Poor Elrond! I wish they didn't have to be parted like that.

Very nice, and sad. You feel the sadness Elrond feels and can tell the similarities to Elros and Elrond and Elrohir and Elladan...

Nice job

ah, but this is very sad! i don't recall reading this one before, but if i have please excuse my lapse in memory!

i was worried at first that it was a younger set of twins, and then i realised that it was Elrond and Elros. :-( in truth, these two are among my favouritist of Tolkiens characters but (although, this could just be me not looking in the right places!) i can't find a great deal in cannon about them both together, their younger years as it were.

i have always thought that Elrond would be there at the end; in all honesty where else could he be? the last of his kin is passing from the world, and won't be seen again until Arda is remade, and painful as it must be i'm sure he'd be guilty for the rest of his life if he wasn't there.

do you have any fics of Elrond telling his sons about his brother, like he wished, and some of the mischief they got up to?

i find it amazing the way that you manage to capture such a huge array of emotions; this one is particuarly sad and poignant (and yet, there at the end it made me smile), and some of your other stories are full of humor and laughter, and you always do it so well. awesome

Author Reply: I was being mean - you were meant to think it was Elladan and Elrohir at first!

I don't think it's canon that Elrond was at Elros' side as he died - but as you say, Tolkien wrote so little about them. It allowed me to interpret what he didn't say!

I haven't written anything about Elrond telling his sons about their uncle yet - I'll have to add it to the (long) list of stories I still want to write.

Thank you so much for your kind words!!

Ahh! Elros and Elrond had had time to grow apart - but their bonds were deep. And I suppose it would be some consolation to see his brother reunited - in a way - with his mother and father.

And I'm glad you didn't kill off Elrohir. That would have been a very cruel thing to do!

Author Reply: It was bad enough knowing that Elrond and Elros chose different fates. It was sad to write this, even though it's canon (though I doubt Elrond was really there.) I couldn't do it to Elladan and Elrohir - I believe they both chose to be of elvenkind!! The misdirection was fun, though ;)

Actually, Hughes in my ISP--the ISP from Mordor. It likes to cut me off just when I have a review finished, leaving me unable to post it. Once they have DSL or cable out my way I'll be switching over away from the satellite provide as quickly as I can. How long that will be I have no idea, however, as they were supposed to have it run to my area three years ago. They lied, obviously.

Author Reply: I'm lucky - although I live in a small village, we got cable a couple of years ago. I signed up immediately, and I'd never go back to dial up!

You just had to go and make me cry had you?
I have always felt that Elrond had to be there when Elros passed away and now you wrote it for me, thanks.
I know you were trying to fool us readers, but I did not think you would ever write a story with Elladan and Elrohir choosing a different fate, so I knew it had to be Elrond and Elros.

Author Reply: I don't think it's canon, but I wanted Elrond to be with Elros when he died.

I wanted to make people think it was Elladan and Elrohir, but knew I wouldn't fool everyone!

I want the twins to chose the same fate, but did once write about them being parted:
A Final Farewell

You tricked me, Jay. First I thought of Elrond and Elros, but as one called the other 'El', I feared it were Elladan and Elrohir. So I was somehow glad my initial guess was right.

Anyway, it was very sad and left me crying, but it was beautiful, too. I don't know if Elrond truly was there, but I always thought he *should* have been. It is comforting to know they were together and able to say goodbye. And Elros' remark about Elrond having twins was something like foresight.

The white bird was their mother Elwing, wasn't it? I only wonder who the other one was. And I loved the image of Elros as the new star besides their father.

Author Reply: This parting could only be Elrond and Elros, but I wanted people to think it was Elladan and Elrohir at first ;/

The first bird was Elwing, then she escorted Elros into the heavens so he could be a new star next to Earendil.

BEAUTIFUL - absolutely heart-rendingly beautiful.

I loved this line... '...Tell them, El – tell them of us; of me.”

Author Reply: Thank you.

I wanted Elros to know of his twin nephews in some way, and this foresight was perfect.

Oh, that's lovely... sad, but lovely! The symbolism of the sea birds and the stars is so poignant! Just a lovely job!

*stands and applauds*

Author Reply: Thanks, Jasta - I'm glad you got the symbolism here. I didn't want to have to spell it out!

Jay!

I love this! My only compliant is that I had a plot bunny about this only just starting to hop and you've captured this moment in the lives of Elrond and Elros so well that I don't think I wuld be able to better it! Alas!

Having said that thought I did really love it. You captured the sorrow and doubt of Elrond so well and Elros' words of wisdom to his older brother were chosen! Elros becoming a star near his father was a lovely touch!

MM

Author Reply: If you've got a similar plot bunny, then please write it! I love to see how very different story plans can be, even when they start from the same idea.
