Yule  by Rhyselle 12 Review(s)

All three ficlets were absolutely wonderful. What a beautiful tradition to pass on. It was a tribute to Boromir also.

I have Agape to thank for telling me about them. Thank you so much for writing them.

A precious way for traditions to spread - and a glorious way to remember their friend and defender. I love that Merry and Pippin were still setting the light boats sailing downriver even in old age. Loyal, they both are - their love, once won, doesn't fade.

I like the idea that Merry and Pippin both so enjoyed this tradition that they eventually continued it in their own homelands. Just lovely!

What a sweet tale of love and tradition!

Author Reply: Thank you very much for reviewing!

I'm so glad that you liked it.

Excellent!, Good tight writing, following up the previous equally good tale. Binds the various cultures in a way that is very believable and distictly non-twee.
(err, if you are not English/Australian that is a compliment ;-)

Author Reply: Thank you very much!

I lived in England with the US Navy for four years in my younger days and so I do realize that it was a compliment! LOL!

I'm so glad you liked it and it's predecessors.

Lovely Rhyselle. It made me want to cry!

Author Reply: I do hope they were happy tears!

Thank you very much!

Beautiful! It has been quite some time since I made a paper boat. This is a great tradition.

Author Reply: Thank you!

I wonder now if next year turning there won't be a whole lot of storiesofarda.com authors and readers setting their wishes afloat. :)

I am not a reader of most Hobbit stuff - forgive me - it's just not my cup of tea - but I noted in the summary something about Gondor and decided to press my luck.

I am now sitting here with tear-filled eyes. This was truly beautiful. Thank you for sharing it. I shall find a boat somehow next Yule and a river that is not frozen, at least one in my mind, and send a boat with my wishes.

Again, many thanks for a beautiful, touching piece.

Author Reply: Thank you (for the third time!) *g*

It was suggested to me that I bring out the younglings' wading pool and let them set their lit boats afloat in that since the river was to dangerous to go near...

I still choke up when I think about how a simple heartfelt tradition that Boromir was doing to make him feel less far from home eventually becomes something that generations of Hobbits (at least the Tooks and Brandybucks!) carry on through the years... We all want to feel that we make a difference in someone's life. Being the source of a new hobbit tradition is another way that Boromir made a difference in the lives of Merry and Pippin.

Hi Rhyselle, welcome to SoA. I'm glad to see your stories here. I've read all three stories but have decided to leave this one review, as I see them as interconnected pieces. Your writing is very beautiful and poignant. You capture Boromir and Faramir and the hobbits very clearly and I liked how you give us a glimpse of Denethor in a good mood for a change *grin*. I look forward to seeing more of your work here soon.

Author Reply: I'm so glad that you liked them! They are interconnected, although they were originally written separately over the course of three weeks in December '06, with "A Wish" inspired by a comment I received on "Mettare" on FFN, and then "Yule" came to my head as I mentioned in the closing author's note.

I am working on a multi-chapter Faramir AU fic that I am holding off submitting until I have it completed (three or four chapters to go, depending on my muse), and I got bit by a plot-Nazgul yesterday for a story of the Elendili departing Numenor for which I need to do some re-reading of the Silmarillion and some of the other Legendarium before I get started on it. But they'll be up eventually.

Thank you so much for reading and reviewing my work. I do really appreciate it.

Well, welcome here to SOA. I reviewed this there on FFN, and am glad to see it shared here as well. A lovely idea, and very similar to the idea of memorial boats sent out on the Hobbit day of memories as Lindelea has pictured it, and the wish boats sent out on the eve of marriages as described in Lindethuvial's story of Eomer courting Eowyn.
