beginning of one, but your writing style caught me. Lovely, lovely, lovely!! The way you put words together to make new ones (time-dimmed, rose-domed) and the way you, instead of writing looong elaborate descriptions of everything you see, just find these few details that gives away the feeling of the whole scene - it's exactly what I love with Tolkien, and exactly what I try to do myself, and you do it so well!

I like that the world I glimpse in this fic feels so real, even though there's not much I can see. You mention a dark smoky hearth and bleached tapestries, and at least to me, it's that sooty and worn-down side of things that makes medieval stories come alive. We don't get that much of it in Lord of the Rings because things are often described as splendid and magnificient, but I've always been drawn to the dirtier part of the Middle Ages. I have no idea if you do, maybe I put too much in this, but that was the feeling I got from reading this^^

Sorry for writing a review that's almost longer than the fic itself, but this fic brought me so much. I also like the theme, by the way, and I think you captured the feeling of how it must be to leave your home maybe forever for a man who have barely met perfetctly. Most of all, though, this is inspiration.

I'm excited to read more from you, so keep writing! You're awesome :)

Thanks for your very kind review! I'm glad you found a sense of reality in my fic and that you enjoyed it. It sounds like we strive for the same thing :) The compound words that I used are inspired by kennings (I think!), a literary device that appears in Anglo Saxon poetry. Not that I've actually read them, but I'm a huge fan of Rosemary Sutcliff's historical fiction, picked them up from her work and made up my own.

Good luck with your fic, and I hope you found your inspiration!

A fitting parting for she who will be the Steward's beloved Lady!

This is exquisitely written. What a beautiful, emotion-filled peace, full of the bittersweet joy that would be a natural part of such a moment.
