Half-brother in Blood, Full Brother in Heart  by Alassante 2 Review(s)
SitaraReviewed Chapter: 1 on 4/5/2010
That High Prince Nolofinwë doesn't speak much in the published Silmarillion it's a well-known fact. But, in HoME 1 he actually does speak for himself and here is his statement:"As he (Fingolfin) said with some justice : 'My brother's claim rests only upon a decree of the Valar; but of what force is that for those who have rejected them and seek to escape from their prison-land? But I have not rejected the Valar, nor their authority in all matters where it is just for them to use it. But if the Eldar were given free choice to leave Middle-earth and go to Aman, and accepted it because of the loveliness and bliss of that land, their free choice to leave it and return to Middle-earth, when it has become dark and desecrated, cannot be taken away. Moreover I have an errand in Middle-earth, the avenging of the blood of my father upon Morgoth, whom the Valar let loose among us. Fëanor seeks first his stolen treasures." Moreover, HoME 1 tells us exactly when Nolofinwë became Fingolfin, if I'm not mistaken. I'm sorry I cannot point the pages and the paragraphs but the HoME volumes aren't available for me at the moment.

Yes, I actually am a fan of Fëanor. "lol" I certainly can understand and respect your vision regarding what happened in Aman shortly before the Darkening but in my opinion there had been more than one culprit, namely Fëanor, and none judged as harshly as he was and still is. This seems to me a bit unfair. And....if Fëanor was barking mad, what was the rest of the Noldor excuse? "grin"

I apologize for my rants and if I have offended you with my words. This was never my intent. Your work is worth of respect, even from the likes of me, and while I cannot agree with your vision, please allow me to praise your writing skills, which are remarkable, in my opinion.

Best wishes,
Sitara

Author Reply: No, of course you didn't offend me! And thank you for the praise of my writing skills.

I'm a HUGE Feanor and sons fan as well. I've written other pieces to show the non-crazy side of Feanor. hehe Or rather portraying him in more sympathetic light. The reason why I wrote this was because I had always wondered why Fingolfin had been loyal to Feanor even after he pulled a sword on him.

Your quote from HoME was interesting. I usually base all my fanfiction on Silmarillion only because too much of the HoME is conflicting. This piece is solely Silm based (I probably should label it as such) without any HoME references. Also your quote was after the destruction of the trees and mine is set earlier.

Thanks for your review. It was an interesting quote!

So sad a division between the brothers. Have seen such envy in my own family, and too well recognize how destructive it is!

Author Reply: Thanks for the review Larner! *hugs*

Aye. I can definately relate to destructive family envy! Not to the sword pulling degree but we also don't keep swords handy. :)
