Through all the Changing Scenes of Life  by Linda Hoyland 11 Review(s)

Poor Roheryn - and poor Aragorn! This one had me sobbing - i know how it feels to lose a beloved animal, although I've never owned a horse. But I love the fact that Roheryn remained frisky and left his master with a gift. Life goes on, and this little one will help to heal the grief.

Beautiful, Linda.

A touching story. The death of an cherished animal, be it horse or dog or cat, often resonates not only with the animal's role in our lives, but with the experiences we shared with him or her at different times. Aragorn's relationship with Roheryn is no different, and it is brought to life and through death beautifully in this tale.

The rangers' admiration for the great horse as part of Elessar's legend is a nice touch. And of course I loved the ending; with Roheryn's having left his bereaved master a final, joyful legacy.

Linda - I can't believe I hadn't seen this before. What a delightful story. I love the old horse, and the new foal is perfect and will see Aragorn on many adventures again. Fun, fun, fun!

Linda, that was a most touching and moving story. It was by far my Teitho favourite and got my vote for 1st place.

You gave us a very vivid portrayal of how Aragorn must have felt when he had to say goodbye to Roheryn. The ending was very insightful, and hopeful too. A lovely ending for a most lovely story.

Very lovely and touching, Linda, especially the end, when we (and Aragorn) find out about Rana. :)

That is the way with life--old friends go, and new friends arrive, even four-legged ones! And trust Roheryn to leave such a gift for his long-time master!

Oh my! Heartbreaking indeed, and a little too close for comfort for me yet. I probably should have waited a while to read it...but I couldn't stop. You handled this so delicately, and truthfully, from my own experience.

You see, I lost my beloved mare on Christmas Day - she was fine Christmas Eve, and the next day she'd gone down in the back of the pasture and couldn't rise...I was with her through it all, tears streaming down my face(as they are right now), not caring if anyone saw me. We buried her right where she lay. Aragorn's reaction is very real to me, as you could have been writing about my last few hours with my girl. The only difference was that she was in a lot of discomfort, so we had the Vet out to ease her passing, but there was no doubt that we were losing her.

Even the sentiment in your opening sentence that "Aragorn had always known this day would come..." rings true. My gal was 35...and I'd been trying to brace myself for the day for the last 10 years. Didn't do any good, but I tried.

Love this, even if I am crying!! (That's just part of the healing. As Gandalf said, "...not all tears are an evil.")

Author Reply: Many thanks for your much appreciated review, which I was very moved by.I'm so very sorry to hear about the loss of your horse. I'm sure she was as special as Roheryn.I fear I don't know much about horses, though I very much like them and I was thinking of my aging cats when I wrote.

an old lullaby that his mother had often sung him to sleep with. He had sung on his travels many times to remind him of home and those he loved.

What a beautiful, tender story, and a farewell I'd not thought of before.
