The Charge  by LaughingBrook 5 Review(s)

I always find it interesting how many orphans there are in Middle-earth. This is one of the saddest losses - poor Frodo. 12 in hobbit years was probably closer to 8 as we would understand it.

PS Although I see that another reviewer points out that the Master at the time was Gorbadoc, this is a mistake on Gaffer Gamgee's part when relating the story to the patrons of the inn. According to the family trees at the back of the book, Gorbadoc dies in 1363, before Frodo's birth. Rorimac, Saradoc's father, is Master at the time of the tragedy, and for a long time after.
Very confusing, I know.

Author Reply: There are quite a few orphans, aren't there?
And yes, all the different little details can be very confusing.
I think I got it right now, though. :o)
Thanks for reviewing!

A great beginning. I was much older than Frodo was when my grandfather died, but I went to sleep that night and woke in the morning to be told he had fallen asleep and passed that quietly. I can only imagine the horrible pain it would be for a child to lose both his parents so young and so tragically. (I am like you - I love the power angst brings to a story, but there will be a lot of love too, I'm sure.)

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: Thanks for such a great review!
And I think that part of the power of angst is in the reactions of those who love the person who is hurting.

Namarie & God bless,

Such a sad beginning, but it had to be.

Author Reply: Yeah, I know. But I actually love reading angst, it makes a stoy much richer to my taste.

minor point: The Master of the Hall at this time wasn't Saradoc, it was his father Gorbadoc.

other than that small technicallity, wonderful story.

Author Reply: Thank you for not letting my mistake ruin the story. :o)
I changed the first chapter accordingly.
And thanks for reading!

The hardest thing to have to waken a child to--to learn he's lost his parents so tragically.

Author Reply: I can't really imagine the reality of it. How do you tell an innocent, lively child something that will break their heart?

Thank you for your review!
