“Aragorn son of Arathorn,” said Estel, locked in wonderment. Surely this was a dream. At any moment, he would wake up and be Estel, who lived in Rivendell as a foster son of Elrond. “And I am the last of your brother's line.” “There are Men who can claim kinship to him, and one now sits on the throne of Gondor,” said Elrond. “But you have the greater right, for your line is unbroken from the days of Arvedui. The line of Eärnur ended with his death.” Did Tolkien say definitely that Aragorn was the last descendant of Elros? I thought he was the last of Isildur's line, but not necessarily the last descendant of Elros (who are probably quite a good-sized number from various younger sons and female descendants at least). Also, the Steward of Gondor (I think it was Ecthelion at this time) does not sit on the throne, they sit on the Steward's Chair beneath it; it seems to have been a point of pride at least with Denethor. Quibbles aside, this is a nice version of the great scene that Tolkien never wrote. Excellent ending, too! Author Reply: You're right, of course, but I was working with the idea that they were talking about direct father-to-son descendants from the line of kings. Denethor, for example, was also a descendant of Elros, but a minor one. Technically, he was in line to the throne, but some of the other Numenoreans may well have had a stronger claim. You're also right about the throne. Technically, Denethor was the Steward and could only sit on the lower chair, but factually, he was in charge, whatever he was sitting on. His opposition to the return of the king meant that he was blocking Aragorn's ascension, and that was what I meant. I should have put author notes in to that effect - thanks for pointing this out.
