Divers Drabbles II  by Raksha The Demon 8 Review(s)
Little DwarfReviewed Chapter: 13 on 6/26/2008
I can't believe I'm really saying this, but this was... cute!!! :)

You fooled me again, I was certain it was a child or a young hobbit, not a dragon cub! ;)) What a great turn! It reminds me of another fantasy series of novels ("Inheritance" by Christopher Paolini), where dragons are not evil, but intelligent and strong creatures... Of course Paolini's fantasy can in no way be compared to Tolkien's great work, but your dragons in this fics reminded me of his... :)

"We stain ourselves only with the blood of foes and prey, not common dirt. A good dragon is fearsome, but never dirty!" Hahahahaha! Excellent line! :)

Oh, what a great ficlet and such an original way to meet the challenge. I really enjoyed it... my first thought was that it was Smeagol. :) Thanks for sharing it.

Author Reply:
I pity Smeagol, but don't especially want to write about him. Writing Smaug was fun - he was so vain and full of himself in The Hobbit, he must have had a mother who impressed on him the importance of looking good. I'm glad you liked the double-drabble.

Hey, thanx for giving me the 100th review for this compilation!

I never read a Smaug drabble, but I liked this one!

Author Reply: Either have I, so I was very pleased to have a Smaug muse come and nip me.

I'm glad you enjoyed the piece!

*grin*

Author Reply: Thanx, harrowcat; glad to see cute widdle Smaug was to your liking.

Dragon-rearing is such hard work! I'm not surprised that Smaug's mother has to be firm with him - the last thing you want is a spoiled child!

Author Reply: Especially one that's going to grow up to be the size of a house and have a flame-thrower in his respitory system! Still, I'm sure Readfah was up to dealing with Smaug's growing pains.

Thanx for reading and reviewing!

This is both cute and funny. You succeed in making these dragons lovable.

Author Reply: Glad you liked it, Linda. Even a dragon can love her future little man-killer, and want to teach him proper habits.

Aww...a cute little Smaug as a dragonette! Who'da thunk it? *grin* Really, this is wonderful--even fierce and cunning dragons had to be little hatchlings at one time! That's one take on the prompt I would *never* have thought of!

Author Reply: Thanx for reading and reviewing, Dreamflower! Yes, even great evil firedrakes might have been somebody's widdle hatchling once. I couldn't resist trying out the concept.

To realize this was Smaug who came in dirty from playing was a surprise, but a delightful one. And even dragons had loving mothers, apparently. (Smiling.)

Author Reply: I think I saw, in a PBS documentary, mother alligators carefully carrying their hatchlings from the mud in which the eggs were laid to a new nest.

Smaug had a lot of self-esteem, and Morgoth was no longer around to supervise the breeding of dragons; so I thought he must have had a loving mother. Just think of the Tyrannosauros Rex in Jurassic Park II, only more intelligent and able to speak.
