Great double drabble... I'd often wondered about that smell. I love how Sam brings Boromir into the scene...

Yikes!

Author Reply: You know that somehow or other, if I write about hobbits, Boromir manages to sneak in somewhere. Thanks for telling me you liked it!

Nice drabble. I'm not a big fan of fireworks outside the professional shows.

Author Reply: Thanks, Alassante!

That's a wonderful memory to have in such a desolate land. Thank you and Happy 4th!

What a marvelous use of the fact that fireworks contain sulfur, and that smell is the most evocative of the senses! I can certainly see how that unpleasant smell could bring up a far more pleasant memory!

Author Reply: Some people think that vinegar smells vile, but to me it's a comforting scent, because so much of my grandmother's comfort food had vinegar involved in the recipe (saurbraten, saurkraut, etc.).

I'm so very glad you liked this!

Ah, a wonderful memory bound now to a terrible truth. Alas for our two, and yet hooray for our two as well, for although they believe all is at an end, Sam has the memory of how this can be turned to delight to sustain him, and already Gandalf, Gwaihir, and two others are on their way to bring them back to the world in which this smell will again be tied to moments of delight.

Thank you, Rhyselle!

Author Reply: All things that happen to us resonate in our minds as we go through life, even if we are not consciously aware of it. Thanks for reviewing!
