A very interesting, sadly-sweet tale. I too enjoyed the visceral quality.

Very powerful stuff! I enjoyed the image of old age creeping into Merry's home through the window and I liked the fact that he wished not to have killed that first time yet seemed to know that he had little choice in it all. I enjoyed this very much.

This is a very insightful and thought-provoking look at how Merry felt about his deeds. I like the visceral matter-of-factness in his thoughts: memory and regret, mingled with the knowledge that it had to be done.

I don't think violence and killing ever came easy to a hobbit, and I am certain that over the years, both Merry and Pippin were haunted by the deeds they had done, even if they knew they were necessary, and even if they had a certain amount of pride in having protected their own. Bloodshed is just not hobbit-nature, and it would have definitely left scars.

Very Beautiful. This is well written.

Very powerful.

It is sad that all of them were forced to change their natures at all, but it was also important that they be able to do what was needed to defend and restore their homeland. If they hadn't learned warfare, they could never have understood the way the minds of the invaders of the Shire worked. They could never have defeated them.

I do agree that inocence lost is one of the hardest things to live with.
