In the midst of summer  by Cuthalion 7 Review(s)

The grief has come, and now the joy to follow.

A lovely version of it.

Author Reply: Thank you very much! Funny enough I thought of my father (who lost his garden because the owner decided to build two houses on the ground, and because a severe heart disease kept him from gardening any longer), and my imagination created a kind of bridge to Sam's loss... of his wife, of the life he had built up in the Shire, and even of his beloved garden. And there it was. *smiles*

This story is beautiful. Oh gosh...i'm in tears because it's so darn poignant and really provides such great reasons for Sam to leave... i love your Rosie description here:
Rosie has always been the center of the smial, the warmth and the hearth fire, and on the evening of Midsummer the flame of her life has gone out like a candle stump.
Oh i so believe that and to not have Rosie anymore...so hard for Sam to deal.
I've always thought that with 13 children and numerous grandchildren that Sam *would* stay put in the Shire but i think, having been a Ring-bearer means that he needs to go heal too and also following in his master's footsteps is always one of the things he most wanted. It just really shows how much Frodo means to Sam.

And that last part with Sam's realization was so beautifully written as well...

His eyes fall shut, and again he takes a deep breath. The fresh breeze of a sudden hope drives away the warm, sweet fragrance of his garden, and suddenly his nostrils are filled with the sharp tang of the sea.

It is time.

awwwwww~!!! :*( Sooo beautifully written!

and love your description all throughout...
such a gentle, loving piece... thank you, Cuthalion!

Author Reply: And thank you, dear one, for your enthusiasm! And I think it was time indeed... time to leave and find something entirely unexpected. I'm glad that you like this so much!

O but this was a breathtaking piece. Your deft descriptions pull the reader into the scene, smelling, hearing, seeing, touching, feeling, as Sam's thoughts and memories touch a chord that chimes deep.

Very nicely done, and the ending, with its hope and peace, was beautifully wrought.

Author Reply: Thank you, dear. *hugs*

Ah, this brought tears to my eyes-- but you knew it would, didn't you, you rascal? Beautifully written and executed, such a perfect picture of Sam at this moment and period of his life. Lovely work. Thanks so much for posting.

Author Reply: And thank you for reviewing, my friend. This came to me as a suprise, and decided to follow the impulse. Would that original writing was as easy as this!

This was melancholy and sweet and hopeful, somehow, all at once.

Absolutely lovely.

Damn, where's a hankie when I need one?

Author Reply: Oy... *hands you a big, white one*. This is how I thought it must have been... to be bereft of the woman he has shared his life with and suddenly realizing that he is now able to find the one he has already lost sixty years ago. Melancholy and sweetness, and hope, all at one indeed. Thank you, dear one.

Oh this is wonderful Cuthalion. Your imagary is beautiful and I love the attention to the little details. And the way you change to a note of hope at the end through the use of smell is perfect for Sam.

Author Reply: Thank you - I thought this might be a good image to show that the time of "his"garden is over. I'm very glad that you like this!
