Hello! This story made me smile, especially when I realized who the young Took in question was. I wonder if in later years the connection was ever made?
Lovely imagery and dialogue. Keep up the good work!

I just discovered this lovely little story, referred to me by a friend. What a charming picture of lonely Strider having to fight his heart lest he become too fond of a puppy he could never hope to keep. It makes me wonder if maybe as a child he might have had a much-loved dog. That last line was perfect--not overly sentimental but perfectly shows just how lonely Strider's life was at that time, how much he had to sacrifice to do his duty, and how much he really did get attached to the little fellow. Really a nice story--I'm glad I found it!

OOOOOHHHHHhhhhhhhoooOOO! Hooooow cuuuuuuuute! Of course Strider has a soft side, and I love it! The pangs of regret speak such volumes, and your closing:
But he’d grown used to the pup’s snoring and the solid ball of warmth tucked against his chest, and it took him a bit longer than usual to get to sleep that night. ... How precious! Poor Strider! The things he's given up to protect Middle earth!

I say we need another story: this one about a Kings birthday, and a gift given to him by his young knight Pippin... from a litter of pups born not too long ago... them being of a Grand Line of dogs begat from Pippin's favorite Constant Companion...

::grins wickedly:: I'm VERY GOOD at providing plot bunnies: just ask Cuthalion and Pearl Took! LOL Lookit! I even gave you a TITLE for pity's sake! :::bats her eyes at you:: pretty pretty please!?!? :)

OK, I'm sorry. I shouldn't scare you like this, this being my first review of your stories and all. I tend to get a little excited. LOL (a little?!?!) :D

Author Reply: Here I am, late in replying as per usual.

I do think it's such a shame, that Strider couldn't even have a dog to keep him company while wandering around - there's one creature who'd never sneer at him just because he was dirty and raggedy looking!

I have occasionally toyed with the idea of a Pippin-puppy story, but it's really kind of hard for me to write dogs, since I'm so very much a cat person. Maybe it'll pop up one day.

Thank you!

This was just delightful.I loved to see this caring and warm side of Aragorn.

Author Reply: Strider's about the easiest version of Aragorn for me to write; he seems much more comfortable as a Ranger.
Thank you!

Sweet. Must have been hard for a lonely man to give up the puppy - but it was best for the dog, and Strider is very good at putting others first.

Author Reply: Yep, I think all that time alone will feel just a bit more lonely now, at least for a while.

Thanks!

So, Pippin has kindred in Bree, does he? Interesting, I must say; and to have the tie to Aragorn is wonderful. And am very glad Strider has more hope for the pup than to let Ferny have it.

Nice to see so many of our friends and acquaintances included here.

Author Reply: I just imagined that Pip had family everywhere, no manner how distantly related they might be. And I keep thinking about doing something where adult Pippin realizes where his beloved dog came from!

Thank you, and sorry I took so so long to answer!

To bad he could not keep the puppy, but at least it went to a good home, and not to Bill Ferny.

Author Reply: I think Strider would have taken the puppy with him before he'd give it to Bill Ferny.

Thank you!

How sweet and adorable. Yes, Aragorn would take good care of a little orphan like the pup. I find it very ironic that he ended up destined for Pippin, LOL! I wonder if in later years, Pippin and Strider compare notes, and realize where the pup ended up--that would be fun to see!

I've definitely considered it, because you're right, that would be great fun to see!

Thanks!

I've got a bg grin after reading this! Very sweet, but not mawkish - well done!

I was a bit worried when Bill Ferny offered to take the dog - not that Strider would ever let him - but I loved Nob's swift reaction!

Pippin will be thrilled with his birthday present, but poor Strider is going to be rather lonely now.

I've always had a sneaking fondness for Nob - I really should try to write him more.

Thanks!

Awwww. Lovely Pup and kind-hearted Strider and deep=sighted hobbit. What could be better.

Author Reply: And a new owner with just as much energy as the puppy.

Thank you!
