Beautiful and heartbreaking. I read it while listening to 'Once upon a December' and found the combination perfect!

That was a lovely tale told by Elrohir, but I can only imagine what pain it must have cost him to have to relive those memories. Someday, Estel will be mature enough to understand. Meanwhile, I love the way you portray the nature of their love for each other here.

Author Reply: I'm so glad you enjoyed this! This was one of my earliest Tolkien fics, so it's kind of special to me. I'm glad you liked the way I portrayed those relationships.

A beautifully written story. I loved the dual perspective and your young Estel is a delight.

Author Reply: Thanks for the great review! I'm glad you liked little Estel; I was a little worried about how he would come off.

this is brilliantly written. so sad and painful. the imagery was brilliant, as was the charactisation. i think you answered the question "how do you tell a child?" perfectly. like most childrens stories, there is a far deeper, darker meaning, but for a child it is simply a good story until they are old enough to understand

have you written any more? *off to check*

To answer your question, I've written three more LotR stories, all posted here, on FFN, and on the Naice a Nilme archive. I have a couple more in the works, including a longer story that is currently awaiting beta approval.

Thanks for the review, and I hope you keep reading!

A simply lovely story, great characterization of a young Estel (I love the bit about Ada being afraid of vases breaking) and Elrohir (loved his line about Ada not being the one telling the story). It's a great mix of poignancy and humor, and the parallel telling of the fairy story and what really happened was both gripping and wrenching. I found myself wondering how in the world Elrohir managed to make it through the telling. Definitely deserving of a 1st place. Well done!

Author Reply: Thanks Cairistiona!
I'm glad you enjoyed the humor. It seemed like this piece needed some, so it's good to know it came through. Thanks for an awesome review!

Brennan, I voted for this in Teitho, and as I read it again it is still so exquisitely beautiful.

Elrohir's poetic soul and his pain is heartbreaking, his recognition of Elrond's agony is totally wrenching. And yet, to be able to tell this tale of his truth in a way that Estel can embrace pity and recognition of sacrifice for love, is truly awe-inspiring. And most touching is the faith that all will find healing when they sail.

Sigh...

Just beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with all of us.

Author Reply: Thanks for the wonderful review! I tried to communicate a lot of complex, conflicting emotions in this piece. I'm glad to hear it worked. Thanks for the review and the vote--I can't decide which is a better compliment. Both made my day.

I liked the back and forth between the story Elrohir tells and his memories - nicely done!

Author Reply: Thanks! I was worried that this would be too confusing, going back and forth between the spoken word and the unspoken memories. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!

A sad story to tell Estel, carefully couched not to sound too real, but allowing Elrohir to retell the story of his family's great grief in terms that allow him to accept it, even if young Estel does not realize just what he's hearing.

Gentle.

Author Reply: Thanks for the thoughtful review. It's great to know you appreciated this story.

I always enjoy stories with young Estel with his brothers, and this is wonderfully poignant. I loved Elrohir's story - but what bitter memories it brought him. He's right, it's too soon for Estel to know the truth.
