The Wizard and the Ranger  by Gandalfs apprentice 7 Review(s)

Dear G.A.: A very good "first meeting" story. The dialogue was quite good, and both Aragorn and Gandalf sound in-character. I enjoyed reading this; thanks for writing and posting it. Sincerely, Darkover

This is a most amusing story. I love the humour of it. Gandalf sounds very Gandalvish, and I most certainly can see Aragorn rather preferring to spend a couple of days in jail than risking to wound or kill a couple of foolish, but innocent people.

I like your explanation for Thorongil too. Very ingenious.

Author Reply: Regarding Thorongil: Tolkien doesn't say whether Aragorn came up with the name himself, or other people named him so. Obviously this version is one that Aragorn kept to himself. But I like the idea of his choosing a name for himself based on his parents.

Thanks for reading!

Loved the characterization of Gandalf here; and the vision of poor Aragorn stuck in a jail cell in Bree being lectured by a hobbit is tragic and rather funny at the same time. A wonderful version of their first meeting!

Author Reply: Hi Raksha

I've had this tale in the hopper for years now--originally it was going to be the end of "The Sword of Elendil," but it no longer fit the story by the time I got there. Different mood!

Gandalf the Grey is a lot of fun to write when he's showing his sense of humor. I'm relatively less interested in Gandalf the White.

Thanks for reading!

This is good - I too commend you on the reasoning of the name. So obvious when someone points it out.

I am interested to know if Aragorn's naval apprenticeship was canon or GA lore?LBJ

Author Reply: It's GAlore. But kind of like the name, I think--obvious when you think about it. How else would he have learned the shipcraft he needed to sail against the corsairs in Gondor?

Nice beginning here. May get to The Sword of Elendil one day, when I get more of my own things finished! Heh!

Interesting tale, thought I hate to think of Aragorn with a criminal record in Bree.

This is the first time I've encountered that particular explanation for the name "Thorongil." Kudos!

"Thingol of Rohan" -- Thengel, perhaps?

Author Reply: Thanks for the catch. What an embarrassing error!

I don't think the Bree courts keep very good records on mysterious strangers.

Thanks for reviewing!
