Dead Steward's Gift  by Stefania 8 Review(s)

I hate to say this, but I am really enjoying the cat. Poor Faramir. Cats always win!

I loved the talk about mousers... where I grew up, we called them ratters... but the neighborhood wouldn't have survived without the few good ones!

I had to ROTF and laugh when Faramir realized that cats don't obey orders! And I loved the mouse running away!

It was bitter to read of Denethor not being faulted if he had forgotten to put the stone in its container.... hideous night that was!

I loved and hated Denethor's raving note... so incredibly sad for a great mind to have fallen so far... but an odd blessing for Faramir to see how far his father had fallen. Perhaps - somehow - it removed the dagger of hurt left from Denethor's failed attempt to take Faramir with him....

I found it creepy yet wondrous that, even in Denethor's madness, he hid the stone in hope that someone, anyone, would save Gondor... *sobs*

Author Reply: Hi Agape -

In the Steffverse, Denethor's pretty darn mad by the time he marches out with Faramir's prone body to Rath Dinnen. But not quite. He had sense enough to put the palantir someplace where it might be found by Aragorn or his heirs at some point in the future. He also had sense to do something else, which will be revealed in Chapter 5, now under construction.

Re: Cirrion and his antics. Well, Dead Steward's Gift is Cirri's story almost as much as it is Faramir's. He's quite a different animal from your stately Aqualonde, whose adventures I am following closely.

Aragorn at the door, possibly? Or who else might it be? The guardsman with the extra lantern? And why is Cirri dancing? We wonders, we does.

Author Reply: Hee hee.

Thanks for reading, Larner. Cirri is dancing becaue he senses the arrival of something that would make any self-respecting cat dance. I know my cat would have danced, under the same circumstances.

I just returned from Australia and lo! there's a new story from the Steff u
Universe! A delightful read as ever! And this time with a lot of suspense...

So sorry for your cat. I too love cats dearly.

Author Reply: Hi Irene -

Australia, wow! I would love to go there. Maybe someday. I hope you enjoy the rest of "Dead Steward's Gift." It's becoming a mystery ghost story with plenty of comedy so no one gets that scared.

You are evil! Now I am doomed to bite my nails until the next update about that cliffhanger.

Author Reply: Hi Soledad -

Congratulations on "The Young Knights'" MEFA award. It was a rousing story.

I've started to write the next chapter of "Dead Steward's Gift" by hand. I know what happens next, but telling you here would spoil it for everyone, right?

Thanks for reading this tale.

You have a real gift for creating a chilling atmosphere. As ever I love Cirri.A most enjoyable and gripping read.

Author Reply: Hi Linda and everyone -

I'm greeting you from the keyboard of my brand new laptop! It took awhile, but now I am a Windows user. Thank you for keeping on with the story. I think Cirri is helping me keeping the memory of my own ZouZou alive. So he is very special to me.

Just wanted you to know I am enjoying this story! Just the right amount of scaryness and mystery! I was scared at the end and wanted to get out of that room too! Help! LOL!

Author Reply: Oh good! I mean, I'm sorry. I didn't realize the story had become that scarey. But I guess it has. Remember that any story that has a black kitten getting himself into all sorts of mischief can't have that terrible an outcome.

This gets more and more mysterious. I like the cat, although he is not helping Faramir dispel the ghostly mood. Now I'm curious where the palantir is hidden.

Author Reply: Thanks for reading, obsidianj. Cirri is a wonderful cat, isn't he. I wish he could leap out of my computer and join me. I confess to playing him off against American's prejudices against black cats. So some readers might see Cirri as one of Queen Beruthiel's demon cats come to life. But me, who loves cats, especially black cats, well, I know that Cirri is just a playful youngster. I suspect he will help Faramir in the end. And yes, folks, I do know where the palantir is hidden.

The plot isn't just thickening, it's bubbling. What is ailing the cat; and where is the Anor-stone? Creepy message from Denethor, too.

Author Reply: Ah hah! Some of this will be revealed in Chapter 4. I guess I'm going to have to write that chapter soon. Always remember that Cirri is simply a cat behaving as cats do. And the thing that is provoking the cat into a frenzy is definitely bubbling.
