Under the Ring  by Holdur 6 Review(s)

"As he turned away to seek out Pippin, Merry knew that Frodo was the most compassionate hobbit Merry had ever known. And the most cruel."

Absolutely wonderful! The Ring would affect the others. This is a good look at just how it would do that.

Oh. My. Gawd.

I could NOT figure out how you pulled this.. this.. beast out of Frodo! This is the first story of yours I believe I've read and I was very confused and rather disturbed by this portrayal... and then you subtly point out:
As Merry stared into Frodo’s normally bright blue eyes, he thought he saw a flash of gold within them followed by a nearly imperceptible hiss of laughter on the wind, but it was gone in an instant and Merry dismissed immediately as silliness brought on from his astonishment.
... and of course in that instant I knew that you were not misled but brilliant!!

I stand (ok I sit at my desk!) in awe of how you led me one way and then *WHAM!* nail me with reality as it is for Frodo.

Beautifully written Holdur. I am impressed. :)

Yes, one hears the echo of the Ring there, and Its laughter. Alas, that Frodo must carry such a thing. But both Merry and Pippin were being irresponsible, apparently.

I'm at work right now and should be completing some memo or the other but I decided to take a "break" and reads your fic. I am very glad I did. It was very enjoyable though Frodo was creepy. I sometimes forget, probably due to the impact of the movies, that Frodo was older than Merry and Pipin, very much the older wiser cousin. This was a good reminder of the hard justice of adults.

Am off to see what else you've got up here. So much for work :-D

Whoa! Am I ever glad I read this!

I don't read Hobbits - though I love M&P - but there was Boromir's name and I had to read... Again, very glad I did.

I was horrified at Merry's speech and more horrified over Frodo's actions - but I loved how you brought it all together with that little band of gold like a watermark throughout the tale.

Nice job!!!
