Letter from Formenos  by Istarnië 3 Review(s)

Oh...Fëanáro...so tragic...I feel so badly for him here. This character endured so much pain in his life. But Nerdanel choosing Indis like that must have cut him deeply. Yet again, I wish he could have somehow embraced Indis and loved her in his own way. Perhaps then things would have been different and he could have known what it is like to have a mother and siblings. This was well written and gave great insight to such a complex ellon!

Author Reply: Thank you very much for your comments, Red Squirrel. I do think Nerdanel had her reasons for going to dwell with Indis for a time, but that certainly would have hurt / angered her husband more than almost anything. I wish he had been able to come to terms with Indis as well, but I also see his situation, with a mother who 'died' and was then replaced, as rather unique.

Excellent characterisation of Feanor; showing his intelligence as well as his passion for his wife. What a shame that his pride over-ruled both; but that too, is part of Tolkien's story...

Author Reply: Thank you for reading, and for your comments Raksha. You have made the point I was trying to show. If Fëanor had, for even a short time, allowed his intelligence or love for another to overule his pride, (and actually sent the letter), The Silmarillion may have been a very different story. But then it would not have been Tolkien's story....so, alas, Fëanor must be intransigent.

This separation must been very hard for him; and to admit even in his own heart that he might have been cozened by Melkor must have been SO difficult! And his pride keeps him effectively mute! Poor Feanor!

Author Reply: Hello Larner! The words 'Poor' and 'Fëanor' do not often go together, I suspect. :) I was on another 'what if' with this tale - what if there was a moment when Fëanor realised he was, or could be wrong? He is intelligent, after all. But he is also proud and stubborn. And I have always thought from reading the little in HoME 10 and 12 about he and Nerdanel, that he did not want to be estranged from her.

Okay! Poor Fëanor in some respects!

Thank you for reading and reviewing. I have been away for quite some time, but am hoping to get back into more regular reading and reviewing myself.
