And Sauron corrupted even the very trees? Alas for those who refused to come away north to the safety of Thranduil's new cavern system. Author Reply: As I said in the notes to the story, I was inspired by the description in FotR that says the trees of Southern Mirkwood were twisted and blackened. It also brought to mind how the pine forest in Dorthonion became so dreadful when Sauron dwelt there. And yes, we have much evidence that Silvan Elves are faithful to their lands sometimes even beyond reason. (If a Vala couldn't coax them away, what could a Sinda do?) It's a grim tale indeed, but I'm glad you still enjoyed it. (Or did you?) Well, regardless, thank you for your comments. I highly appreciate it. :) Rey

A tragic and sad story, beautifully written. The thoughts and terror of the child were very realistic and I was glad it was Legolas who carried him to savety. Pandora Author Reply: Thank you for the compliments! And thank you for dropping by in the first place. -- I am glad the story worked... I was afraid it would be confusing, given the somewhat different terms and point of view. It wasn't easy to write, not least because I had never ventured into this place and time... As for Legolas, he has always been a warrior in my mind long before LotR, so it just made sense to me to put him into one of the patrol groups. He was just accidentally one of the warriors nearby, actually; but I appreciate your liking his participation in this grim event. Rey
