Horatio's Philosophy  by Thundera Tiger 7 Review(s)

Great gapfiller. The messenger coming to the dwarves is such a small note in LOTR. Your tale makes it come to life. The three kingdoms are really in a bind. No matter what they do, there is no safety. They can betray Bilbo, but that is no guarantee for a favorable outcome. Even if the elves would not go against Dol Guldur, it would not guarantee the survival against the threat of Mordor. There are no good choices. Your story made that abundantly clear.

Very pleased to see a new story from you! I really like the way this was paced, excellent characterization also. Sauron is moving everyone around on his chessboard, playing all sides against each other. Soon he'll find out all about hobbits! Loved the wife's going-away gift; if nothing else maybe Gloin can brain an orc with the thing. You can never have too many iron pointy things when you're on a quest of this sort!

Author Reply: Thank you so much for the review! And I'm in complete agreement that the more pointy things, the better! :) I think the dwarves back that philosophy, too. Anyway, I'm so glad you enjoyed the idea that Sauron is acting like a true mastermind in pitting friend against friend and cutting them off from everyone else. He really did have a good thing going until Gollum dumped the Ring into a sea of lava. Bad choice. Thank you again!

Like one of your reviewers said, you haven't lost your touch. I'm glad that you are still writing and it is amazing, as usual. Thanks for this wonderful tale and will waiting for more.

Author Reply: You're very welcome, and thank you so much for your review! I'm so glad you enjoyed this story!

Nice job on this. I've always had interest in the war in the east and with the exception of Soledad's excellent long story I haven't seen many tales in this area. yours is a nice fill-in on this important but underserved part of JRRT's world. Thanks for your obvious effort on this story, hoping that it won't take quite so long for you to post something else.

Author Reply: Well, I'm not as eastern as Soledad, but I definitely like the dwarven realms. This story almost made it out to the Iron Hills, but it just didn't come together. Erebor was as east as it was going to get. Still, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for your review!

I love this examination of how the Dwarves and their allies reacted to Mordor's demands for information on Bilbo and that "least of rings, a mere trifle" Sauron was said to fancy. And I do love the lantern shield--certainly it would be a guard against the possible actions of the Nazgul.

What a terrible choice to face--the threat of Mordor in return for the betrayal of Bilbo and the Shire! No wonder the three realms were all in emotional turmoil!

Author Reply: Thank you so much for your review! Glad you liked the lantern shield. I thoroughly enjoyed the idea, even if I did wonder at its practicality. Maybe Gloin will have to put it to the test.

As for the threat of Mordor to dwarven and mannish lands...they really were in a pickle. The elves backed out, Rhun set up shop, and no one was quite sure who they could continue to trust. It must have been a very stressful time to be a ruler!

Thundera,

It has been a very long time since I've been on this site or since I've read any LotR fanfiction. But your name remained buried in the back of my mind, and I am very pleased that your stories are even better than I remembered. You always have a unique perspective. Thank you for writing a bit about the dwarves. I think they get left behind as us fans focus on shall we say certain more attractive characters. Keep writing (though I well know how RL likes to come in and make free time go to smash!)

PS- I LOVED how you included lines from Shakespeare. I am a big fan.

Author Reply: Thank you so much for your review! And it's my honor to write about the dwarves. They're a layered little group with so many secrets and facets. It's so much fun to try and pull the loose ends together and figure out their culture.

As for Shakespeare...I really don't know how that worked itself in. But for some reason, either Horatio reminds me of a dwarf or the dwarves remind me of Horatio. I'm not sure which anymore. Under-utilized, under-appreciated, and under-estimated. :) I love them all!

You may not have been posting, but you certainly have not lost your touch. This is excellent work. I nearly shivered in two places. Thank you so much.

Author Reply: Thanks for the review! I'm glad there was enough bite in this story to cause some shivers. It was meant to be edgy in several places. Thanks again!
