I like your portrayal of Denethor and his very early suspicions.I'd love to know what happened if Aragorn had to care for awounded Denethor. The arrival of the ARagorn's great rival to be has certainly cranked up an already tense .A nice moment for Widfara..

Author Reply: Hi Linda. I'm glad you like Denethor here. I don't think Denethor is actually suspicious of Aragorn, or considers him a rival, since Aragorn is in Rohan at this time and there's no indication that he would eventually go on to Gondor. I think many readers are projecting what they know will happen in the future rather than what is happening now. For now they are merely acquaintances and comrades-in-arms with the common goal of helping Thengel regain his throne. And Wídfara is always ready to defend his swordbrother against all comers. *grin*

A quick snippet- yes, I'm still reading (and loving) this story. And I am already enjoying your Denethor. Hopefully he and Thorongil remain on good conditions for a while... it's such a pity they became rivals. Those two together, what a tag team.

Author Reply: Hi Ainu Laire. I think Aragorn and Denethor would have made a great team if Denethor's jealousy hadn't gotten the better of him. At least here, at the beginning of their relationship, they can be friends and comrades. Thanks for letting me know you're still reading and enjoying this story. I really appreciate it.

And certainly he has good reason to ponder, for he is a man learned in lore; and this is his equal in so many ways. They might have been brothers, but intead became rivals on Denethor's side, at least.

Author Reply: Very true, Larner, on all counts. A pity, too, because I think Aragorn would have welcomed Denethor as a brother rather than as a rival. But for the moment, at least, they are comrades-in-arms, if not friends, fighting a common foe for the sake of oaths to Thengel and the people of Rohan.

Excellent chapter... I very, very much liked your portrayal of Denethor and I loved Aragorn's 'guarded' approval.

Hooray! Hooray!

Author Reply: Glad you approve, Agape. We'll see more of Aragorn and Denethor interacting in the next chapter.

Hm, so Denethor is pondering is he, let's hope he takes his time about adding two and two together?!
More please,
Lynda

Author Reply: Well, there will be nearly sixty years before the Ring War. I'm sure Denethor will take all the time he nedds to figure things out. *grin*

Bwaha, exciting plans in the brewing! (Although you had me worried with the chapter title for a second--I was like, oh no, author's notes and not a new chapter? LOL Glad I was wrong.)

I felt for Thengel with your mention that he once more had to go view the dead and see to their burial. It must be one of the hardest parts of being king, and really drive home the responsibility he has as a leader.

Aragorn's not the only one with a touch of precognition, huh, if Denethor's already being reminded of stories of the long-lost king (either that, or Thorongil's pulling some pretty powerful mojo among the wounded, I suppose)?

Can't wait to see what happens next!

Author Reply: Oh no, this story is far from over although it is nearing the end as you probably can guess. Once Thengel secures his throne then it's all over save for the shouting, as the saying goes.

Thengel is a great leader and understands the responsibilities that go with the crown. When I first started writing this story I didn't know how powerful a personality Thengel really is. In some ways this is more his story than Aragorn's.

The next chapter will be posted sooner than this one was, I promise.

Thanks for your review, George. I greatly appreciate it.
