I'm really enjoying these stories of Frodo's youth. Nice job with characterizations. I don't like to think of him not being well-cared-for at Brandy Hall. It's nice that you've added a few unusual words in the end of this chapter; I'll have to look them up! Cheers!

Oh you ARE having fun with vocabulary! axenic agrestic ataraxy ? ALL in one paragraph! Are we going to get past the A's? Meanwhile, I will keep reading because you are several chapters ahead of me.

I find it very interesting that Gandalf feels the need to evaluate Bilbo's worth as a guardian for Frodo!

I think that you (through Gandalf) have made a very astute bit of analysis:

It was evident that Bilbo liked Frodo primarily because Frodo took a greater interest in Bilbo than had others in the Shire. That made sense. A parent-less child would be likely to respond to an adult who gave him attention. Likewise, someone with no attachments, like Bilbo, would respond to a young child’s rapt attention. If that was the only reason for Bilbo’s kindred interest in Frodo, it was probably harmless enough. Once again, Gandalf suspected that Frodo would actually be good for Bilbo. What troubled him, he realized, was that he was not at all certain that Bilbo would be equally good for Frodo.

Logical and sound reasoning!

Author Reply: Gandalf is a great voice to use.

The Master himself would enjoy your use of language, I suspect. And I, too, tend to see folks easily enchanted by Frodo Baggins!

Love the interval at the Market, and Ham's reaction to the fair Miss Poppy!

Author Reply: Thanks, Larner. What first attracted me to The Hobbit and LOTR was the Master's use of language. I'm ever so pleased you would think he'd enjoy mine!

He really meant that he needed the week to evaluate Bilbo.

That's an interesting twist on this experience. And Hal and Ham seem to be wonderful friends for Frodo; they have things to teach Frodo, and things to learn from him.

Now I'm racing off to the dictionary to look up some of the words in your closing paragraphs. My vocabulary will welcome the exercise!

Author Reply: I've gotten Wordsmith word-a-day emails for several years. Whenever one sounds "Middle-Earthy" I save it to a special file.

Here are the words I used in this chapter that I got from them:

axenic - free from contamination
agrestic - rural / rustic
ataraxy - a state of freedom from disturbance of mind
exigencies - states of affairs that make urgent demands
