On the Shores of a Turquoise Lake  by Virtuella 8 Review(s)

"And maybe there can find a land where both our hearts can rest."

It does sound as if the Ents and the Entwives might do so here, by the shores of this turquoise lake. I would love to see Fimbrethil and Fangorn together again, I know! And it does sound a beautiful place!

Author Reply: Thank you! I vaguely had a Central Asian/sub-Himalayan setting in mind.

Wonderful descriptions in this. Great you found the Entwives - I like happy endings so I will imagine at least a few of them got back together.LBJ

Wonderful, bitter-sweet, lovely tale. I hope the ents will join to their ladies. Beautifully written.

Virtuella, this story is simply marvellous. Not too many people take on the Entwives, and when they do, I normally see it in the context of "Oh, here's a Fourth Age Questy Epic; what loose ends did Tolkien leave?" I've never seen anyone take it on from the perspective of those whose perspective ought to be taken the most. I loved the way you described the Entwives' method of agriculture, and how this mellowing enabled the possibilities of reconciliation at the end (and just possibilities, too!). And I loved how you framed the larger story of reconciliation within the intensely personal tale of Elderberry and Hawthorn.

This was really a delight to read; thank you!

I wonder about Entish agriculture (and have deliberately glossed it over in this tale), because I gather from Tolkien that Ents live exclusively on their Ent draughts, so what use have they for agriculture?

So the king’s men were sent back bearing this message: that the Entwives were alive and well and awaiting the Ents in a country so beautiful and abundant, so wild and vigorous that it could be home for all of them. There was clear water and clear sky, there were lush forests and sweet meadows. There were Entings, and more, perhaps, to come.

This is a lovely story. Thank you for finding the Entwives!

What a beautifully written history for the Entwives - I would like to think the Ents decide that at least one or two might venture forth to visit their wives of old.

Author Reply: Who knows? They may or may not. Thanks for reviewing. :)
