In the Mines  by Edoraslass 7 Review(s)

I love the courage and indomitability (is that a word?) of dwarves. And their ruthlessly hidden romantic streak and love of family. There should be more stories about them.

Author Reply: I think it's a word, and a good description of Dwarves to boot. And yes, they seem very determined to keep the softer side of themselves hidden, don't they?
Thanks!

These were all very good, Edoraslass. You captured the personality and trademark characteristics of the Dwarves so well. At least it is here, in the earth, surrounded by stone and rock. It is a fit place for a dwarf to meet his fate. ....If we do not show them that there are dwarves willing to die for what is theirs, this filth, these orcs and trolls and creatures unspeakable will ooze out from under the mountain and despoil that which is most precious to us. ..... I am not reluctant to die fighting these foul creatures, but it darkens my heart to know that I will never again see my son hold a chisel, never again watch my wife at the forge.

I most especially liked the one regarding Gimli's pov. It was very disconcerting and chilling to read of his sudden want for the One Ring, but I agree that the lust for revenge over Moria could definitely have been Gimli's downfall. How very like the Ring to pray upon that rage in order to create more hate, destruction, and war. I'm very glad Gimli did not let the Ring overcome him as Boromir did.

Well done!

Author Reply: Dwarves are strangely easy if I can get them to talk at all - but they're usually pretty secretive, which I guess makes sense. :)

The Ring knows what it's doing, and when exactly to make its move, doesn't it? Creepy little thing. I think a Dwarf with the Ring would be very interesting, but someone Dwarfier than me would have to do that.

Thanks!

Oh how powerful and sad!

And, yes, I can see that if there would be *one* moment along the Quest when he might be vulnerable to the temptation of the Ring, this would be it--when vengeance was uppermost on his mind!

Author Reply: Yep, that was my thought exactly, that Moria would be Gimli's most vunerable moment.
Thanks!

Very Dwarvish Edoraslass. I like the way you have Gimli wanting the Ring purely to aid his lust for revenge. Of course, like Gandalf's pity it would only have started there. Now I am going to have fun driving 100 miles down the motorway thinking up names for these anonymous dwarves! *g*

Author Reply: Ha, you caught me! Mostly those dwarves don't have names cause I've never made up a dwarf name in my life!

Thank you!

Oh, to see Gimli there with the Ring working at him, and hear Its blandishments in his thoughts--that is chilling!

Well, well done indeed.

Author Reply: I think the Ring would have spoken to everyone at some point, testing to see who was most vunerable. And Moria would be the perfect place to test Gimli.

Thanks!

Oh, the poor dwarves of Moria. You captured the grim courage and even some warmer feelings very well. It must have broken Gimli's heart to see the wanton desecration...

Author Reply: I've always loved Gimli's reactions in Moria - you can just feel how outraged he is.
Thanks!

I like this. Stories featuring dwarves are rare, and this one picks up nicely on their love of rock and family, their respect for craft, their fierce courage.

Author Reply: Dwarves don't talk to me very often, but I'm always so pleased when they do. Thank you!
